Jack is making a lot of friends in Barlick. I don't know why, maybe it's his face markings but people on the street feel the need to stroke him. Women in particular fall for him.

As you know, I had a bad experience with Joe, the lurcher from Irlam. I was very wary about taking another feral dog on but I'm beginning to think that Jack will make it as a member of the team. He's good at coming to hand when off the lead but I'm not saying he'd take any notice if he was distracted.

He's fast and very agile and seems to have lungs as big as a bucket, I haven't heard him pant as though he's out of breath even after a hard run. As for jumping, he's like a cat. Here he is on his favourite perch. Someone asked me the other day why I don't stop him doing it. It's easier to clean the drainer twice a day!

[This topic started as Jack's blog but in Jan 2008 I had to put him down because he started attacking strange dogs.  His successor is Black Jack. a Patterdale pup, no point erasing Jack the Lurcher from history....  he was a good dog and what happened wasn't his fault.  He had too bad a start.....]

Comrade, Jack, good morning. Good luck at the vets Jack.

I think Jack might need his boot and a sock on today. I've only been out to put the ashes in the bin but its cold. I'll have to stoke the car up and defrost it  soon as Gundred is at work and there are no buses to Blacko.  Nolic

We're back at the vets tomorrow (Tuesday) and then hopefully he can have a run.  Poor lad is missing his burn-ups.

What is the strange power this man has over women and animals......  I've never seen Jack jump onto anyone's knee before.  56lb of lurcher on Doc's knee.

Mel, I'd missed the question.  Jack had his clips out and is now back on full song, he's healed up nicely and no signs of any internal damage.  Speaking of which, it's time I took him out into the rain.

Awww, Jacks my Buddy - we have an understanding between us. If I sit down he wants to get up, I'm sure he would sit on my shoulders if he could.Go to Top of Page

I'm sure you will all be relieved to know that Jack passed his first solid stool for a week yesterday.  He'd been off colour for a day or two, acting strangely as well, and on Tuesday last week he exploded, poor lad lost control at both ends.  At first I thought it might have been my fault because I'd let him eat the end of a nice bit of Cheddar but I soon realised he had picked something up.  60lbs of lurcher sat looking at you plaintively and shivering is not a reassuring sight.  However he was not feverish and I just gave him 24/7 nursing and walks every two or three hours.  He started eating again on Saturday and yesterday was back on full song.  All quite boring really but I heard a poem the other day on Radio 4 about the price you pay for having a companion animal.  The poem was actually about their early death but it struck me that there are prices to pay along the way as well.  I've always said that the best measdure of friendship is how much latitude you give people.  I suspect the same applies to dogs.......

Jack got bitten on the chest yesterday by a mean little black terrier.  Clean tear of his skin on the chest, I am doing my Florence McNightshade act and although he's sore he will be OK.  I've got my eye on it, any suspicion of infection and he's off down to the vet.  I've just had a look at it and put some more antibiotic ointment on it.  It's dry, clean and not inflamed at all.  He's licking the ointment off as I write but there will be enough left on to do a bit of good.
