Questions about this subject keep cropping up amid closely related topics, so I thought it may be a good idea to expand on the subject. I will not go on about my qualifications to discuss Canal Boats so lets just give it a go and see what transpires.

At least it does'nt have bull bars on the front. It's all relevant of course to what you are going to use it for. When we went to Iceland a few years ago, we went on a day's "off roading" with a professional driver. Seriously harsh conditions (everywhere off the single main ring road in Iceland is seriously harsh). Vehicles used were big modified Mistsubishi jobs, 6 Ltr I think, 8 forward gears, 2 reverse, winches at back and front, inside cab inflate and deflate tyres, sat nav, car to car radio. The first thing they do when they import them to Iceland is to strip down and rebuild onto new strengthened sub frame with modified suspension and then rebuild adding all the goodies. These vehicles can cope with just about anything, 1:3 ice covered rocks down the side of a mountain is piece of cake, 4ft of water in a river, no problem. There was a Land Rover Discovery tagging along with our two Mitsi Monsters, we had to winch it up the steeper hard bits of the 3500ft mountain we were traversing, the drivers of our vehicles referred to it and all others of the species as a "Dinky Toy"!

I loved the film I saw of them doing this and when an almost flat tyre rolled off the rim they put it back on by spraying and inflammable aerosol into the tyre and lighting the jet to make a flame-thrower and the resulting explosion blew the tyre back on.  Dangerous but very effective.  I wonder how many eyebrows were lost perfecting the technique.......

When we visited Scotland last January we went on a safari up into the mountains round Loch Tay.

Our 'chauffeur' took the 4 of us in his proper Land Rover up and down tracks that even a mountain goat would have struggled with. I swear one ascent was near enough vertical - which we went up backwards! And it was snowing. And the driver just sat back and let the vehicle decide what gear ratio it needed. Well impressed.

When I had my Rav4 (or hairdresser's car as Stanley would have it) I don't think I ever needed to use 4WD and then the spring broke (we lived up Calf hall before the road was done up) whereas E's little old Fiesta coped without a grumble. I decided the 4WD thing was a load of marketing hype for the likes of your average person.

However, I admit that they are excellent for towing caravans and in real off-road conditions. It's the parent taking one 5-year-old kid to school in an enormous 6 litre monster that annoys me.

No further news re. the boat. Nice and snug, chestnuts roasting in the stove and Boo acting a bit chirpier.

We'll have to seriously review our water consumption, though. I can't see how we're getting through 180 gallons every couple of days but we do keep having to refill the tank despite our efforts to be frugal.Go to Top of Page

When the nurses in the Crimea complained about the lack of water Florence Nightingale is reported to have said that given a quart of water and adequate privacy anyone could maintain personal hygiene.......

I would love to post  a pic of the layout of Frabjous Day, before Thomo does the alterations, but since the website got improved, I can't.

It's very frustrating. Go to Top of Page

Stanley - thanks for the offer but the problem really does need sorting out. I don't have problems with other websites, just OGFB. I want to be able to post pics myself and add comments as and when I feel they need them.

Maybe this could take priority over adding more games - the site's becoming more frivolous and less substantial by the day. Don't get me wrong, I love the games, but I want to be able to add serious content too.

Ringo - Thomo has gone away to think about what we want and will hopefully get started asap.

Yes, but the hoops I had to jump through to get it there ... and even though I managed to upload it to the site, it won't let me grab an URL so that I can put the pic in context in a post, which rather defeats the object.

Before the 'improvement' I could at least do that.Go to Top of Page

H, if you miss the url when you post, go to the pic in the new pics list, ask for the full size and open up properties on the large pic, this gives you a url that looks different than the original but it works for pasting into a topic.  Make sure you open the full size one up.

Layout of Frabjous Day
OK - done that. Trouble is, this means a delay while the pictures are approved by the mods which isn't conducive to writing spontaneous posts.

If it's too quick for you how about grabbing the image of the approval page?

I think that Doc is going to take off the feature that has Admin approve pictures before they appear on the site so that all members can post straight to the site. Well that is what he told me a few weeks ago.

No - it's not that it's too quick, it's that the URL doesn't work when I use the insert image feature in the menu (ie the tree icon). I copy and paste it but it doesn't come up with a http://www. version of the URL, just the following:

files/pictures/2/2/20080101125017_49_1_rs.JPG

Adding  http://www.oneguyfrombarlick.co.uk to it doesn't work.Go to Top of Page
