Earby and District Local History Society
The Earby and District Local History Society was founded in 1995 when six people attended a meeting at New Road Community Centre in Earby.
Membership is now ten times that and still growing. A good proportion of the members are "out of town" members who are either exiled Earbyites or have ancestors connected with the area.
The Society's area of main interest is the Ancient Parish of Thornton-in-Craven and includes Thornton-in-Craven, Earby, Kelbrook, Sough and Harden.
AIMS OF THE SOCIETY To raise awareness and foster an interest in local history and facilitate research into the heritage of Earby and District including Earby, Thornton-in-Craven, Sough, Kelbrook, Harden, Hague and Salterforth.
MONTHLY MEETINGS The Society meets on the third Tuesday of the month at New Road Community Centre, New Road, Earby (unless otherwise announced). Meetings begin at 7-30 and usually include a talk on an historical subject with local interest where possible.
Visitors are very welcome to attend.
Admission is £1 for members and £1-50 for non members including tea and biscuits .

I wish them well and hope they have a good turn-out but this topic popping up reminds me yet again of the mystery that has puzzled me ever since OG started. I would have thought that once local organisations realised they had a ready-made audience they would pile in and participate as an ancillary to their main web activities. Where are the churches and local organisations? Certainly not joining in on this site. Doc has done his best to attract these people but no joy. All I can think is that it is some form of dog-in-the-manger attitude. I have noticed the same thing with my BET articles, I've been doing a weekly article on history for eight years now and have yet to receive any sort of enquiry from schools or teachers..... Very puzzling, but whatever we do they will go their own sweet way.

"I have yet to receive any sort of enquiry from schools or teachers"
Perhaps you need to be a little more proactive Stanley?. Lots of groups are looking for guest speakers, eg W.I. - University of the third age, Local history societies. etc. Perhaps the current pause in writing should be aimed at marketing? You are a busy person so I think you need an agent.

Calluna's songs are also a good starting point for Children to become involved in the local history. Stanley you could do a jig to " James & Mary Jane " and then explain how the Engine works. In fact I would pay an entrance fee to see that.

Don't know where to put this request, so I shall pop it here. Can anyone tell me anything about a firm called BLIN and BLIN'S, which I believe operated somewhere around Townhead, Barnoldswick? I'd like to know what they did as my grandfather worked there (I know he was there in '64 anyway). Previously he had been a mill worker, so I don't know if it was an allied industry.

Also try sending a pm to a guy called Gus who sometimes frequents a website that you often visit.
