This is getting worse than Private Eye's often repeated photo of Andrew Neil.

What attracted my attention today....the interview on Jeremy Vine re the Portugal situation, where it was finally acknowledge we have Gordon Brown to thank for keeping us out of the euro and stopping us being in a worse mess than the one we are already in! If only the media had realised the brain behind the inablity to smile we might have had a few more years of stability economically, although belts would have been tightened.

Kev, does this mean Barlick is losing you? No, just a redistribution of housing. We're "empty nesters" now so I've bought something a bit smaller. No1 son and growing family get to live at the old house...

When the Shah was in power one of the opposition groups against him became public enemt #1 on the US bad guy list. The group lived in Iraq on the border with Iran and had promised not to get involved in politics in Iraq. The group numbering 30,000 under the leadership of a woman general were well armed and remained a thorn in the side of the Iranian political and religious leaders. When the Americans invaded Iraq the group gave up their arms with a written agreement that they would fall under US protection. The PMOI is still on the US terror list, the UK and most of the EU having been ordered by courts to remove the group from their terror lists. Over the last couple of years the Iraq army has entered the camp (Camp Ashraf) on a couple of occasions and caused death and injury, the US protection being non existent. Today again the Iraq army entered the camp (the camp is considered a refugee camp under the Geneva Convention) and killed at least 30, wounding at least 300....where were the US protectors?...apparentky they left, for some reason not able to intervene, and not wishing to hang around and watch the slaughter.
Could it be the oil in Iran that keeps the US from supporting the real opposition in Iran, the same oil that is providing funds to the Iraqi army to carry out such attacks??

Herb, the Marsh Arabs in Iraq got exactly the same treatment. They helped the Coalition in Gulf1, were promised protection then hung out to dry.
Tripps and Tom, The camera doesn't lie! Can't remember where those Speedos went.....
Newscorp throws in the towel, apologises and sets up a £20million contingency fund to pay anyone who can prove they were tapped. Very sensible calls for suspension of the takeover of BSkyB. Do we really want these crooks dominating the media? Investigation by police continues, only two more arrests but lots more to come out of this. How high does it go? How about Rebekka Wade admitting they paid serving police for info in evidence to the parliamentary committee? Were they the only paper doing this?
Anyone care to defend military action in Libya and Ivory Coast? I hear that some cuts are being reconsidered, maybe a few frigates? A few key personnel taken off the redundancy list. The Treasury dips into the coningency fund. Meanwhile the NHS reforms get a makeover ready for the U Turn they will announce after the May elections. Modern governance!
I shall vote against first past the post. The alternative will not be perfect but it breaks the log jam in our political process.

Just heard a snippet that Wendy needs to know. An old trick with a new born animal is to tickle the inside of their nose to make them sneeze and clear mucus from the air passages. I heard an email on R4 from a vet who swears by a drop or two of Lea and Perrins to do the same job. Evidently this use is recorded in the offical Lea and Perrins history as well.

I've just had an invitation by email from a company called JEP Consulting to a fund raising Pie and Peas supper and quiz in aid of the Barrowford branch of the Pendle Labour party. I wonder where they got my address from. The Gordon Prentice blog is the prime suspect! Since they have included several hundred addressees in the mail so it is very tempting to press the "reply to all" button.

David, that's a very bad lapse in security on their part to put all the addresses on CC instead of BCC and they deseve a good rollicking for it. The list will get used for all sorts of other things now by being passed on and will probably also get harvested by those who scour the Net for addresses and sell them. It's even worse because it shows what the recipients political leanings are. It makes you wonder about the intelligence or ignorance of some people who are allowed to handle personal information.

In desperation there are always they who will sink to the lower levels to achieve what they desire. As for the AV. I see one predictable response already, only three countries already have it and two are moving towards returning to the first past the post system. I see it as an expensive and dangerous move that could open another door for those who already misuse the voting system.

Catty. Quite! Worth remembering that AV is a compromise forced by the Tories and that what we should be voting on is full PR. That's why it's only used in three countries. Michael Howard said nothing about full PR. As usual a politcian gives an answer wich sounds plausible but on examination is partial and avoids the issue.
Heard a clip of Max Clifford on the Newscorp problem. He was quite open that he settled with NOW because of his commercial links. Interesting that he said that NOW was the only Newscorp paper he wasn't doing business with because the editor Coulson had fallen out with him. He reckons there will be hundreds of minor celebs out there wondering if it is worth going after them for a handout.

What we should be shouting for is a system where NO legislation at all can be enacted without a full referendum There will be those who say it would be far too complicated and expensive, and no one would understand it anyway. But what we have got at present is a bunch of people who do not understand what they are doing, furtively bringing in expensive and complicated legislation that does not work for the benefit of the population. Only the sad bunch that enact it (and their backers) get any benefit.

I just couldn't resist it........ I don't get out much.
Hello John Pope, nice to meet you. Sorry I wont be able to make the fund raiser in Barrowford, largely due to the fact that I live in Cambridge. I'm curious as to where you got my email address from, as I have no connection with Pendle Labour Party. The only connection I can think of is that I subscribe to Gordon Prentice's blog, but I'm sure he would respect my privacy, and not allow any third party to have my details. Did you really mean to make the full address list visible to me? I don't think that's good practice - maybe the other addressees value their privacy as well. I wish your venture well - it sounds like it will be a good do. Regards DT.
