Donald is right.  That's why when you look at anything built out of stone up on the moor you will always find a quarry or delph hole nearby and always uphill from where the stone was needed.  Heavy weights travel easiest downhill and very often on sledges and not wheeled carts.  They are much safer on steep downhill stretches.

I'm not looking for a career change - how would I plug in my Mac to access OGFB on top of Ingleborough? It's just that I've always fancied the idea, but I've no ambitions to recreate the Great Wall of China. I'd like to volunteer to fix walls on, say, the top o'Weets which have been there years and years but are now falling into ruin. One day they'll have gone forever if we don't try to preserve them, and it needs to be done properly. A 60-year-old female friend of mine took a 2-day course in Derbyshire and now helps to repair/build walls all over the place. Another friend (male, 50 years old, just for the record) reversed into a wall when we lived up Calf Hall and the landlord was going to charge us £80 to repair it, but my Derbyshire friend came over and fixed it in half an hour. Much better and stronger than it was originally, I might add.

H, have a walk up on to Letcliffe Park and have a look at the piece of wall that faces out towards Silentnight and Skipton.  There's a piece there that's been vandalised and is easy to do as it's only half down.  Nobody would say anything to you if you gapped it.  'Gap Walling' was the way repairing damaged walls was described.  Some men made a living doing nothing but that.  I knew and old bloke once up Blacko who dod it for years.  He said his best friend was his hammer, he used to be paid by the yard and always marked the stones a yard either side of the fap so he got two yards extra.  If you want a stone hammer give me a shout, I'll fit you up with one.

Mick - I have first hand experience of letting agencies in Barlick. There is one I would advise you to avoid, and one I can specifically recommend. If you're still interested in renting somewhere, let me know and I'll send you a PM (so's I don't get done for slander ) You might also want to get a copy of the Barlick & Earby Times and check out the classifieds (I could post you one if you want).Go to Top of Page

How about one for Metal Detecting / Treasure Hunting.

I consider all artifacts recovered from the ground "treasure" of one sort or another, all articles have a tale to tell and I bet quite a few of the contributors to this site could shed light on some of the more obscure bits that turn up.

That'd be a good one.  I'm thinking of getting one in summer and looking for the fabled O'Connor hoard up at Prospect!  Wonder whether I'd be on half shares?

Yes he did.
The last report of him was that someone had seen him up at Prospect, waving somethng about and shouting "Where the bloody hell is it?"

First rule of a responsible detectorist is to always seek search permission from the landowner before searching, all land is owned by someone, if you search without permission you can be charged with trespass and theft. You should also carry 3rd party liability insurance. This can be obtained by affiliating to either the NCMD (National Council for Metal Detecting) or alternatively FID (Federation of Independent Detectorists) http://www.newbury.net/fid annual subscriptions are very reasonable. FID supply all members with an ID card and £5M 3rd party insurance. They also support and promote a code of conduct for responsible detecting..

As to the half shares, The law normally supports equal shares for finder(s) and landowner, a formal agreement can be established if required. The "Treasure Act" determines whether or not a find should be declared to the coroner. There are a number of rules regarding what constitutes "treasure". It is a legal requirement to declare these finds.

There is a voluntary recording scheme in place to report finds to preserve the histocal context.

I can let you have some more information if you wish.

This looks like a better deal than our Dear Leader has on offer.
