Many of you have pets, and it is possibly fairly well known that over the past thirteen years my Wife and I have rescued a number of animals. Two were posted on this site as Cats in need of a new home. These two were taken in by "Steamtractor", another member. We took two Kittens from my late Stepdaughter Christine just over twelve years ago "Jethro and Ellie" Then came "Elmo" snatched from a life of misery in Padiham, the owners of this Kitten were told. "you must have your cat neutered, or She will keep on having Kittens which you are not prepared to give the attention they require" That Cat was taken by car to the North Yorks Moors, put out and abandoned, Later to be bragged about in a local club. Elmo's twin Brother had already been taken in by Christines Mother in Law. This cat is called "Frankie" as in Sinatra, because of his blue eyes, when his owner was dying of cancer, we took him in, that now makes four. Two more came soon after,"Evie" and "Lucy" Kittens, both rescued in Barlick on Christmas Eve ten years ago. During all of this we gave succour to visitng cats at our home and one very old Black and White "Sylvester" had is home outside in a purpose built shelter. Whatever scraps and unwanted food were always put outside for the Hedgehogs at night and one evening after dinner, my wife took some bits of steak out for Sylvester whom we thought was sat under the front of my van, but it was not he, and we never saw him again. This little chap was "Bobbie" almost identical, but much younger. He eventually moved in, a right little character. One summer night when we had got fed up with the crackheads who used to frequent Fernbank Mill carpark at night, my Wife who had tired of the abuse, fired up and went off to "Have a go" Bobbie was right there with her, it worked out at ten of them and two of us and a small cat, the enemy fled. About this time a dark shadow would appear at night looking for food, a beautiful little round Tabby whom we now call "Molly" here beside me right now. This now makes eight, finally to be joined by "Katie" the Mother of our two original cats. Katie died two years ago, just coughed quietly and went to sleep. The strange thing about this is that all of these cats apart from Elmo had been neutered, someone had cared enough to do that. So why not look after them. The sadness is that "Bobby" had to be put to sleep this afternoon after developing a masive tumour in his stomach. Of all the cats that I have known, he was the tops, a good pal. The frightening part of all this is knowing that this will happen again and again and my only wish is to be here when it does. Many older people have pets, they are always there, warm friendly and reliable. Vets fees are very high, unless you are on benefits. and I feel true sympathy for those who have a beloved pet but are afraid of the cost. Bobby is at peace now, no more pain, for my pain I have Rum. To all of you who have pets, look after them, keep them safe, and do not let them wander. Good night little Bobby.

How sad...

I was interested to pick up that vet fees are cheaper for those on benifits (?) Wow....I am almost certain we don't have that here.
When our darling dog got Diabetes, it cost me an arm and a leg to get her Insulin and needles/syringes every week. After we had her put to sleep (after struggling with the Diabetes for a year and her going quite blind), our vet surgery got this lovely big neon sign erected out the front of their premises. Every time I drive past I feel I paid for that lousy sign!

Sorry to hear about Bobby, Thomo. We lost a much loved old chap this year too. Much weeping and sadness, but then another cat or kitten turns up to fill the empty place...always a totally different character.
It just cost  us over £70 to have our latest  (female) kitten neutered, and that's after turning down the pre-op blood tests that the vets recommend.

Thank you all. At this time last year it cost us £220 for old Jethro to have a tooth removed completely wipeing out the winter fuel allowance. The cheaper treatment mentioned avove is actually free from the PDSA or can be part funded by the RSPCA or Cats Protection League, but you have to be on benefits and being on a pension does not count. It does make you wonder how many animals owned by older people, suffer as a result of the costs incurred by a visit to the Vets. Pet insurance often only covers animals up to a certain age prior to which it can be safely assumed that they would normally be healthy.

Last week one of our farm cats went missing, we  found her two days later with a mess of a leg. We rang our vet but was put through to the emergency vet which is where we went. She stayed at vets overnight sat, she'd a broken leg and various cuts to it. The vet said he could see tiny marks akin to a trap. We think she had been caught in one but someone had let her go. Anyway he couldn't put a plate in it so he put her a splint on. We took her home sunday after paying £471, she got the splint off twice so we went back and the vet put it on again. Tuesday evening she wasn't right so we took her to our own vet who took the leg off. We left her there till yesterday, paid another bill of £191 and brought her home. She is now on three legs and coping really well but has to stay in the dog cage for 10 days---all good fun for a farm cat.

Sorry to hear of your loss.

I had never had a pet before until 16 years ago when we found 2 dirty, flea ridden, starving waifs who had been abandoned like rubbish [and we heard that it was along with their 'heroic' mum - another story - and 11 siblings] to surely die on a 40 degree day [Australian summer].  They were brothers so different but absolutely wonderful boys - Quimby and Homer.  We lost Homer early this year and then shortly after Quimby as well.  The house has never been the same.

Very true, and some wear the ill treatment of animals like a badge of honour. Cats in particular suffer the attentions of these morons. There is a popular myth that cats should be put out at night, I have never subscribed to this, and in busy urban areas they should only be allowed out under close supervision.

Sorry to hear about Bobby Thomo, he looks quite a character in his photo, (a bit of devilment in his eyes). We have had cats in the house as long as we have been married, all rogues and vagabonds, each one unique in it's own way. Always sad when you loose a friend.

Thanks Ian, actually the Devil of that pair is Evie, our smallest cat, afraid of nowt and takes great delight in beating up the much larger Toms, but then again, she did come from Town Head where years ago even the Police went in pairs.

Bobby looks like quite a character...something about that 'so-what-are-you-looking-at' face.  The other one is doing a great job of looking like butter wouldn't melt in her mouth. Nice looking cats...
