Vertical strokes! . I do that with oils but with watercolour I have always done horizontal strokes. I don't have decentpaints and brushes here in France to give it a go but will try when I get home

Same here, Sue, have always worked horizontaly but the effect achieved with the vertical stroke seems to give a "glassy" still effect to the water.

Nice one Blokeman ! it looks fresh and l like the limited colours. I am tempted to have a go but will have to do a bit of planning first.

Robin, I didn't like the photograph - the reflection of the white curve was too harsh for me - but I do like your painting!

Thanks Flutterby / Tiz, realised after I had finished that I hadn't introduced the white reflection from the bridge, but thought it looked fairly balanced so not to worry.
I think it is too easy to try and include everything in a scene but can end up looking fussy and contrived, all part of the learning curve...

Potentially one of the best bargains I have come across. Hobbycraft stores and online are selling 12, 14ml tubes of Windsor and Newton Artist quality paints at £7.49.. These normally retail at £9.00 + per tube !!!

That is a good deal, Nolic, I have just bought some oil paints, certainly a lot more expensive than watercolours and don't go as far.

We are now up to 4 inches of snow , so I decided to get my paints out and do the canal bridge. I did it first on cheap paper with the intentions of just practicing , but I am quite pleased with this first attempt . I tried the down strokes for the water

Nice one, Sue, love the stonewok on the bridge...
Just been painting with oils this afternoon, how do you keep the paint workable on the pallette when you finish for the day.??
I have been putting it in a carrier bag but is very messy!
Failing that it seems to be a case of just using very small amounts of paint and keep topping up, any ideas..

I was told to cover the paint in clingfilm and even put it in the freezer. I have never done it.
This afternoon I have also done apencil drawing of the bridge. I dowloaded it to the site but didn't catch its URL to import it here. I have never done a pencil drawing before. I have bought some drawing DVDs and some books this Christmas
It isn't here that's for sure!!

Found this info on the web about storing oils in between use. It supports what I suggested
