Hello

After the kindness of Stanley posting for me I have now been able to register myself and here is my introduction.  My name is Eileen and I have been researching my partner Dave's family history since 2005 when we inherited a large box of photo's and stuff when his mother Ruth nee Higgin died.

There is only the Higgin branch of his history that came from this neck of the woods and it is proving one of the most difficult.

I like another member  listed my hobby as Greek and  I have two diploma's which are of no use to me now as we have bought a mobile home in Brittany and spend as much time as we can there and my French is terrible.

I don't know much about the area but have enjoyed reading postings on this site.

In my research so far I found that Richar Higgin of HollingI Top was baptised at New church in Pendle 1780 son of John Higgin a yeoman and Jane.  Richard married Jenny Bracewell daughter of Joseph and Susan Bracewell nee Hartley.  Both Joseph (Earby) and Susan (Kelbrook) were buried at St Bartholomew's at Colne as were Richard and Jenny (Jane) Higgin who both died in Manchester.

I have also been given 3 plot numbers at the church yard of 21 and 97 in the name of Bracewell and 102 in the name of Higgin but no one seems to be able to help me with how I can find who are in these graves or whether they have gravestones. I hoped this might give me a lead to the next generation. I have also found a contract of rental at Whitehouses for Joseph Bracewell saying he was a yeoman.  Baptisms of his children show he was a farmer from Whitehouses.

I have searched everywhere for Joseph Bracewell born circa 1746 if his death age 79 in 1825 is correct  John Higgin was also born 1746 as he married aged 21 1767 to Jennett Crowshey (variety of spellings)

I am writing this family history into book form but cannot get any further on this branch until I find baptisms.

This is the end of my introduction and my explanation of joining ogb.

I will see if I can discover anything in Colne Library about the graves at St Barts Eileen. If there was a headstone then the inscription may be recorded. I am there every Wednesday morning, and will happily look things up.

Hello Eileen, I have taken some photo of gravestones in St Bart's churchyard, Colne, of my own ancestors. I think I recall seeing the name Bracewell/Higgin. Will look next time I'm up that way.

Have you ever found a lady called Anne Battersby? A considerable source on local Bracewells. There is a pice on her somwhere from Julie Cheche, another good source on the wider Bracewells. Try Googling them......

I have tried to email Julie Cheche as she had Joseph Bracewells son John's family as going to USA with their mother when John died.

John Bracewell a grocer, son of Joseph married Susannah Smith at St Bart's and they run the grocery business together in Salford.  They didn't have any children and at their demise left the business to his brother Hartley's son Joseph who married his first cousin Susie and was  daughter of the youngest of the children of Joseph and Susy Bracewell nee Hartley, William.  I am in touch with a a ggg granddaughter of William. William married at Thornton in Craven to an Ann Windle of Barnoldswick.

There was another John Bracewell married at St Bart's to Mary Starkie but he wasn't Joseph's son.

I will give Anne Battersby a go though but Julie is on the wrong branch and tried to advise her of this but they kept coming back.

 Thanks again Stanley

Eileen

From "Colne Parish Church Monumental Inscriptions" listed about 1920. (There are no plot numbers that relate to the ones you have been given.)
On the North Side of the Old Grammar School. Row 3 No 1.

In Memory of Richard Higgin of Manchester who died November !st 1842 aged 62 years.
Also of Jane his widow who died September 30th 1846 aged 63 years. Also Ann daughter of  Richard & Jane Higgin who died  May 17th 1831 aged 14 years.
Also of William their son who died April 17th  1833 aged 27 years.

I will get back to you with the Bracewell inscriptions....though Joseph isnt amongst them.
