I have just heard of the sad passing of an old friend,  and local Landlord James Arthur Broadhead. Jim was a born and bread Barlicker who worked at Rolls-Royce before taking over the tenancy of the Rising Sun at Blacko, Jim and his wife Margaret, then moved from Blacko to take over the Fosters Arms in Barlick in the early eighties.  My wife Mary and i spent many a good time with Jim and margaret, over the years, but, sadly lost touch somewhat, Jim has suffered some ill health in the recent years but, always had a ready smile on occasion when we met. Jim will be sadly missed by all who knew him, and i take this opportunity to pass mine and Mary`s sympathy on to Margaret and Graham, his wife and son.

One thing about Good Friends is that you may lose touch over the years but they will still remain "Good Friends" as your post clearly shows

I never knew Jim beyond meeting him in ther pub.  Margaret Taylor as was is a different matter.  I knew her when she was living at Green Bank on the Gisburn Old Track and there are pics of her dad mowing on the site.  Look for Abel Taylor or Dick (the horse) in the pics section.  Last I heard Margaret's mother was still alive?

So sorry to hear this news.

I met Jim only once when I showed him the Broadhead Collection photos and he began to put captions to them. Go to Top of Page

Very sad news.  I've just spoken to Margaret, Jim passed away on Tuesday morning and although he had been ill for the last couple of years it was unexpected.  His funeral has not yet been arranged but is likely to be on Monday 7.4.08, I'll post the details as soon as I know.
Stanley - you'll be pleased to know Margaret has a framed photo of her dad and Dick.

Good.  I gave Margaret copies of the pics I did.  They were good days, making hay by hand.  Remind Margaret when you see her of the hours she spent trailing about with the Rover, that was a donkey rake, a big rake that you used to pick up the last wisps of hay in the field.  Not many women about who have used one of those......

I only heard about Jim last night and it is sad indeed. I have knowm him since the early fifties when along with other "bike" fans I used to attend "Trials" in my capacity as a marshal. What more can I say. "I always liked and got on well with him and I am proud to have known him".

Jim's funeral will be on Tuesday, 8.4.08 at Gill Church at 12:00, then to Skipton Crematorium.  Family flowers only, if anyone wants to make a donation Margaret is hoping she can buy something for the Oncology ward at Airdale NHS Charitalble Trust hospital, where Jim had been a patient.

I'm very sad to hear this news. I knew Jim and Margaret well in the 80s and enjoyed helping them buy a place in France, because I spoke passable French.

Jim was one of the last true pub landlords. A sense of humour, always happy to chat, a valuable friend. We won't see his like again.

Graham, you're right.  Under the new regime of pub ownership as a property speculation old fashioned victuallers are almost extinct.  I suspect that they have so little freedom and such high rents that none of them can stay the course long enough to get established.

Yes Stanley, and add to that the current regimes bid to stamp out the British way of life as we understand it, Oh dear, I feel a fresh topic developing in the depths of my rather English and not very PC brain.

Quite right thomo, and the beggars have almost succeeded. It's my dearest wish to find a pub where the bar staff smile, can add up in their heads, the beer tastes drinkable and there isn't a big screen television.

I have to despair when I read signs such as "Happy Hour, 7 to 8-30".
