Herb, the streets of Wooton Basset were lined again yesterday for three more of our lads. "The Book" that appears to govern the lives of IC4s condemns such practices, however, without wishing to do a Salman Rushdie I have seen at first hand that said book also appears to be open to a wide range of interpretations. In Karachi, I saw a great number of men who were not at all afraid of openly showing their "Affection" for each other, and at HMS Sultan one of the accomodation blocks was for Libiyan men under training, a part of my regular duties was to patrol the accomodation areas at night, you would not believe the amount of used condoms on the grass outside their block.

I'll agree with that! I'm watching the debate about the difference between the public and private sectors as regards being affected by recession. Interesting stuff and there does seem to be a disconnect there. I remember Roberts writing in the 'Classic Slum' that the acme of security in the hungry thiries was to get a job as a tram conductor or a bobby. Some things never change.

How New Labour have become First Class at Milking the System.
We should pay to fund a new block of flats, in the middle of the roughest estate in London so MPs can stay safe when they have to be in London. They can then see fist hand how constituents have to live. Oh and they should commute on the Bus like everyone else.
Next time I hear one lecture on about Climate Change I would suggest they close the underground car park at the Commons.

No end to bonus scams, Nortel had filed for bankruptcy protection, a judge has ruled that bonuses can be paid out to top execs. What about the poor saps being laid off and have no claims?

Attention catching sequence of events.
Last week a guy called trying to set up a fresh fish round with fish 'direct from Grimsby'. Had a nice chat and teased him that no fish came to Grimsby any more - all being landed in Iceland or Holland etc. He said no, I was sceptical. Pleasant good natured talk.
Friday, noticed Iceland had reduced it's bank rate from 18% to 17% - that's amazingly high compared to the rest of the world, and sign of a weak currency.
Item on the news today - says lots of Icelandic boats landing their fish at Grimsby again, after a long gap going back to the Cod Wars.
They are paid in pounds sterling within seven days. All is clear now. Icelanders don't want to be paid in their own currency, and prefer pounds, despite devaluation against the Euro.

I saw that report as well. I wonder how long it will last. It was interesting to hear what the manager of the fish market had to say. He regards it as short term and says that the biggest benefit to Grimsby is that it lets them prove that they still have the capacity to deal with large fish landings.
Obama throws a thousand billion dollars to the bankers and investors who got burned. Worrying. It's a bit like giving a dog a reward for crapping on the doormat. Or am I being too simplistic?

I've been listening to R4 as I write and am interested to see that they have come up with a solution to the troubled matter of expenses for second homes etc. Give them an extra £40,000 a year. This at a time when the poor buggers at the bottom of the pile are struggling. I'm not against them getting the rate for the job but their timing demonstrates how out of touch they are with the real world. Has anyone in the Westminster Village lost out to the credit crunch?

Needs to be phased in £5 k a year for the next 8 and it is not pensionable. It wasn't before and it shouldn't be now. It is not salary it is expenses.

Belle, how about 'The law of unexpected consequences'? Recession and rising food and commodity prices are bad news for most of us but the upside is that it stimulates indigenous suppliers to fulfill the demand because there is more profit in it. I was listening to Gardener's Question Time on Sunday and they were talking about grafting melon plants onto marrow rootstocks because that made it possible to grow them in cooler climates. Some tin and copper extraction is starting in Cornwall again. For a slightly different reason food and energy security debate may trigger improvements for farmers and (at last!) action on serious domestic electricity generation.
What grabbed me last night was the programme on C5 about the two Aussie lads who bought a lion cub at Harrods. The scene where they went back to revisit the lion at Adamson's gane reserve a year after leaving him there was heart-stopping. Evidently it's on U Tube. The lion was called Christian if that helps to find it.

I see that Fred Goodwin's house and possessions have been attacked. The perpetrator was interviewed on R4 and talked about hanging cardboard cut-outs of the bankers from lamp posts on April 1st and the real thing thereafter if nothing changed. I have no time gor vigilante action and would be surprised if the perpetrators aren't swiftly punished, I hope so anyway. However, this is a straw in the wind, there is much anger out there and the authorities would do well to taker note and consider how it can be defused. In Eastern Europe there has already been widespread street protest. We want to see justice but not vigilante retribution which is worse in the end than the original crime. Anarchy is never a good solution.
