Hello Graham.  This is fantastic stuff.  Do you go down to Dewhurst Broughton born in 1808? (My GtGtGrandfather)  Around the beginning of the 1800's there seemed to be a lot of Broughton's christened and married at ghyll church, does your tree go down as far as this?  Look forward to hearing more from you.

I recently came across some notes I took about my family history from my father. There isn’t a date on the papers but I guess they must have been written in the 90’s before I started to use the internet to look for things. The papers are starting to change colour, so it is probably time I converted them into a document and printed them out again. There are some precise times and dates, so we must have been looking at a family bible or some written documents but I don’t know what has now happened to that source.

We will start with my GtGrandparents, William Broughton who married Elizabeth Demain on 25/11/1865. I have William as born 17/3/1844 and died in 1895, I have a copy of his birth certificate, born at Long Ing in the township of Barnoldswick. Elizabeth was born 8/2/1845 and died 13/2/1882 in childbirth, although I then have ??24/12/1882 as the date of death. After her death William remarried but I don’t have any dates. She was a Whittaker and I have a note that she went back to Preston after William’s death.

My father knew that Elizabeth parents were William Demain and Hannah. He made a few comments about the Demains. He said they were a Barnoldswick family and that some went across to Burnley working in textiles. He said that they patented something on a loom. One branch of the family went to Buenos Aires, he wasn’t sure if they were called Demain or it may have been a Demain girl who married, then went out. He remembers that there were two sons and one had a job as an overseas broadcaster reading in Portuguese. They used to send parcels during the war and Dad remembers going to a flat in St John’s Wood, London during the war. He said that another of the Demains was a window cleaner and had a Municipal college contract.

Dad knew that William Broughton’s parents were Dewhirst and Ann. His father always insisted that the name was spelt with and I not a U. And he felt that Dewhirst had a cousin who was a solicitor in Skipton. He knew that William was a stonemason/builder. He lost a row of houses when he put them up as a bond for another builder who disappeared. So William had to “pay up” and it was his cousin, the solicitor in Skipton, who was ruthless and demanded payment which bankrupted William.

William and Elizabeth had 8 children

1 Mary (Polly) b 11/6/1866
2 Thomas William (Tom) b 18/3/1870 4.20pm
3 Hannah b 8/5/1872 11.15am
4 Margaret b 21/6/1874 2.15am d young
5 Martha b 14/4/1876 5.30am
6 Miranda b 10/8/1878 6am d 23/4/1882
7 John Dewhirst b 21/5/1880 6.30am
8 Elizabeth b 12/2/1882 d 24/2/1882
(??13/2/1882)

From the 1881 census we know that the first 3 were born at Earby and the 4th to 7th in Barnoldswick. The family was living at Raikes Cottages in Barnoldswick
1 Mary married Christopher Holland. My notes say she was a small woman and Christopher was a marine and 6 foot 3 inch tall. One of them had the caretaker’s job at the isolation hospital. They had a son who was called Broughton (Holland), he died aged 21. After her Husband and son died Aunt Polly went into service and would often stay at Dad’s house presumably when on leave. She looked after Miss Lambert at Prospect View in Barnoldswick.

2 Tom married ?Harriet and had at least 4 children

1 John Dewhurst Broughton, who dad thought was still alive when we did this. He thought he had had a daughter called Catherine who married a Lucas, then at a later stage Harry Bracewell.

2 William George Broughton married Anne. They had one son Eric who died at the age of 21 in a motorbike accident at Christmas 1949. I remember Uncle Billy very well. They lived in the end house of East View Terrace’ looking over Butts. He was an avid tomato grower and smoked a pipe all the time. Anne was a small woman who loved her Bingo and would go locally 3 times a week. He would have been about 70 in 1970.

3 Hilda. We didn’t have a lot of information about Hilda. Dad thought she had been married more than once and her last husband was Jim Halstead

4 Doris. She had been married more than once and had a daughter, Penelope. She then married Tom Theodore and had at least one child, Ian. I remember Ian Theodore as he was at school with me so must have been born about 1954. We were not particularly close and didn’t make a big deal of our relationship (half cousins)

3 Hannah married William Broughton, who was apparently no relation and said to be part of the coach people in the area. So two Broughton’s married and when they had a son (about 1900/10), he was called Harry Broughton Broughton. His first wife was Lettie Shorrocks, the sister of Peter Shorrocks who ran the grocer’s shop in Gisburn Road, opposite and above the Catholic Church. They had Trevor, who married Jean Caswell and they had 2 daughters. Harry then married Anne and then Mollie Brothers from Leighton Buzzard. I remember Uncle Harry and Auntie Mollie very well. They lived in a house on Park St in the 60’s. Uncle Harry was very funny and droll and Auntie Mollie was very welcoming and chatty. I also remember Trevor and Jean, both probably born late 30’s and I have a feeling they moved down south.

4 Margaret was still alive when the 1881 census was performed when she was 6 and described as a scholar

5 Martha married Joseph Pearson and they had Edgar. Uncle Edgar was married to Blanche. He was my godfather, a big tall man. He had a lot of trouble with his back and had obviously been told that he should do his back exercises regularly, so he would. At a family gathering, if it was time for his exercises he would do them, then and there. Uncle Edgar and Auntie Blanche had a son called Keith who married a girl, we think, out of Nelson, but we have since lost touch.

6 Miranda is recorded in the 1881 census as a 2 year old

7 John Dewhirst Broughton, my grandfather. He was born at Raikes in Barnoldswick. He married Gertrude Howarth on 20/12/1916. They had one child, Ted, my father on 12/11/1921 4 am. They lived on Victoria Road in Earby. After his father died in 1895, John Dewhirst couldn’t get on with his stepmother so moved in with his oldest sister, Aunt Polly. In his younger years he was known as Gentleman John and wore a cape and carried a cane when he went to dances. At one stage he went to the Palace at Blackpool to be the MC. He went to the Boer War in 1900, underage with the RAMC. He sailed out 2 or 3 times. At this time he joined the St John Ambulance which he continued lifelong and my father continued an uninterrupted association with the brigade into the 1990’s.
After the Boer War John Dewhirst did some weaving and moved into lodgings with the Whitely’s who were tailors. In 1912 he went to Canada to work on the railway being built through Kicking Horse Pass. He worked as an assistant cook/dogsbody to a gang, for 12 to 18 months. Then he came back to fight in the Great War. He served in the Dover Patrol on the General Crawford. He narrowly avoided being on the Rohiller which went down on the rocks at Whitby with 3 survivors. Apparently he was up in the Lake District with his wife to be Gertrude, when the Royal Naval Volunteers from Barlick were called up; he was in the sick berth reserves. My notes say that the volunteers went to Chatham.
In 1919 he went with Churchill’s army to fight in Russia for the “white Russians against the reds”.

Gertrude was the 6th and final child of John and Mary Howarth. Mary’s father, although we don’t know the surname had the Rostron Arms at Edenfield, he was part publican, farmer and butcher. John Howarth had a sister called Jane. He died at the age of 41 in 1889/90 from silicosis; he was a stonemason. After his death Mary moved all her 6 children to Barnoldswick. Apparently they were blacklegs in a big strike in the textile industry in 1896 or it could have been 1906.

Mary and John Howarth had 6 children

1 Marietta
2 Sarah Eliza
3 Rose Ellen
4 Frank
5 John
6 Gertrude

1 Marietta married Johnson Carr and there was no offspring. My notes say that Johnson always did everything in extremes. He was a yarn merchant in Manchester. His brother, Anthony, is said to have “banked him” by undercutting him by a fraction of a pence per yard. Anthony had a daughter Rita who married Norman Petty. I remember Norman when he must have been mid 60’s in the 60’s when I was at Ermysted’s and he was on the board

2 Sarah Eliza married George Dewhurst. We don’t think there is any connection with the Dewhurst’s on the other side of the family. He moved to Barnoldswick from Helmshore or Stubbings as a tackler and part time professional footballer. I remember Uncle George and Aunt Eliza very well from the 60’s when they lived on Cobden Street. They were both well into there 80’s and very frail. Aunt Eliza was always keen to see my teeth and to compliment me on such a good set. Uncle George would walk down to meet me once a week after school when I was waiting for the bus, in front of the new church. He would buy me sweets and comics and presumably part of his reasoning was to keep an eye on a young boy of 8-10 years leaving Gisburn Road School and catching the bus down to our house in Bracewell. Uncle George and Aunt Eliza had one son John who married a Lucas. They had one daughter but unfortunately they both died in 1944, John from TB and the daughter aged 7 from meningitis.

3 Rose Ellen Howarth married Ernest Bailey and had one daughter Mary Elizabeth. She was known as Tizzy and was still alive when I made these notes. Tizzy married Kenneth Savage and had John Savage who married Susan Lund. John was or is the greengrocer in Barnoldswick and they have children

4 Frank Howarth married Hilda Edmondson. They had two children, Edward, who married and had children, and Jeannie who married Edward (Teddy) Smith and had Shirley

5 John Howarth married Mary, a District Nurse from Burnley. They had two children. Eileen worked as a nursing sister in the Duke of York Hospital at Bradford then married a amn who owned or had a connection with the paper mills at Roden – apparently after she had nursed her subsequent husband. Mary was the other daughter who married someone out Preston way

6 Gertrude who married John Dewhurst Broughton and had Ted. Gertrude was born 30/11/1885 She died in 1952. There are photos of her holding up my brother John at Bracewell Lodge where we lived which must have been 51 or 52. Apparently she was a bad asthmatic and presumably still living in Earby at the time of her death.

Look what you've kicked off Graham.  Well done, it's sharing info like this that gets the results.  Think of the number of people who log in and find goodies but don't realise that they have info that could help everyone else.  If you are reading this, register and see what you can trigger off.  Don't be shy, we are a very broad church.

Hello Graham,
I'm not sure if we have corresponded before through other forums, but the information you provided today is just what I have been looking for, for ages. It is clearly the same line that I have been persuing and the information you have will fill in a lot of the gaps in my family tree. I am fairly sure of my ancestory back to about 1740, than it gets a bit hazy back to Roger who married Ann Jackson in 1613. So I'm very excited that you have connected back to George of Rylstone which I did wonder about as he appears on familysearch. Most of my research has been back through the census's then the parish records, first on familysearch then confirmed and added to when I went to the preston Records Office and looked at the actual books.

I tried sending you a private message through the email address you provided to the site but it was bounced.  If you would like to contact me I can send you some of my research, database and writing about my family history. I would certainly like tocorrespond with you and have some more information from your research and also the sources which you used.  I had come to a full stop with my endeavours.

I am particularly interested in the children of Richard Broughton and Ann Dickinson of Barnoldswick as there is a Richard Broughton Sen and a Richard Broughton Jun around at the same time and their offspring overlap which makes life difficult.  The parish records are difficult to interpret as jun looks very much like sen in some of the entries.

I don't know if you have any details about their children's offspring which would bring me down to the generation where I am fairly confident about my ancestory.

My line stayed put in Barnoldswick until myself who moved to Oz, but your's seem to have made a few moves - it must have been very difficult to trace

 All the best, Nigel Broughton
