I've always been fascinated by the things people do in their spare time when they can do exactly what they want to do. Men and sheds are a particularly fertile field. Women tend to do their thing in the comfort of the house.

I was delighted to see Andy's picture of the clock movement he has made.

It struck me that we could perhaps start a new topic devoted to spare time skill. So Andy starts it off and my contribution is this:

It's a small steam engine made from scratch and is based on the Stuart 5A but a longer stroke. One of these will drive a 14 foot boat with steam at 250psi. By the way, we don't like to call them models, it's exactly the same construction and materials as a full size engine, just smaller. So come on out there, let's hear about what you make in your spare time. I reckon we could be in for some surprises!

Every picture tells a story.  How many worktops have 4 steam engines and a steam hammer sitting on them?  I must be mad..........

Or a good collection of box files and a metal card index box come to that.

I'm wondering if the freedom afforded by not having a woman around is nessecerily a good thing.

Con rods.....  First find any scrap shafting that you can get them out of.  I have a length of 1 1/2" bright bar but found these shaft ends as well so I'll start on them first.  I love making nice things out of scrap!

Marvellous what's hidden inside rusty bits of scrap.  Here's the first con rod marked out for initial turning.

10 am this morning, one down, three to go...

Took a diversion and cleaned a couple of centres up, another use for the T&C grinder.  All this heavy turning ropes the centre points and makes them run hot and rough.  A quick wipe over cures them.

Dinnertime and another blank knocked off.  Two bits of bright bar cut ready for the afternoon session.

Teatime and a nice step forward.  A good clean up tomorrow, some thinking about strategy and we can do a bit of milling......

I was thinking about the con rods and if anyone is designing or building an engine....  The length of the con rod isn't critical as long as the room allowed for it on the bed of the engine can accommodate it.  Newton and I used a longer con rod than Stuarts because we are used to mill engines and the usual length between the centre of the crank journal and the wrist pin in the cross head is two and a half times the stroke, in this case, 5".  The crucial thing when you're building an engine with no accurate drawings like the ones I am making is to make sure that at the top and bottom of the stroke the crosshead is missing the gland and not pulling the crosshead too far down the slide.  The crosshead and con rod don't alter the stroke or the position of the piston, this is done by adjusting the length of the piston rod and that's why I'm making the con rods first, then the crosshead and integral piston rod, leaving plenty of length on the piston rod.  Once both are installed you can get an accurate measurement and fit the piston (1/2 inch thick) so that there is 1/4" clearance at each end of the stroke.  Actually, I shall make the piston slightly thicker to cut down on clearance because this makes the engine run better.  The Stuart piston and cylinder ends are a very complicated shape but mine will be exactly like big engine practice, flat cylinder ends and flat surface on the piston.  So, the message is that a bit of variation in the con rod overall length isn't crucial but where I will take care now I know that the crank end will clear is to make sure my 5" centre on the bearings is dead accurate.  By the way, remember that when the piston rod gland is freshly packed the gland nut can poke out a fair distance, you need scope to get plenty of packing in because it makes a better seal.  Too little and people tend to tighten them too much and this wears the piston rod.  A well fitted packed gland should always have a touch of leakage on it as it is the condensate that lubricates it.

Some serious marking out and check measuring today.....

State of play at 5pm, not a lot to show because I had a problem with my milling cutter....  leaving a very rough finish.  I think I've cured it and will have a clean start tomorrow.....

This is going to sound like a very silly question, but what are you making? i gather it has something to do with 4 engines....I took Deadly for a tour round your shed after our trip to ellenroad, so that i could show him how creative you are, but we came in slap in the middle of making crankshafts, and though we trawled back through four or five pages couldn't get the bigger picture of what all this was for...sorry if you've explained it all before but could you explain it a gain so i can tell D?

Belle, here's an engine I made twenty years ago.  Steam engine that will power a 14ft boat.  I had four more sets of castings and so I am building another two like this so that makes three, one apiece for the kids, and the other two are joined together to make a big engine for me.  I'm making the con rods today......  but not a lot done as I had a lot of writing to do.

Thanks for explaining it, will show d when he gets home.......what a wonderful idea that you have made all of the parts as well as assembled them, how many people would be able to do that these days.?    It makes me rather sad to think of all the skills we are losing.

I had a lot of stuff to do this morning but this afternoon I got this far.  Only one con-rod blank to do now and then we can move forward.
