Questions about this subject keep cropping up amid closely related topics, so I thought it may be a good idea to expand on the subject. I will not go on about my qualifications to discuss Canal Boats so lets just give it a go and see what transpires.

I agree about safari Cally. And I do agree about not having used it much.
I can now appreciate how frustrating it can be for Mac users. It's doing my head in that I cant yet play with family tree on there

There's some good family tree software available for the Mac, but if you'd got the MacBookPro (which by the sounds of it you haven't?) you could have run any PC program on it, including your existing family tree stuff.

I've never looked into this because I don't want to run any PC programs, so I can't give you anything but vague details here, sorry.

However, sounds like it's too late - you should've asked me!

I'm no expert but I've picked up a bit of Mac knowledge through the years - maybe I could have suggested a better/easier solution?Go to Top of Page

You can make any newer Intel based Mac run Windows using either Bootcamp (Dual boots either OS X or Windows) or some virtualisation software such as Parallels.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boot_Camp

http://www.parallels.com/

You'll need a copy of Windows in either case.

Re the Safari issue, its pure sloppyness on the part of the part of the website script writers, they just haven't bothered testing it. As the market share of Windows and Internet Explorer dwindles its becoming more important that they do make their stuff work with other browsers. I don't suppose you can expect web software running on an obscure operating system like Windows (for the internet that is) to see past Internet Explorer.....

To be fair tho, it seems to work with Firefox.

I've been using a Mac, but its getting old, my Next mchine is likely to be a PC running Ubuntu Linux, purely because Macs are so damned expensive.  I maintain Windows for a living I don't want to have to lower myself to using it at home.....

Aha! What you need is a 14 month old 2 x 2.66 GHz dual core Intel Xeon with 160mb hard drive, 1Gb 667MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM etc etc. One careful lady owner. I happen to know where there's one going for a very reasonable price... Go to Top of Page

Er! getting back to boats, I got quite a surprise yesterday. A quick sortie down to Greenberfield for a word with the lockeeper about closures betwixt Silsden and Barlick in the near future (with which he couldnt help) revealed that the boat built by us at LPM 15 years ago which has stood festering at Greenberfield all that time, has now apparently got a new owner at last. "Lawrence" formerly "Marsden Mist" now looks like it is care for at last. Good luck to the new owners, whoever they are. Also, another quick snoop elsewhere revealed that since the BET anounced "Marina planned for Barlick, in about 1974, work of some kind has finally begun, but now I know why most of the regular visitors there drive "Chelsea Tractors" it does look rather like a cross between a rural scrapyard, and a home for knackered narrowboats. Next job, pressure wash car!.

We really haven't played with it enough yet Cally to form a constructive opinion. We did only get it on Saturday.  I like the PAF free download for my family tree from the LDS website although I have got a couple of bought programs too. I haven't given those a try yet.
We haven't given up on it, still getting to grips...its the shortcuts that I am used to that bug me...they don't work with Mac and you have to constantly think about what you are doing instead of being on autopilot.
This is what we have

By 'eck, we're all o'er t'shop with this thread, aren't we?

Pluggy - we are indeed talking Mac, I don't do PCs.

Please don't feel under any pressure whatsoever but if I don't sell this Mac I won't be able to move onto the boat and you will personally have ruined my dream. Could you sleep at night, knowing that? Thought not. lolol

Only joking of course. My supplier has offered me £880 for it in part-ex. I could probably get more on eBay but I just don't have the time.

Mel - I'm sure you'll come to love your little Mac in time. Lots of keyboard shortcuts for everything, just different from a PC.

Thomo - great news about Marsden Mist. Go to Top of Page

Peter, I'm so pleased to hear that Marsden Mist is going to get some TLC.  Such a shame to see a quality hull being allowed to moulder.  If it was me I'd get it out of the water and sandblast the lot followed immediately by a coat of proper red primer and then a coat of Micaceous Iron Oxide paint if you can still get it.  You'd have a good sound base then for anything you wanted to do afterwards.  MIO is a much under-rated paint, it's the grey stuff they used on pylons and railway bridges.  It is the most impervious paint I know.

Nope, Mac pro at £880 is outside my league, I was grimmacing at a bottom end iMac with educational discount at £750.  New Hand built PC box at about £150, freebie Linux OS and using the old monitor will do.

G4 Mac Mini anyone ?

OK, I'll let you get back to boats now.......

I would love to be able to let you have a muck around with it, but I need to sell it first so I can afford the MacBookPro.

This isn't off topic, because I need to swap it for a laptop which will run off a battery  when we're afloat - until we get a mooring with electrics. They also use up a bit less juice when plugged in - every amp and watt will have to be monitored carefully.

Also, if I can't get a signal on the boat due to trees or bridges it will be easier to connect to tinterweb by toddling along the towpath to find one.Go to Top of Page

I replied to the wrong quote. I really must look at what I'm doing. Anyway I'd end up cussing at a Mac, I swear enough at a PC ..............
