As a newcomer to OGFB I was idly looking through back threads on the forum and was surprised to see the number of marine related postings - especially about such subjects as Columba/Hebridean Princess and also Trinity House as I have had a bit to do with both.

I am also an ex seafarer but I preferred to keep my fingernails clean so I worked in the nerve centre of the ship rather than in the noisy part! Am now retired and living in Brough although I was born in Thornton in Craven many years ago. I keep my hand in now with an interest in canal boating - I have a couple of shares in a 58ft nb based on the Shropshire Union.

Cheers

Howard Anguish

A post of mine has gone AWOL.  I asked Howard if his surname was Anguish as it's most unusual.

Yes, my surname is Anguish - strange I agree but I hope it doesn,t describe me. My father was in the police force and at every police station he worked at there was always a Payne on the strength!

My claim to fame is that on one ship I worked on there was me and a chap called David Grief - not a happy ship.

Fantastic Howard. welcome to the site. Nothing to do with ships but my mum used to know a girl called Bunny, she maried a bloke called Burrows... Bunny Burrows. My woodwork teacher was called Albert Hall, nice bloke, we used to call him Royal Albert.

Payne, Anguish and Grief, you don't know anyone called Misery do you?

Do you know the origin of your name?

Hello Ian,

No real idea of origins but but we think either Scottish or even more likely France.

Never met anyone called Misery but I once went to Canada to have a meeting regarding a dipute over a large, unpaid invoice. My opponent was a chap called Roger Argument!.

Another apt name I have come across isa chap who lectures on Maritime matters at a nautical college in Newfoundland. His name is Denniss Drown.

Sorry, enough already!

Howard

From the Oxford Dictionary of surnames:  Margaret Anguisshe 1530.  Erl of Anguyshe 1563, Bardsey.  Thought to be a corruption of Angus.  Andrew Anguis 1573.

Yes, I too have those references. Also an Admiral Anguish and a number o instances of the name in East Anglia but no real connections. One day I must really get down to a geanealogy search.

I thought It might be French Howard, I believe my lot came over with William as well. Topics do tend to go off at a tangent sometimes. To help get the topic back on track here's a place in a town with a fine seafaring tradition, Whitby. you could have used this spot for your negotiations Howard!

Stanley, what's betting Gloria has some input to give?

Ian

Love this shot, and the porthole/spyhole in the front door as well! There must be a story here, anyone know it?

Found this Malcolm

. . . Arguments Yard

Unlike the name suggests, it's not a place to meet for a quarrel!
It is named after Thomas Argument who built a cottage on Church Street
with its back garden running down to the harbourside
To raise some more income he built five more cottages in the garden area which he then rented out.

From the following website:

http://www.nymcam.co.uk/030901.htm

Wonder if he was a relative of Howards adversary?
