Can we have a gardening website? I have decided to have a vegetable patch this year and the tomatoe and broad beans have already been sown and are coming up. The compost is looking great and I can't wait for the runner beans, courgettes, cut and come again spinach, radishes and onions! It would be great to have a forum to discuss things as I know I will have loads of unanswered questions soon...

Hello Peter , So far I haven't heard of frost damage to the Palms here , but we were VERY fortunate not to have such bad weather as other parts of the county....I'm trying to get in touch with my friend in Newquay (they had snow for the first time in years) but he's not answering his phone this morning. I have spoken to the retired editor of Cornish Guardian who lives near Lostwithiel , and he is not aware of any widespread damage either. (he's going to email a couple of reporters "down West" and will get back to me).....I'll be in Newquay myself tomorrow and will have a shufty !

Thanks Bradders, it will be interesting to know how widespread it is. All the same type of palm in this village have been struck down by the cold and it's going to change the appearance of gardens. Several other of the more tender types of shrubs look like they've been killed too.

Peter....An update on the Palm Tree situation. ... I was in Newquay today and there are no signs of frost damage to their considerable stock.
My friend Lesley was in West Devon all last week and tells me there were lots of trees with very sorry looking leaves (brown and dead looking , but still attached) ...She also tells me that a tree next door to her home in Derby has died.....(they had some minus temperatures down into double figures too)
I will pass on any further information from "the network" as I get it !

Thanks for the updates. Some leaves were still attached here but strong winds put paid to that. We'll have to see if they regenerate. One that we had to cut down some years ago to change the garden put out a shoot from underground but I note that one of those newly struck is now badly affected by fungus and will have to be destroyed. They are a characterisic part of the West Country landscape and will be missed until new ones get big enough to be substantial trees.
