Can we have a gardening website?  I have decided to have a vegetable patch this year and the tomatoe and broad beans have already been sown and are coming up.  The compost is looking great and I can't wait for the runner beans, courgettes, cut and come again spinach, radishes and onions!  It would be great to have a forum to discuss things as I know I will have loads of unanswered questions soon...

The grass snake has been in the compost bin again this year, probably the same one as we showed in a photo above in 2008.

With all this rain we got a plague of slugs last week. I note the mention about a safer replacement for the metaldehyde slug pellets in this thread but I get my slug poison from Sainsbury's - it's their `Basics' brand 2% beer, pack of 4 large cans for 96p. I put a couple of inches in a jam jar and lie it at an angle on the soil by the affected plants overnight (preferably wet night). The slugs love the beer and drown in it (presumably happily though!). I put several jars out and eliminated 15 slugs in the first night. The following two nights nothing. Either I've caught `em all or the ones left are tee-total. I think Sainsbury's would be better to re-package the beer and sell it as slug poison!

I thought it might be interesting to put Guinness in a jar and see if it was more or less effective, but changed my mind - I don't want to go out in the morning and find a drowned steeplejack in my jam jar!

I hate snakes....all snakes....just the thought of them makes my legs go all saggy. I wouldn't harm it, but I would be phoning some-one from the council to get rid of it.  Sorry Tizer...
As far as gardening goes, we are in discussions at present about increasing the size of our garden beds and therefore decreasing the area of our lawn. (decreasing the size of the lawn being the main objective) This is good news, because I may finally get a decent edging around the lawn to contain it....I spend a lot of time pulling bits out of the garden beds. I drew up a plan on the weekend. Febby took one look and hasn't mentioned the job since. I think he suddenly realised it meant he would have to do some digging!

Moh, you are probably right!

Maz, sorry if you got a fright last year when I posted the piccy of Mrs Snake. I'll have to find a more acceptable picture. Thinks....

How about Mr Rabbit who visits us every spring for a week or two and helps cut the grass? Very partial to a bit of clover.

Had to laugh the other day after reading an article about an English company that received a small parcel from Australia (books I think) that containted a red back spider.  Apparently they had to ring a special service to properly identify it, then it was put in the freezer overnight to kill it  ... I know 'O, H & S'  etc , but Ha! wouldn't of taken us that long to dispose of it.  Baygon is a wonderful thing .. we all have some on-hand.  Cool

All thru the fields and meadows gay  ....  Enjoy

I hate spiders, was a bit worried when we were sitting on rugs at Barossa Under the Stars in case there were Aussie spiders about!

I think the red-back in question was delivered to a local company who deal in beauty products. There was a piece in the BET about it.

Don't come to Somerset if you don't like big spiders! We do a great line in whopping arachnids. The couple who lived in our house before us said that the wife wouldn't go into the garage because of the wild life in there. I won't post any pictures.

I have to report that the herbs in the front garden can no longer be accurately described as thriving, they are RAMPANT! They've started to climb through the railings and I'm going to have to do some serious trimming. Does anyon in Barlick want bunches of herbs to hang in their country kitchen?

Moh, Janet and I are about 20 miles from Misomer Norton and Mells. If you would like us to check the graveyard and photograph any relevant stones, or photograph any buildings or monuments, let me know. If so, PM me with any relevant information.

Thanks for the offer but I do have 'photos of some graves which my Canadian second cousin sent me after one of her visits.  There are so many names I would like to check that I would have to bring my Hurley/Jones files with me.  Hopefully we will get down there next year.
