Khaki in colour and sombre in content. "Cravens Part in the Great War", there will not have been many households in Barlick and what was then a much larger Craven Area, that did not have at least one copy of this book. In my immediate Family there would have been at least four and I still have two of them, albeit that one is with my son on Anglesey. Over the years I have seen them at jumble sales, in second hand shops and in piles of rubbish for disposal, even left behind when a house has been vacated. They will have turned up all over the place, I have come across them in Wales, the Isle of Wight and Hampshire, the two that I have belonged to my Father and Maternal Grandfather.
Many years ago I went through one of them from cover to cover noting those from Barlick who had given their lives in the service of King and Country, my notes are long gone so I am going to do it again, a few pages at a time, but this time I will include other local places within an approximate seven mile radius, Gisburn, Foulridge, Earby and so on. I will post my findings on here with the name, address and a precis of other details, as some are quite extensive, each name is to have the page number for my reference so that if anyone wants further information, I can soon find it. In a good number of cases there is a photograph, these I will copy and post in groups of ten at suitable intervals. In the book there are 391 pages so I will use a few abreviations hopefully all self explanatory, ie, KIA:- Killed in Action. MPD:- Missing presumed Dead. DOW:- Died as a result of Wounds, and one that is all too frequent, DFD:- Died from Disease or Illness.
One Man was responsible for the existance of these books and that was Mr, Walter Morrison Esq, JP of Malham Tarn who put forward the idea of the book and defrayed the entire cost.
There is quite a bit about the war itself up to page 50, including the Rohilla Tradgedy, then comes the dreadful list of those who did not come home, and so it is that on page 57 we find the first of Barlicks Sons, and is as follows:-

In these first ten pages the extent of family loss is made very clear for it was in the Village of Carleton nr Skipton that this comes up:-
P53, Lieut. Anthony E.K. Slingsby, 1/6th Duke of Wellington's (WR) Regiment, Son of Mr and Mrs J A Slingsby Carla Beck Carleton. KIA France 14th July 1915. Aged 26.
P57, Captain Arthur Morris Slingsby, MC 56th Punjabi Rifles, 2nd son of Mr and Mrs J A Slingsby KIA 8th March 1916 in Mesopotamia. Aged 30.
P58. Lieut. Stephen Slingsby of HMS Defence, 4th son of Mr and Mrs J A Slingsby. KIA in North Sea June 1916. Aged 24.
This out of a total of five sons all serving.
Lothersdale is the next local Village with on P62. Lieut Alec Wilson, 1st Herefordshire Regiment, Son of Mr and Mrs F J Wilson JP of Lothersdale. KIA 26th March 1917 in Egypt.
P54, Lieut. The Hon, C. A. Lister Royal Marines, Hood Battalion, Only surviving son and heir of Lord Ribblesdale of Gisburne Park DOW 28th August 1915. Elder Brother killed in 1904 in Somaliland.
Greystones, Gisburn. Lieut. George Proctor, Lancs Fusiliers, only son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Proctor. KIA 7th April 1918 aged 24. P70.
Marton is on P73, Which Marton is not clear, 2nd Lieut, Joseph Bryan Bushby South Staffs Regiment, son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Bushby, Schoolhouse Farm Marton, DOW, 4th October 1918 aged 26.

BARNOLDSWICK - DIED OF WOUNDS
News has been received this week of the death in France of Pte. Joseph Hoole, King's Own Lancaster Regiment, who succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds on the 23rd ult., having been hit in both legs, right arm and chest. Deceased, whose mother resides at Preston, was 25 years of age, and was formerly employed at the Barnsey Shed. He went out to France last May. During his stay in Barnoldswick he was connected with St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church.

BARNOLDSWICK - DIED OF WOUNDS
The death took place on September 5th, at the 3rd Australian General Hospital, Abbeville, France, of Pte. Herbert Hopkinson, Royal Munster Fusiliers. He had only been admitted to the hospital the previous day and an earlier message from the chaplain to his parents (Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hopkinson, 45 Bank Street, Barnoldswick) gave little, if any, hope of recovery. Pte. Hopkinson was 20 years of age. He had spent 14 months in France, and was home on leave in July. Before joining the Army he worked for Messrs. J. Moorhouse and Son, Wellhouse Mill, and attended the Wesleyan Church and Sunday School.

FORMER BARNOLDSWICK POSTMAN MISSING SINCE SEPTEMBER - PTE. ALBERT HUDSON
The death has now been officially notified of Pte. Albert Hudson, King's Royal Rifles, who had been missing in France since September 15th last year. Deceased, who was 29 years of age, was formerly a postman at Colne, and served nine years in that capacity at Barnoldswick before joining the Army in April 1915. He had been out in France about seven months when reported missing. He leaves a wife and three children living at 32, Melbourne Mount, Barnoldswick.

9th (Service) Bn. Kings Royal Rifle Corps
Having begun the attack on a fairly narrow front, 14th Division's sector had now broadened out. From the First Objective, where it was only 650 yards wide, it had expanded to 1,000 yards at the Second Objective (Gap Trench). From now on it was gradually to widen even further to reach as much as 1,500 yards at the Third Objective (Bulls Road) lying ahead. The men of 42 Brigade - 9/Rifle Brigade and 5/King's Shropshire Light Infantry in front, followed by 9/KRRC and 5/Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry - had suffered casualties even before arriving at Gap Trench. Now, leading the attack, they suffered more, but the widening front and consequent thinning of their formation may have saved them from even greater losses, especially east of Watling Street, where a German machine gun or guns at Point 91 in Gird Trench on their right front had already inflicted much damage . . . Parties of men had already pushed forward on either side of, and inside, the sunken course of Watling Street. They had attacked two German cannon - 77mm field guns belonging to the Sunken Road Section (Hohlwegzug) of 1/Battery, 7/Saxon Field Artillery Regiment, positioned just south of the junction with Bulls Road. In the encounter they had taken the full force of case-shot from these guns, commanded by Leutnant Kohl, son of a German general. Despite their losses, men of 9/KRRC under the command of Sergeant Elderfield, supported machine guns further back, crept forward close enough to pick of the crews. Others escaped, and in the end only Kohl and a few of his men were left to defend themselves with small arms fire. They finally disabled the guns and fled, but Elderfield's men shot Kohl before he had gone 10 yards. Gravely wounded, he was dragged 200 yards along Watling Street by his companions before they abandoned him to die.
Elderfield and his party pursued them northwards, reportedly as far as Gird Trench, but must now have become conscious of the lack of support being given by their own side. The few men still around them, both Rifle Brigade and KRRC, were thinning out, their ranks still subjected to withering fire from the machine guns at Point 91 and elsewhere in Gird Trench to their east.

BARNOLDSWICK - The Late Gunner W. Jackson
The remains of Gunner Jackson (whose death is reported on page 3) were brought home for burial on Wednesday night from Woolwich, and the interment took place yesterday (Thursday) afternoon at Gill Cemetery. The funeral was of a military character, the cortege being headed by a number of discharged soldiers, many of whom were in khaki, while at the close of the burial service (conducted by Mr. Thos. Lane, Independent Methodist) the 'Last Post' was sounded by the buglers.

BARNOLDSWICK - SOLDIER'S DEATH AT WOOLWICH
On Saturday the death took place at the Royal Herbert Hospital, Woolwich, of Gunner William J. Jackson, R.F.A., of 5 Bairstow Street, Barnoldswick. Deceased was 41 years of age and the son of the late Mr. James Jackson, of the Commercial Hotel, Barnoldswick. He went out to India in September, 1917, and was invalided home in the December following suffering from dysentery. Sine then he had been confined to hospital at Birmingham and Croydon. He leaves a widow and one little boy three years of age.

FORMER BARNOLDSWICK RESIDENT AMONGST THE KILLED
Many Barnoldswick residents will learn with regret of the death of Private Walter Macleod Johnstone, son of the late Mr. H. G. Johnstone and Mrs. Johnstone, of Latchford, Warrington, who formerly kept a high school in Park Road, Barnoldswick. 'Mac', as he was familiarly known amongst the companions of his youth here, was brother to Mrs. Norman Livsey and Nurse Johnstone, of Barnoldswick. He was 35 years of age, and had served in the famous Black Watch Regiment through the Boer War, where he gained the rank of corporal. Afterwards, drafted to India, he suffered much from fever and returned to England at the termination of his service nine years ago, since when he has been on the reserve. His time expired last January, but the moment war was declared Mr. Johnstone volunteered for service with his old regiment, enlisting as a private, and travelled all night to reach his headquarters, the regiment being one of the first to cross to the Continent. He was a highly intelligent and well-educated man, and well known and very popular in Warrington, where he was in the employ of the Richmond Gas Stove and Meter Co. Ltd.
The following letter, received from the Quartermaster of the regiment by one of his relatives, describes the manner of his death:-
" He fell at ----- on the 8th September... His death was sudden and painless, as he was hit in the head and breast when in the forefront of our line. He ' went out' with our captain, a lieutenant, and eight others. I shall be glad to give you full particulars anon, as in the meantime I can hardly cope with my work- 24 hours seem too short for a day. The non commissioned officers and men join in their deep regret for the loss of a dear and brave comrade, and with me tender to you their deepest sympathy in your loss."

BARNOLDSWICK
PTE. JOWETT KILLED
Pte. Ernest Jowett, of the London Regiment, Royal Fusiliers, who was killed in action on the 26th ult., was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Squire Jowett, 14, South Avenue, Barnoldswick. He joined up in January last, and went out to France in July. He was 19 years of age and was formerly a weaver at Messrs. Ormerod's, Ltd., Moss Shed. A letter received from his officer (Lieut. C.S. Morley), states that Pte. Jowett was killed at the commencement of an attack on the enemy, in which the battalion lost heavily.
