York is not just a beautiful and interesting town, it used to have a really good, low priced market, and whenever we played there, we would spend hours browsing the market for quality cheap clothes especially.
Audrey had an excellent choice in clothes and she always struck a balance between good taste and flair. I, on the otherhand, had none, so I went for bright colours, like the red corduroy jeans I bought that day.

That evening we were playing in the pub on the corner of York market, and we had played there a few times before, so we felt very comfortable about the gig. The only problem was where they put the stage 'thing'.
It was a platform about a foot high and not much larger than two desks, so you had to be carefull not to fall off, and they placed it right in front of the fire.
I can remember walking up from the audience even to this day, what Audrey was wearing, that they had said something wrong in the introduction, and having to step up nearly a foot to the stage which was infront of the roaring fire.
In fact the fire was hot enough to have put my fiddle & guitar out of tune.

As usual it was a good audience and things were going fine till about 10 mins before the break when I heard a few people snickering. I didn't mind that, but I did start to get a bit annoyed as it turned into laughter.
It was even more annoying since it was so hot with that roaring fire behind us.
Close to the end, even in the middle of the last song, people were laughing out loud, and worse still, Audrey was smiling too. I was the only one not in on this joke, and I had that dreadful feeling that they were laughing at me.
If they didn't like my music they should have left not laugh at me!

When the first half finished, I felt both angry and humiliated, with the audience and with Audrey who was also laughing at me.

"You had better go to the loo" she said.

The red Jeans had lost their dye, and in the mirror I saw that where I had wiped the sweat from my forehead with the back of my hand, I had put most of this dye onto my face. I looked like a red indian.
Of course every time I had wiped my face, I had made it redder, so I could understand the snicker growing to a laugh.

I bet the audience remembers that booking!

It's a great trait to be able to tell a story against yourself, it's what I love about this area.

Nice tale, John.

I've heard of having a red face after doing something embarrassing but that's taking it too literally!  Grrrrrr

When I saw the topic title I thought you were going to say you had a gig coming up in York - I would have popped over and I promise I wouldn't laugh at whatever colour face you were wearing  Go to Top of Page

Callunna, I bet if ever you slipped from your husbands arms to the floor, when you struck you would ring like a silver coin dropped on stone.
What a lucky man to hold a heart like yours.

John.

[Cally blushes profusely and would even have put the little embarrassed smiley here but it doesn't seem to work on my machine Embarassed

Thank you for those kind words (which are a tad wide of the mark for several reasons!!!)

Unfortunately whenever I do hit the deck the sound is more akin to a rugby changing room after losing a vital match, but we'll gloss over that...Go to Top of Page

Cally

The things that set people aside are the things that often make them feel less - to themselves.
I think you have a special gift, a special talent, and a specical person inside that makes you stand taller than most of us.
Sometimes the most courageous thing a person can do is to bare their heart.

So Stan, learn a lesson.
When I want to creep, I will show you how. When I tell the truth, recognise it.

Tell him Cally.

"a special person inside that makes you stand taller than most of us."

LOL - did you know I'm only five foot and a tealeaf, John? And Big Kev is 6' 7" (the clue's in the name).

Rest assured, though, that I can give as much stick as I take, and on here it's all a bit of fun even if we do sail close to the wind sometimes. One of my signatures used to be "Beware - Cally bites ankles".

Stanley is usually as sweet as a little puppy whenever we meet face to face. Usually.Go to Top of Page
