If people don't turn up at the polling station as they believe there to be  no candidaate from a particular party then whatever names are on the ballot paper are irrelevant.

It does seem to me that the Lib Dems are prone to "electioneering" that places them at some advantage ......... then of course they taste power and priciples go out of the window. Nolic

I still can't understand why he would say Labour had no candidate, I don't doubt it  I just can't fathom it. I don't know about Barlick but  in the last 20 minutes I have had a leaflet from the SNP, Tories and the Liberals drop through my letter box so I know who is who !!!

That's how it used to be. No thinking about it, it wasn't it has always been as you describe. Only change is before they did it for Influence and Power now they do it for a Salary, as well

In fairness - and I think I've got this right - the LibDems were correct in one sense. There is no Labour candidate for the Town Council elections which are taking place at the same time as the Pendle Borough Council Elections.

If I'm wrong, please forgive me and correct me - but I can find no information about a Labour candidate for the Town Council either on the internet or via leaflets. If there IS a candidate, then they need a bomb up their bum to make them get their info out. And it doesn't bode well for their efficiency as a town councillor...

After the last general election I swore I would never vote LibDem on principle. However, in our local town council elections this would be tantamount to shooting myself in the foot.

Love 'em or loathe 'em, those who wear the LibDem badge (who I believe are not necessarily LibDems - explanation later) work well together as a team and get results for the benefit of the town as a whole.

Party politics should not have any bearing on the matter, in my opinion.

For the record I've always voted Labour in General Elections but I vote for the person in local elections. And like it or not, from past performance the LibDem team are the most likely to knuckle down, roll up their sleeves and do positive things for the town - not just talk about it. They don't always get it right, but then again, who does?

So why do I make that comment about them not necessarily being LibDems?

Barlick, historically, has always been a Liberal town. If you wanted to be elected, you went under the Liberal banner, whether you were secretly a Tory, Socialist or had no political allegiances whatsoever. Some will disagree strongly with my theory, but if you examine some of the actions taken over the last 100 years you will find Liberal decisions in Barlick at odds with the party as a whole.

Bottom line - forget party politics. Vote for the people who you think will serve the town best and ultimately benefit your life. You don't have to like them as buddies. You don't have to agree with the colour of their political party. You just want hardworking individuals who are prepared to stand up for the place where you live.

I think the root of it is "self gratification" in what ever form happens to "float your boat".  Power, money, self agrandisment, ego enhancement, moat cleaning, sexual gratification and virtually anything that you can think of that can be suitably disguised.

Some maybe.

But many genuinely want to be part of their community and help it improve.

It's very easy to make fun of others - less easy to get up off your bum and at least try to make a real difference to the world in which you live.

What's the alternative to either local, national or world politicians? People pounding their computer keyboards on forums, venting their spleen and saying what everybody else should be doing?

Loosely on local politics - I note that since I had an invitation to the Pendle Labour party's Barrowford Pie and Peas Quiz, and accused the organiser of using Gordon Prentice's blog address list,  I haven't had a single email from GP.  I used to get about two or three a week.  I rest my case.  Must join again - he's a bit bitter, but worth reading.

Good posts H. Very thoughtful, and positive.

There are very many people who genuinely want to have an input into the way their community is run. Sadly they are not allowed to by our peculiar idea of democracy.

I often attend our parish council meetings, and parish council meetings, are generally more "user friendly" than other "Higher" forms of legislature. However the number of souls who attend is extrememly limited because the people who sit on the council are not truly representative of the general parish population.  The parish councilors are generally big farmers, and commuter business people who are "token" countryfolk, interested more in their own little patch than the parish as a whole. There has not been an election of a parish councillor for the last ten years....there have, however, been "co-options". The ordinary people of the village are apathetic towards the parish council and thus seldom appear to see what goes on or to offer any opinion when matters are sometimes opened to the public for discussion.

I think this apathy is mirrored in the various levels of government. The punter knows he has no chance of influencing anything and so just suffers what is thrown at him.

I spent a good number of years on a Village Hall committe and things there were very different. The committee members were interested in the village, its hall and the people of the village and were open to receive and act upon village opinion. They were involved in the raising of the funds with which to run the hall, and could not rely on a precept on the rates. This meant that they were diligent when disbursing the funds.

With the number of people owning and usinhg computers the answer to  "What's the alternative" is partially answered, and no political parties would be needed to do the proxy voting for us in the Westminster  funhouse.

Ah, parish council - I am about to diverge from the main stream of this discussion but can't resist telling you about old Bill who was on the parish council committee for our village until his death. He was an eccentric and clever character who dressed in wellies and wore a pair of socks on his hands in lieu of gloves. At each meeting he would halt progress while he handed round polo mints to everyone including the spectators. One evening two policemen arrived to present some information before the committee meeting which was held in the small village school. Instead of parking at the pub and walking across the road to the meeting they demanded that they be allowed to park their car in the school grounds. Someone had to go off and acquire a key to open the gates which inevitably took a long time (it always does in villages) and prompted some grumbling among the committee members.

At the end of the meeting the policemen returned to their car to find Bill standing four square in front of the vehicle. They asked him to move but he said "You can't go out on the road in this car, one of the sidelights is not working". After verifying Bill's claim they thanked him and made to move - but Bill, a big man, barred the way. They argued that the light was OK when they left the police station but Bill was not convinced by this trickery. The argument continued for some time and the policemen found themselves regretting having asked to park in the school grounds. Eventually Bill allowed them to go but with a final warning: "If I find you again with a light out on your car I'll make a citizen's arrest on the spot!"

Nobody ever did find out for sure whether the policemen were telling the truth - or had some gremlin tampered with the car?

Nice to see that there's interest and debate about the local elections on here anyway!  There must be others like us but I don't suppose we are news. By the way, I note that on my ballot card there is a note that says: 'You cannot be issued with a ballot paper after 10pm, even if you are at the polling station before then.' Can't remember seeing that before. Disarming criticism from late comers.

I here we have another interpretation of the US mandate in Libya. Military advisers are evidently now allowed. Shades of Vietnam. Mission Creep is alive and well.

The main thing on my mind this morning is that one of my daughters is under pre-op as I write down in Cambridge for a procedure that is so new that the NHS hasn't even recognised it yet. News later on will be welcome!

Ian. Bugger! Keep trying, there's a job out there somewhere. I hope you find it.
