HOW TO USE THIS INFORMATION

There is a massive amount of material on this disc. The LTP transcripts alone contain 1,300,000 words and there are approximately 500 pictures. In addition there are the memoirs, articles and supporting documents. There is no easy way to access an archive of this size without investing time and effort. Sorry about that!

However, one good way of getting a feel for the material and an idea of the structure would be to spend half an hour reading the supporting documents. Then access the 78AI series of transcripts which are my overview of the project. This is, in itself a large body of work but it will give valuable clues to what is contained in the rest of the archive.

The Barlick View archive is all the articles written by me for our local paper. They cover a tremendous range of subjects and are often nothing to do with textile history. However, they are all pertinent to Barnoldswick, or Barlick as we locals call it. As such they will often help to paint a backdrop or give some light relief. When your brain starts to ache, have a break and read an article.

It might appear to be slightly egocentric to include my father’s memoir and my own. I haven’t taken this view, I believe that these serve the same purpose as the social history content based on Dr Elizabeth Roberts’ questions that appear in most of the informant’s transcripts. They illustrate a range of experience from Australia in 1896 to the UK in 2004. If you want a first hand account of Gallipoli, go to LGStory, just one example of what is in there.

Feel free to copy this CD and distribute it to other scholars, institutions or libraries. Prime source evidence cannot be the property of any one person or organisation. It belongs to the world. Help me to get it out there.
