Hi there have been away a long time after life got in the way.   Some knowledgeable person mentioned a long time ago that the James STANSFIELD I was looking for could be the son of  George PICKUP and Emma STANSFIELD .  This I have found to be correct.
He married Mary Jane TAYLOR and they had a child Maggie and lived at Whitty croft farm Barrowford.  Does anyone know this family?  if there were other children and anything about the fate of this farm? as it no longer exits,  please.

Lyne, interesting name, the bloke that built Blacko Tower was called Jonathan Stansfield, I think he was a grocer by trade, but lived somewhere up in Blacko village. He is said to have built Blacko Tower (Stansfield's Tower) in 1890 so that he survey the surrounding land which he owned. However, the folly tower ended up not being tall enough for him to view what he wanted. There is more info on OGFB somewhere else, I think.

Lyne , Barrowford , or Higherford ?......In 50's I lived a couple of hundred yards up Gisburn Road from Dicky Nook , just past Whittycroft Avenue....We used to play in the fields between Gisburn Rd and Barnoldswick Road.....and there WAS a farm. I checked on Google Maps today and it looks like the whole area has been built over , but there IS a large building just about where the farmhouse would have stood.......

Does anyone local have any more information for Lyne ?

Something nags at the back of my mind about Stone Croft or a similar name. Christine Bradley at Colne Library would be a good person to ask.

Looking at some large scale maps on the Mario website, the old farm buildings in the middle of the modern housing are called Whittycroft House and Whittycroft Cottage.

Wendy thanks very much for your offer sorry I didn’t get back soon enough to accept it, I have been unwell and had one thing after another as is the state of old age. Silly that I didn’t post the dates.James STANSFIELD b.1884 Blacko out of wedlock so he went under his mother’s name (to George Pickup b 1859 and Emma Stansfield b 1864 to James Stansfield b1821 Barrowford and Lydia Butler bef 1823 Barrowford) married 1908 St. Thomas Barrowford to Mary Jane TAYLOR b 1883 Waddington ( to Henry Taylor b1855 and Mary Altham b 1858)
James and Mary's daughter Maggie STANSFIELD (and that was the name she was registered under) was b. Nov 1912 Barrowford.
Mary Jane TAYLOR and James STANSFIELD are on the 1911 census at Whitty Croft farm Barrowford with Mary Jane's parents.

I had a quick look in the library Lyne, but all I found was that the Taylor family were at Whitty Croft Farm in the 1891 census.
Richard Taylor 27 Gas House labourer.
Margaret Ann, wife, 23.
Mary Jane 4
Frank 1

Would it be worth contacting the present owners of Whitty Croft House to see if they have any information in their deeds?
I have been researching the history of the farm where I live, which is made easier because all the deeds of properties in Yorkshire have been recorded at the registry of deeds in Wakefield. I dont think there is anything similar in Lancashire.
One thing I have found through my own research of this area is that the farms were always tenanted right up till the late nineteen forties or early fifties when the value of land ownership became less.
