A2A - Access To Archives

The A2A database contains catalogues describing archives held throughout England and dating from the 900s to the present day.

Overview

A2A allows you to search and browse for information about archives in England, dating from the 900s to the present day. These archives are cared for in local record offices and libraries, universities, museums and national and specialist institutions across England, where they are made available to the public.

To find out whether archives are of interest to you, it is necessary to consult a catalogue or other finding aid. A2A allows you to search across detailed catalogues from over 340 repositories in England beyond The National Archives at Kew, so you may arrange to see or to obtain copies of specific, useful, real archive documents with a few mouse clicks. The database is regularly updated, so revisit often for newly-included catalogues.

Welcome to first-time visitors!

The A2A database will give you precise and useful information about archives in England. It is regularly updated, so visit often for the latest information. However, there are some things to bear in mind:

The database does not work in the same way as a World Wide Web search engine. It will search for the word or phrase you submit or select as a search term. It will not find similar words or phrases or rank search results as a search engine does.

The A2A database does not yet include digital images of documents. Nor does it include full transcripts (copies) of the text of documents. The catalogues in the database will help you find descriptions of archives, but they are not always a substitute for the archives they describe. Contact details for contributing archives repositories are available from the Contacts page and from your search results, so that you can arrange to see or order copies of the documents you are interested in.
