Tesco are considering opening a store in Barnoldswick.

They claim it will create 175 jobs and keep shoppers in the town, as well as saving local firm L&P Springs.

There are 2 exhibitions taking place this Friday and Saturday for people to gain more information.

Views, anyone?

I often wonder how many of the 'ethnic' dishes served in say an 'Indian' restaraunt would be recognised in India! Best Chinese I ever ate in was in NY, Kosher and run by a Jewish family.

There is much truth in that Stanley, My best Chinese was in Singapore made by Malayans, best nasi goreng in Borneo and best ever steak, Capetown and the Impala steak in Kenya was something else, pale, but delicious, not keen on sparrows on sticks though and 100 year eggs are a leap of faith.

13 year old putrified shark, buried and resurrected from a lava bed is considered a delicacy by some in Iceland.

Almost certainly not available in Tesco.

Sounds very similar to the Tory Party here then ...

The Tesco planning application is in to Pendle.

After a conversation yesterday it would appear that it won't come out for public consultation until April-May next year as the project is so large, and the need for so many authorities to be included in the process.

I had heard that the roads had already been done by LCC, but maybe the problem about the Green has caused some major issues.

According to the pendle planning officer, the new Spar down on Skipton Road has also cut down the requirement for retail space to a fraction of the Tesco development.

Does sound like it could be initially refused, so that Tesco has to take it to appeal.

I see in the BET today that Mr Magee of Tesco has put forward the fact that Barlickers spend £26million a year out of the town. Apart from wondering where he got this figure from, the tenor of his remarks gave the impression that Tesco could capture some of this spend. What would they do with the money? Export it out of the town of course.  Does he think we haven't the wit to work this one out?

As I have said before I have no strong views either way on the development but I really do object to this sort of crass statement. The bottom line is that the sole purpose of any development in Barlick is to increase the Tesco market share. They are not a charitable organisation, so why not be honest about it?

"Export it out of the town of course"
It's not as simple as that.  They might export the profit, but certainly not the spend.  My son finished university with zero debt thanks to me and Tesco.

David, I agree in respect of wages but the bulk of the money is payment to non-local suppliers and of course the profit.

here's the planning documents:

http://bopdoccip.pendle.gov.uk/PlanApp/jsp/RDgetAllAppDocs.jsp?PlanningApplicationNumber=13/11/0566P

I agree with Stanley about the non-local sourcing, and of course all that has to be hauled here and there around the country. Remember we have no A roads, and the traffic snarls up when some of those 40 footers drift through the town.

Of much more concern to me is what added value Tesco think that they can bring to Barnoldswick.

Are we forgetting that this is not just a "Hate Tesco" topic, but about how any new development may, or may not benefit the townsfolk. As for benefiting non local suppliers, there are manifold cases of that already. And what about the possible fate of the intended site, if LP Springs move out?, it could become just another empty industrial unit, and there are quite a few of those already.

Some interesting stuff if you look at the proposed layout plans. All the goods traffic access will be off  Skipton Road and will create a staggered junction with goods access down Masons Way in close proximity to the West Close Road junction. That should be fun when its shift change at Rolls! I would have thought it would have been off Valley Road.

Just done a quick bit of maths , assuming 10,000 persons in Barnoldswick and 48 weeks of ability to get out of Barnoldswick and spend of £46m comes up at a weekly shop of £55ish.[About £110 per household ]  Does this include petrol (If I fill up in Colne ? ), shopping treats in Skipton/Settle and Mail Order/Internet shopping ?  Will tesco be 100% food , or will the computers/ clothes/ TVs/ CDs / Greetings Cards etc also be located there. Would a dual height store with restaurant be better?

Would the amount of food waste be more with a Tesco or similar type of superstore?

Overall though I cannot see what a Tesco in Barnoldswick would actually contribute to Barnoldswick , shoppers there are unlikley to venture out to sample the delights of the specialisms that are in many of the smaller shops, but I think I have previously mentioned the greater range of products that can be accomodated compared to current sized CoOp and OneStop ( affordable tuna in spring water for example - I have a very fussy cat and I have forgotten to stock up in Skipton she can act very put out at me ),

With all the evidence currently around, I would think that the greater danger is that the superstore proves unviable, as the one in Nelson town centre did, and then the town is left with an unsuitable building for manufacturing when Tesco pulls out.

The retail report would simply suggest that this new development would canabalise sales from elsewhere. So people who currently go out of town, might shop at this store instead, but all that is doing in effect is diluting the viability of those other sites and possibly endangering jobs in other areas which people from Barlick already travel to (the Sainsbury's in Colne would have the obvious impact). That is before you factor in any fall out effect upon the town centre itself.

From what I can see of the unit , it would not look too difficult to convert to wholesale/ storage or light manufacturing of some sort.   I understand from watching some of the like of Dragons Den and reading up behind some successful ideas that some people with ideas need thinks like plastic moulding prototyping and short initial runs , it seems that many UK manufacturers cannot , or will not , price these as doable ( where short run means 1,000 to 10,000 units) , and so are losing out to Chinese and other non UK producers ( sourced on the likes of alibaba.com and similar ) . There does seem to be a need to invest in flexible manufacturing ( not than one wishes to have millions tied up in plant that will only get a few runs unless can virtually guarantee that any long term production of a successful product will be placed with the UK manufacturer )

Back to Tesco for a moment.

Could all those in favour of Tesco ( including if you wish Tesco themselves ) list 10 useful things that will be retailed by Tesco for a full year that cannot already be bought elsewhere in Barnoldswick.

Could all those against please list 10 useful things for sale at a retail level in Barnoldswick that you cannot buy at Tesco in Skipton or Sainsburys in Colne.
