That could have been "Time to come home" but its all relative to where one happens to be living at present. Home is not always where you are living but where you consider your true home to be. In my case it is definately "Barlick". I was born there, grew up there, the bulk of both of my family, and my wifes family still live there and it is where the greater part of my happy memories were generated. I have travelled all over the world, resided in Hampshire, on Anglesey, in various ships for months on end and currently just out of Colne in what I consider to be "that other county". Living in a two hundred plus year old listed cottage with nice views is probably a lot of peoples idea of heaven, but on the other side of this idylic coin are walls two feet thick and solid, the ideal breeding ground for very nasty airborne spores that can attack the human respiratory system with complete impunity. The nearest bus stop and regular post box are one and a quarter miles away, the purchase of anything is as best a three mile round trip.  "So" we are going or coming home, hopefully in early May, to a 1936 stone built bungalow with more garden space, a brand new kitchen and bathroom, a garage that doesn't leak like a sieve, the one here used to be be a smithy and a monthly energy bill that is only 40% of that required to make this aged pile comfortable. The bus stop and post box are about forty feet away, and the neares pub, sixty!. We will only be separated from these three items by one of Barlicks four main access roads. The access road to our current home is a narrow country road that also serves as a testing run for boy racers, a proving ground for the dozens of local didums transporters (4 x 4s) and at night as a relief road for the HGVs that are too big to use the main roads in the area, oh yes, and the tractors that would look more at home on the vast plains of North America. But the greatest pull of all is dear old Barlick, that oft joked about hotchpotch of architecture and characters that make it what it is, and unlike most of the other mill towns in Pendle, it almost certain that it will never sucumb to the overwhelming displacement of its indigenous residents by those who have no time for our way of life and what it means. See you all soon.

Hope all is OK Thomo, what a harrowing time you are having amongst your house move, but health is the most important thing so I hope it all turns out well.  Regarding bronchoscopies - in my radiographer days (long long time ago) I used to assist in them, taking the xrays, and I used to think they looked very unpleasant procedures. But we never had a patient who complained or jumped off the table, and some of the patients were quite small children.

Our house is 200 yrs old and has very thick walls and I can identify with the heating problems - the only thing I would add is that once we have ours warmed up its like a storage heater and holds the warmth.

Hope you are soon back in Barlick.

Gill

Hope all is clear Thomo - and you get fighting fit.
My sister-in-law, who is almost 80, fell on the Wednesday before Easter and broke her arm - she was taken to Airedale where it was X-rayed and fastened up - they could not put in plaster as it is just below the shoulder - they then sent her home to an empty house, not informing social services or anyone.  The district nurse was due to call but rang to say no-one would be available until the Tuesday after Easter.  We got her in a respite home for a week and she is now happily staying in Cravenside for a few weeks.  So some people find everything OK and others not.

My internet connection is being blown all o'er t'shop today and my previous reply doesn't seem to have made it, but basically I said what Gus said. And I've sent you an email, Thomo - hope it gets through OK.

My mum also fell and cracked a bone in her arm last week, so we toddled off to Airedale A&E. Fairly quick treatment, arm in pot, in and out in about 3 hours. But they asked her to return for a checkup a few days later, and as I couldn't take her in the car she had to get 2 buses there, under the subway etc, and eventually saw the doctor who, in under 30 seconds, told her the pot was fine and to go home.

If only they'd realised what a difficult job it is to get there, they could surely have asked the local surgery to check it out.

However, as far as E's treatment has gone over the last 3 and a half years, I would have a job finding fault with their service.

Oops - we've gone way off topic!

Back to Thomo: you know you've got plenty of friends to help out when you move. Just let us know what we can do. Go to Top of Page

I have returned, thats another new experience under my belt. No doubt I will probably glow in the dark for several days, On the subject of transport, I was collected by car yesterday and taken to Airedale, the driver then went and had lunch and then waited until I was ready for release, returning me home in style and comfort. Allthis was courtesy of the Lancashire Ambulance Service. Mind you, all of this could be down to my body being used as a Earthly host unit by some Alien life force, at least, thats what it feels. Many thanks for the kind thoughts, I am sure that I will be fine when I get back to the town that I care a great deal about. Thank you Heather for the e/mail, I will reply shortly.

Thomo ... line up as much help as you can - both ends.  Things don't always go to plan and you're stamina may not be fully recovered at moving time.  All the best.

We have lift off, eleven days to go. Having spent much of the last three weeks undergoing tests at Airedale Hospital I was this morning given the "All clear" life span extended by X to the 10th, so much so that ,that I have been asked to allow various bits to be examined in an ongoing research programe aimed at detecting the big "C" earlier. I have signed up and already provided material. They have helped me and the least I can do is to help them. So, now we plan the move without the pressure that has been present of late. Now it really is time to go home, and I cannot wait. Barlick, that oft joked about patch of Yorkshire, yes "Yorkshire"! that hold all the memories good and bad that make life what it is. I have been all over the World, seen the big Cities, the sights and the fun stuff, but there is only one Barlick, bring it on, Love you all. Thomo.
