My Dad loves gadgets. Videos, DVDs, TVs, tape recorders, cameras, cine films, and titling equipment, even computers (not bad for a 92 year old) So I can see where I get it from . I love kitchen gadgets. My friends have to drag me out of kitchen shops. My other failing is craft things . I have knitting machines ( 2) sewing machines ( 2 until today) , art materials, card making materials. I love searching through wool and fabrics and books to do with my hobbies which make up most of my book collection . Today I got a new toy!!!!
When I retired I treated myself to a new sewing machine, an all singing all dancing machine..one of the best that did not do freestanding embroidery motifs. I wanted one of those but could not afford one. Last week I went to the craft fair at Manchester and discovered I could buy a stand-alone embroiderer. They must have been around for years but I did not know. So this week has been a steep learning curve, internet research, machine demonstrations, and today I bought one. I have spent all afternoon 'playing' with my new toy, and all evening researching free ( and expensive) add on software. I have become so much of an expert I was even able to help outthe demonstrator in the shop this morning when another customer came in wanting information.
One of the types of software will enable me to embroider from my own art work and photographs. The sky is the limit. So if you don't hear from me much you know where I will be. Sinking under a pile of embroidery. mmm I wonder what I shall make. Perhaps a nice embroidered cover for my lap top or my paint palette!!!!!

Go for it Suze,
f I ever get the courage to face the rage on discovery I will post pics of some of C's embroidery and mixed media work. Its different and very good. I did show some of her work to a neighbour who had been to art college and though she accepted his compliments she was a bit annoyed at me for embarrassing her!!
She bought herself a fancy sewing machine last year that she does embroidery on.
Do you know that the hospitals used embroidery as OT for wounded soldiers in WW2. I recall as a youngster finding these various embroidered things in a drawer and being told by mum that my dad had done it whilst recouperating from his wounds. I remember one was of a lady in a crinolene dress in a garden and it was very good. I seem to think I was told never to talk about it with dad and I never did. Nolic

I wish I had known all this!
I have done a lot of hand embroidery. (there is something about the machine stuff that I can appreciate but it is not for me....but WOW...I know the feeling of being blown away by a new interest...please let us know more about this as you progress Sue.
And C....we could have talked about it for hours..... (if only I had known)

I fancy doing smocking, I am patiently waiting/hoping for a grandaughter for my first granchild. As m y eldest ( mother tobe) is anything but girly I somehopw think that even a grand daughter will not allow me to unleash my passions!!. As for hand embroidery , I struggle with that. I have never been neat enough. I can't do cross stitch as my eyesight struggles with changing from looking at the clth and the pattern. I have excellent very short sight but poor distance vision. Machine embroidery that I have designed will enable me to do some thing akin to it. I admit the machine i bought is not top of the range and will not do many complex tyings but itwill do enough for me. Today I am going to practice placing designs where i want them , and building up combinations of the preset designs and saving them as a file. Don't laugh, but I am going to make a cover for my MOBILE PHONE!!!!
Nolic, which machine does C have.

Confusion explained Nolic. (Still,,,I would be interested to see your daughter's efforts. Seems like she is quite the textile artist. I can really appreciate such talent.)
Sue...I think a small project is an excellent place to start....one can learn an awful lot from such projects. (I have a little pouch that I hand embroidered for those personal packs of tissues...only a small thing but I still carry it after many years. Probably about the size of a mobile phone when I think about it!)

Ah yes., most colleges use a Bernini. They are good machines .
Here is my first if somewhat simple attempt at customising pre set designs. A mobile phone cover! The hardest part was getting it to fit the phone

A scrap of curtain material , given me in a 'job lot' at a warehouse. I intend browsing through said sack of oddments to see what else I can make now. I have found loads of websites with free downloadable motifs to embroider.

I have down loaded some free software ( a demonstration program) and have spent the afternoon being creative. It has taken a few hours to work out the basics but now I can import and export designs from different sources, change sizes of designs, manipulate designs, change colours, and many other things. I can transfer from machine to computer and vice versa. One GREAT hurdle yet to master is creating my own design.But hey, I have only had the machine 3 days

Manipulated down loaded image of a cake( for free), merged with alphabetic greeting and resized to fit my machine. There we have my youngests birthday card.

I am now well into the software for design and manipulation. I hope to convert a couple of my less complex paintings into a design. This is GOOD FUN. Most of my hobbies all joining into one
