Political comment is a high risk activity on the site these days so I thought I'd try again to give those who are interested in politics a safe haven!

Its Times New Roman 4 points, could copying, and pasting as plain text have caused the fault?

I'm not sure but unlike other posts I cannot alter the size of your fonts, maybe it does need someone like pluggy to have a look at it. Nolic

This editor spoofs the font sizes and 4 is equal to 14point if you look in the drop down this is formatted in 4 within this editor.

It isnt me who is copying anything, on the rare occasions that I do, I just highlight the sentence in the topic, copy it and simply paste it, that way it appears as the same size and font that I always use, it does not appear as the original, I have never yet copied from Word. When I put anything in this quick reply box, I select my font from the top bar 2nd from right, then go to size and select 4.

Just one question before we forget this storm in the virtual teacup. "Do any of you have a problem with the way in which my posts appear"?

Time New Roman size 4 (14point) always looks darker than the default font in this editor. Even though it is not emboldend.
We were posting at the same time Peter and no I do not have a problem although I have always preferred non serif fonts, merely an observation of how this editor behaves.
I often construct longer posts in Windows Notepad and then cut and paste them in. This is purely because Bandit Bills browser once dumped a lot of work on me in the walking thread whilst editing directly in the browser. It's a while ago and I now use Firefox patched for cut and paste.

Thanks Ian. As a professional signwriter, I like serifs, coupled with good shading they add real depth to the lettering.

I don't have a problem with the presentation of your font Thomo, it does always appear in bold but as Bradders said I am used to that. Like you when I want to illustrate using someone elses post or part of it, i just copy and paste, it has worked with all other fonts except yours, which seems to appear even bigger when I paste it, and the effect won't go off so everything I write after that stays in that large bold text, untill i leave the site.

Bottom line I think is that size of text equates to volume of speech in responses. That's why most netiquette advisers recommend small but readable fonts. As for the way the platform interprets copied text, it seems to have whims. Sometimes it refuses to accept BET copy from the hard drive no matter what I do. Exiting the programme and re-starting seems to cure that one. If we accept that due to individual set-ups it sometimes varies I don't see any problem. I very rarely alter the font size and the result seems to be OK in default.
I see that the Observer claims a letter to Cameron in January from the relevant department warned of people being made homeless by housing benefit cuts. Didn't alter the scale. Not a high priority?

I was listening to Farming This Week on R4 this morning. They were in the Vale of Evesham looking at vegetable picking for the market and a high proportion of the workers come from Latvia. They earn on average £60 a day. The farmer said that they advertise for English workers but there are no takers. My mind went back to what Ian Duncan Smith said a few days ago when he appealed to employers to hire English workers instead of immigrants. At the same time, being a Tory he is a supporter of the market system and more freedom for employers. Bit of a contradiction here. Why does he think these farmers are employing seasonal workers from Latvia? Why are there so few English takers?

I too listened to this Stanley.
The farmer gave the answer. The work is seasonal (March to October weather dependant), and is best suited to a transitory arrangement rather than full time employment. The employment system has always allowed this in agricultural workers
That does not, however, stop the locals applying and the farmer said he would take them on.
Remember that the itinerants "live in" whilst the locals would have to travel out at times when there would not be a bus service if at all, because the report did not explain where the nearest conurbation was. Of course that could be overcome with a mini bus arrangement dependant upon distance
Another part of the benefit system introduced by Blair and Brown was that certain features of the system were closed off if you did not have 6 months + on benefit (social fund etc). I think you should be asking why that "reform" penalised and kept them dependant upon the state whilst not encouraging more flexibility. Plus why cynically the Job programme was introduced by Yvette Cooper to encourage people to have to re-apply for benefit after six months?

Why are there such few English takers? why should they when they can sit at home doing nothing, and getting paid for it! There was a time when if you were out of work, and able bodied, you went were you were told to.

I agree with the sentiments, but the report didn't actually mention where the farm operation was in relation to any "pool" of unemployed people.
