Hi, I have been reading through the forum for a couple of days, and thought that some of you would be interested in The White Lion Pub in Earby. I was not sure whereabouts suited the thread (in here or the eating out section), but we are newish to the area and will be re-opening the pub on the 10th of October 2006.

I hope this is a welcome addition to the venues, pubs and eateries in the area, and would gladly answer any questions and queries about the pub.

I will post in the eating out section when we are up and running so any visitors can enquire about our menu, prices, opening times etc - and it would be great to see some open and honest opinions about the service we offer, this way we can aim to cater for the needs of our customers, improving on any areas where we fail to satisfy.

The pub is undergoing extensive refurbishment, but will keep it's traditional features. We are aiming to provide the basis of any good pub - good food, good beer, and reasonable prices. We are creating an area specifically for meals with a good menu of favourites and specials, as well as the traditional pub menu.

We are also looking to create an external area, ideal for outdoor eating in the summertime.

Any comments, queries, questions and suggestions are more than welcome, and I hope we will see some of you upon opening for a drink.

Thanks for reading  - TheWhiteLion.

We spent many a happy hour in t'White 'Un on Thursday nights when we had the folk music evenings there. Unfortunately it was necessary to change venue to the Station for reasons I won't go into.

You may be interested to read Jim Walker's account of the Earby murder of 1892 (look in the Articles section of this website) because there's a connection with the White Lion. The bloke responsible lived just opposite (houses now demolished) and the pub was a regular haunt of his.

I've also written a song called "Unholy Moses" about the incident and your pub gets a good mention (does this qualify me for a free pint??

What sort of food will you be serving? What kind of beer? Are you a Free House or part of a bigger group?

Anyway - Good Luck with your venture. It's heartening to see such an important historic building brought back from the dead - well done!Go to Top of Page

Thanks for your interest, as of yet the full menu is not decided, partly due to wanting the chef to have a fair input, and we have not yet employed a chef!

We are part of a bigger group, but want to run the pub as we would our own - the food side of things will be completely run by ourselves with no brewery input.

The beers are still in the balance also, and any suggestions are welcome - i.e. favourite ales.

We would like to retain a traditional atmosphere within the pub, respecting the building. And hope to make it a welcoming place for the local public, and visitors alike.

The article is an interesting read, thanks. And your song, do you have a link to the lyrics? We are wanting to feature some traditional local artwork within the pub, and may be interested in a framed version of the lyrics to feature - then you may qualify for a free pint!!

I'll second Another's motion - definitely real ale at a decent price - that will go down well with all the locals who've had to put up with rubbish beer costing a fortune for so long.

One of the reasons why the old pub struggled in recent years was its poor "beer experience". If your beer's no good and nobody can afford to buy it anyway, you don't have much of a pub, really!

How's about Copper Dragon from Skipton? Or Old Speckled Hen? I dare say a lot of other people would prefer lagers, so you'd need a decent selection of them too.

I know I'm in a minority, but a decent vegetarian menu is always welcome and influences what pubs I patronise. By decent, I don't mean reheated frozen veggie lasagne or cheese omelette. Summat a bit tasty and unusual - if I can cook it easily at home, why would I spend my brass eating it elsewhere?

As for the lyrics - I'd be delighted to supply them. But I reckon it's worth at least a pint and a half

I hope the opening lines aren't a bad omen for you:

"New start, that's what you wanted..."

I will definately take on board the suggestions, and any future ones. The idea for us is to sell what people want - and remain flexible. If something sells well we'll keep it if it does not we won't! We don't want to force people into buying what's available - if it's not what they want. There is obviously a limit to the flexibility as not everyone wants the same lagers, or the same real ales, and we have to keep some continuity.

We want good beer - we know good beer ourselves and would definately not sell what we would not buy. Lager's are obviously popular, but we will respect the demands for traditional ales, and vary according to demand. As for price, we will be competitive and understand people won't pay hard earned money for poor quality beers.

We will be definately providing a vegitarian selection, and as well as traditional meals, there will be more varied tastes on offer at reasonable prices - and not frozen lasagne!

Also, just out of curiosity, anyone know anything about a ghost in the pub? I've heard a few whispers - not sure how true this is.

Oh yes there is a ghost! (or so they say)

Lots of weird tales told about this pub. No doubt you'll be enlightened in due course.

The only unwelcome guest we ever saw was a small, furry 4-legged one with a long tail - though I'm absolutely sure there won't be a re-appearance with the new landlords.

I'll leave it to Nolic to explain about traycle.Go to Top of Page

Punch White Lion into the site search engine and also Jackie Waddington.  Look through every nook and cranny for a pic of a weedy youth in oversized boxing shorts, it used to be hung in the pub and has vanished.  Do the search, good story and well worth commemorating in the pub.  Do you let well behaved lurchers in?

I hope you can put some pictures on the site showing the White Lion and the refurbished interior.  I spent too many hours in the pub in the early seventieswith my old mates, Keith Mellor, Billy Lee, Stephen and Stuart Schofield, Les Etherington, Roland Laycock, David Wiseman, Gary Collett and John Pollard.  Darts in the tap room on the right as you go in was very popular as was dominoes.  If there was no room there or you wanted to impress a young lady, there was a nice room on the left as you went in.  The Schofields were very good at shooting for goal on the slot machine just by the door on the way in on the right.  If it was a busy night they would open a room past the bar on the right hand side up a few steps.  Often we were underage and would drink lots of best bitter or best mild, smoke like chimneys then drive home and drop off our mates.  I'm glad my kids are a lot more sensible and safety conscious than I was!
