Does any-one know the names of any farms that were destroyed when Widdop reservoir was built.  Or is there a list of the tenants to these farms any-where?

Stanley, you mentioned that some members might be interested in more technical details relating the construction of Widdop reservoir...I will have a look at the old reports and see if here is anything of note....

The last remaining barn at Higher Houses is likely to come onto the open market again in the near future...its not required for operational purposes...and hasn't been for a long time. It is a storage facility at the moment but is quite empty. There is a date carved above the barn door saying 1868 and I think the reservoir was planned and built in a short time frame from 1869. Inside the barn there is long, old workbench constructed from wood whcih is stamped 'HCWWBS', which I take to stand for Halifax Corporation Water Works-Building Services'...or similar. Of course in the days of the HCWW there were big gangs based in depots and huts all over...and they would have been HCWW joiners, bricklayer masons, painters etc. who would have used places like this. Now of course its all contracted out..

Must dash. Off for some training at Esholt Hall!

There's a very good book.....  G M Binnie.  'Early Victorian Water Engineers'.  Also, if you're interested in the failure of dams, read McCullough.  'The Johnstown Flood', wonderful story of a famous collapse in the US and the aftermath.  Simon, this site is interested in everything!  Go to it!

hi;i'm the member of the public who Simon F referred to! My ancestors were living at Widdop in the 1841,1851,1861 censi on the 'northern'---Wadsworth-- side of the valley ----and from my research further back they were probably there back to circa 1600.I have looked at the earlier maps,1834,1851 and others to try and establish the various buildings;looking at the censi order of occupants and a will from The Pasture House {Shackletons} it looks very likely that my Shackleton family were living at the Widdop Farm----Higher Houses.  Simon said the old farm house was demolished some years ago;when I visited Widdop a few years ago the two barns were still there and one of them had a central hearth in the middle of the eastern end and a later fireplace against the wall suggesting that this building had also been a 'house' of some years-------this is the 'barn'which was recently demolished.
I have recently been into Halifax library and discovered a grren envelope at the reference desk which included map references of plots etc. of Widdop but it isnt clear from which map they are based?? I would love to know?
I would be most willing to meet up with anyone------especially Sue who appears to be clued up on things----to share our knowledge and interest.

John, you do right to be careful.  If you click on the faces to the left of any of Sue's posts it gives you contact info, click on PM and you can send a private message to her.  Next time that person logs on it flags up a warning that there is a message in the system.  try it....

This topic seems to have fizzled out back in 2008 but thanks to suggestions from other OG members I've rediscovered it and dragged it back up.

I'm looking for the Rawsthorn(e) family of hill farmers who were apparently evicted to make way for the reservoir (see separate topic) and so I will be soaking up any info on anything related to the subject.

I wonder if Sue is still doing her research and whether I could take advantage of it?

Sue? Are you there, chuck?
