I have just finished reading Emma's interview and I can honestly say that reading it, I felt as though I was sitting there listening to her talking!

It was so engrossing that to be honest, I felt as though I'd stumbled into a Catherine Cookson novel!

My only problem was that being a newcomer to the area, I didn't always know the location of the streets that were talked about and the changes that have since been made. Also as I read I so wanted her to veer off from fact about the weaving industry and into personal memories, but unfortunately Stanley you did a brilliant job of keeping her on track! The only time she did waver you edited it out and worse, from a female point of view you told us that what came next was personal and not relevant ... so wasnt to be included! Oh what a typical male opinion! I think you will find that female readers would very much disagree!
And yes, I know she was worried about who would hear of what she was saying .... but to dangle the carrot...... and then eat it yourself .... you should have your legs slapped!

I have to admit that your ability to keep the conversation on exactly the path you wish to take is formidable .... when it came to her describing her worry about her sisters failing memory, you attempted reassurance by saying its better than having failing health .... and when she protested saying .. No its such a worry ..... you replied with ...'Anyway back then .. did you wear a hat?' Stanley, I laughed so much I almost woke the household here!!!

Everyone should read these tapes, I started with Mrs Clark ... but I have definately been hooked and shall work my way slowly through the others ... it was a brilliant idea to do these tapes ... again I cant emphasise enough that whilst reading them you truly do feel that you are sitting in the same room as the interviewee!

Stanley, I have only one thing to add to this ... would you please take your tape recorder down to Olwyn Simpson's dad at Bancroft Farm and 'do' him! He is in his nineties I believe and with a memory as sharp as a pin. Doc is a personal friend of his and can arrange this
Im sure! .... and while your there ...... any chance of asking him what he knows about our place! :-)

At the rate Im going with lack of sleep due to this site, the day isnt far away when Stanley is going to turn up at my house with his recorder at the ready, having heard about some ancient old crone who lives here, asking the wizzened and haggard old woman who answers the door to tell him of her memories of the area!!!! It'll be the last interview you ever do Stanley!!!!

Stevie, Don't forget that when I interviewed these people it wasn't the case that I was trying to steer them away from anything not connected with weaving. You evidently haven't read Ernie on dog shit and syphilis yet! There was no editing but at times I had to protect them from themselves. Emma was on the point of digressing into a subject that was going to upset her and wherever possible I tried to stop that happening. Remember they all knew that these tapes would become public in their lifetime and I couldn't let them do anything they might regret. So what you see as 'editing' in 2004 was caring for the informant in 1978.

Another consideration to bear in mind is that we all change, mature and sometimes improve over the years. When I did these interviews I was going through a rocky period in my own life and this affects how you handle situations and perhaps makes you even more protective of your informant. I can't say how much this was a factor but I'm certain that it was operating.

As for The Simpsons, why don't you do it yourself? Doc was talking about doing it as well. If there's something like this that you want, go out and do it but read the LTP questions first, it will save you a lot of time.
