Came accross this poem today which I found somewhat amusing..thought I'd share it with all of you !

"Weather"

Once I dipt into the future far as human eye could see,
And I saw the Chief Forecaster, dead as any one can be--
Dead and damned and shut in Hades as a liar from his birth,
With a record of unreason seldome paralleled on earth.
While I looked he reared him solemnly, that incandescent youth,
From the coals that he'd preferred to the advantages of truth.
He cast his eyes about him and above him; then he wrote
On a slab of thin asbestos what I venture here to quote--
For I read it in the rose-light of the everlasting glow:
"Cloudy; variable winds, with local showers; cooler; snow."

Ambrose Bierce

Weather

Raindrops race towards an earthly trip
forming puddles for feet to slip
Snow's slow flutter abstains from sound
Yet, hail’s fury on eardrums pound
A light mist enlivens an onerous face
Where as a dreary fog veils an unseen place
A gentle breeze speaks softly a dulcet sound
But, tornadoes twist allusions of firm ground
Whether we’re in from the weather or whether we're out
Indeed, weather gives us an in to talk about

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (United States Department of Commerce)

In the mid-1940's, Southern Region Headquarters published a delightful newsletter named “The BREEZE.” This newsletter was an amalgam of “fun” news about Weather Bureau employees, biographical sketches of various employees, occasional letters home from employees on military furlough and the sons, husbands, and brothers of those serving in the front lines, station histories, descriptions of various weather service products, services, and procedures. Interspersed in these prose efforts were the occasional poems, some quite good, some mediocre, and some approaching atrocious doggerel. Taken as a whole, the poetry served as a way of celebrating the joy of the work on the one hand, and served as an acceptable means to voice complaints on the other. The following is a poem from “The BREEZE.”

MEAN WEATHER

by Elizabeth Dolan

Intermittent rain, I’ve learned,
Which forecasts tell about,
Is rain that stops when I go in
And starts when I come out.

In: “The Breeze.” Vol. 2, No. 8, September 10, 1945. P.6.

This is one of mine....

The Snowflake

The snowflake falls,
From winter skies ,
Flurries through chilly heavens.
The life it has,
Is shortlived,
But picturesquely pretty.
Its heart, it melts,
At the sight of you,
Fiery ball shining through.
With February skies
It dies,
As spring is born.

FOUR SEASONS

Spring
-- by Vance Oliphant

 ust down the road....around the bend,
Is the beginning of spring...the winter's end.

Some time must pass before spring truly arrives;
When flowers bloom and trees come alive.

The male goldfinch will turn to gold,
And shed his winter coat as if it were old.

Most of the robins haven't arrived as yet,
But they will be here soon,on that you can bet.

Ducks and geese will fly north to nest...
Some will stop nearby for a few day's rest.

We are now hearing the songs that the cardinals sing;
Some of the sweetest sounds of spring.

On the warming breeze floats mourning dove's call'
Announcing his presence to one and all.

Chipmunks awaken from their sleep undeground,
And scurry to gather some seeds they found.

With cheeks stuffed full, to their burrow they dash;
One of hundreds of trips to add to their stash.

Some other signs of spring are beginning to show,
Such as crocus blossoms above te snow.

We may get more snow before winter's end,
But spring's just down the road......around the bend.

Summer
-- by Vance Oliphant

 ust down the road ....around the bend,
Summer will creep in quietly and spring will end.

The warm days of spring are stil around,
But will soon pass by and summer heat will abound.

Though lilacs and tulips are still in bloom,
Summer heat will soon spell their doom.

Of the lovely spring flowers there will be trace,
But an abundance of others will take their place.

Petunias and roses will be the dominate strains,
And a profusion of wild flowers will cover the plains.

When thistledown is available, goldfinches will nest,
Their hatch will be later than all the rest.

The roar of lawn mowers will be around,
From now until autumn...a continuous sound.

Swimming pools will be busy with children at play;
Also adults, for part of the day.

The parks will be crowded...empty camp-sites rare;
The sandy beaches, hundreds of people will share.

All too soon, however, dew will turn to frost,
And all those long summer days will be lost.

Autumn awaits....summer will come to an end.
Just down the road....around the bend.

Autumn
-- by Vance Oliphant

 ust down the road.....around the bend,
Autumn will arrive and summer will end.

The days will grow shorter...the nights will turn cool;
The end of freedom for children.......the beginning of school.

Vacations will end...activities will change.
The lack of leisure will limit our range.

Squirrels and chipmunks will gather winter food,
And deer will soon be in a romantic mood.

Cheers will be heard from the football field;
They will continue until victory is sealed.

Potatoes will be dug...apples stored away;
The harvest of corn will soon get under way.

Some leaves will turn red......others to gold;
The glorious colors of nature will begin to unfold.

All too soon, those leaves will fall to the ground,
To tell us that winter is lurking around.

Then a hard freeze will come and autumn wll end;
Just down the road....around the bend.

Winter
-- by Vance Oliphant

 ust down the road......around the bend,
Mother Nature has a message to send.

We can't get complacent, because we know,
At any time now, it can begin to snow.

That first snow is great....a beautiful sight;
So nice to walk in, on a still winter night.

Those big white white flakes float gently to the ground,
And soon not a blade of grass can be found.

But, after awhile the real snowstorms will come,
And even those will be welcomed by some.

Snowboarders and skiers will be happy as larks,
And snowmobiles will be heard in the parks.

"Snow days" at school must be made up in the spring;
Kids don't care about that....a day off is the thing.

Strong winds from the north will drift the snow,
Covering everything down below.

But we can't get discouraged....winter will come to an end
Just down the road....around the bend.
