Bruff, If I had labeled it "Chronic Ignorance" there would no doubt have been a heated response, thus I chose not to. I am also well aware that taking whatever precautions is more sensible than taking a risk, and if you want to make an impact, then go and talk to the people who have starving kids in Africa, point out that its their ignorance that is one of the causes of the problem they have, and not a lack of handouts.

I would like to know how stop my own cockerel from crowing before the crack of dawn, without causing his death at the same time, bless him.

Thinking about it, if the council DID take action against the cockerel, it would set a precedent for people to object to the noise nuisance of barking dogs and loud music.

They would have quite a caseload to deal with!

I shall be contacting the Environmental Department forthwith...

I don't understand the reference to starving children in Africa if I'm honest.

But a sensible sex education programme which tackles the ignorance I'm getting at, is about widespread access to appropriate contraception, access to good and comprehensive sexual health programmes and information, and stressing the importance of mutual respect and responsibility.  I leave 'relationships' out of this as this really is captured by respect there.  There's plenty of 'pleasure seeking' goes on outwith any long-term relationship and has done for a long time, done it myself.

There is a reason why we have, along with the US, some of the worst teenage pregnancy rates in the developed world.  And that's an approach which seems to exhort folk to just stop doing this sex business and if not, well you'll get no money from us.  Given this means potentially punishing the (innocent) child for the 'failings' of the parent(s), and arguably society, I'd rather not go there.

Anyway that's enough of that, I'm more interested in how we can help this cockerel out up Esp Lane.

I have fired off an email to my local councillor asking if the cockerel story is really true.

If it is, I suggest we organise a campaign publicising the number to phone if anyone wants to complain about dog barking, loud music, car/motorbike engines revving, lorries, factories, the call to prayers, football crowd cheering, oh and how about RAF jet planes scorching over Barlick - in fact, any noise which anyone may find irritating at any particular time.

Re the cockerel...I have twice related the Sytner story on OG, the last time on 3rd July this year in reply to Bradders. Here goes the third time!

"Thank you Bradders for giving me another opportunity to relate this story. I'll never forget it. I think you are referring to the wife of the man who owned the UK BMW franchise and also raced the cars, Frank Sytner. He and his good lady moved to a house in the country in the 1990s and promptly took the local farmer to court because his cows messed up the country lane with their dung. While in court giving evidence she said the cows made a lot of noise. The judge (bless him) said something like "Madam, cows are animals, they do make noises". The story stays with me because we regularly get people like them here. They buy a house right next door to a farmyard and then start proceedings to get the farm to clean up and make less noise (or next to the church then want the bells silenced). What makes it even worse is that these people often make more and louder noise than the cows when using their ride-on mowers for hours on end to mow their acres of manicured `orchard' or `meadow'."

`Nuff said.

Did you see Dennis Skinner skewering Cameron yesterday? He asked him a very simple question at the end of the debate: "Did you discuss BSkyB at any time during meetings with the Murdoch's?' Cameron said "That all he had had was 'appropriate ' discussions. The House saw through that one straight away.  Dennis hasn't lost his marbles yet. What I would have asked was whether a formal process of due diligence had been gone through when appointing Coulson. I thought this was mandatory in an appointment of that importance. Perhaps Richard could tell us if this is true? Have you noticed how Tory grandees are piling in to rubbish the story? Usually a sign that the defendee is in deep doo-doo!

Cockerels. The pen is going on the page today, Too late for the press this week, should be in next week's BET.

Slipped in while we were all looking the other way: The twenty protesters convicted for their action at  Ratcliffe on Soar power station  have won their appeal and been aquitted. Remember the police mole?

Irish premier goes for the Vatican's throat over the cover up of child abuse. Unprecedented and a very healthy sign.

Just back from my walk and I learned this morning that on top of being told to kill his cockerels, Jack lost his eight year old spaniel dog suddenly from a heart attack. They thought the world of each other and as most of us know, this is a bereavement  and a serious life event. I'm fired up! Radio off, writing begins! I've got my title, 'Love Thy Neighbour'.

The cockerel story is infuriating..all over the country there are beautiful rural spots with time honoured traditions being turned ino replica "cotswold" picture book villages by the retiring  UMC..nothing looks sillier in a strong scottish sea breeze than a string of pansies in hanging baskets shredded and tossed like tissue paper. If we are not careful the whole of our countryside will end up like Marie Antoinette's lawn!

On vetting, the level of security clearance needed depends as you'd expect, on the level of information you'll see, use, develop etc.  Thus, all civil servants have the basic vetting done, criminal records perhaps, who you say you are.  Really basic stuff.  However, if you have and are expected to have through your work access to national security stuff and other really sensitive information, the vetting cranks up considerably.  To the extent that your whole life is poured over, and your referees, family even, are cross-examined by experienced vetters for any hint of possible compromise.

I have a niggle that the PM's reluctance to say who vetted Mr Coulson means he didn't have the highest level clearance checks done which I would have thought was essential for a person in his position (maybe Mr Campbell can tell us?).  But also, many vetters are ex-police and well we know now what any mention of News Int and the police leads us to suspect.

So yes, perhaps Mr Coulson just had a rudimentary check.  Probably because the PM, as he's want to do it seems, couldn't see why he needed anything more.  It's all a fuss really isn't it?  Seems a trait this.  We have a PM (and an administration) that doesn't really think about things, take responsibility, question etc and so U-turn every 3 weeks.  And U-turns are not good no matter how much you spin that it means you're listening.

Thanks for that Richard, I thought it was the case. Just gone through a similar process connected with a fostering application, no tern was left unstoned!

Belle, re the cockerels, the story wrote itself, is with Roy Prenton and will be in the BET next week. Too late for this week obviously. Just to give you a preview, here's the last paragraph:

'I'm afraid I don't understand someone buying a house in the country with hens next door and then complaining because of the noise they make. Esp Lane has been in the news for a while now with objections to new development and calls to preserve the heritage and wildlife of the Conservation Area. People have been living in that small corner of Barlick at Townhead and Esp Lane for more than 2,000 years. The reason why the building plots are so higgledy-piggledy is because they are the sites of the original Iron Age houses. The inhabitants have kept livestock since time immemorial so aren't Jack's cockerels a part of the heritage? Love Thy Neighbour doesn't seem to be operating here. Is a bit of compassionate thought needed? Could a complaint be withdrawn? Could Jack's cockerels be spared to carry forward a more that 2,000 years old custom?  '

From cockerels to chickens...a man in our village from a long-established local family grows lots of veg and keeps chickens. He tells me that he can kill his chickens to eat himself but isn't allowed to sell a carcass to me. I knew that smallholders couldn't now kill their own cows, sheep and pigs for sale, but chickens...?

On a different topic, I've just posted my explanation of what has gone wrong with the presentation of medical research to the public, prompted by the height-cancer study in the news. See this Science Thread page.
