As you may know the new Rainhall Centre is due to open on the 13 July.  Within the building there is going to be a community cinema facility.  I am a member of the group of local people who are working to get the cinema off the ground and we would be interested to hear from locals and visitors with their ideas, comments and suggestions regarding local cinema provision.

We'd specifically like to hear from anyone interested in becoming involved, or who just have ideas for films they'd like to see. We are hoping it will run along similar lines to the Clitheroe "Stage and Screen".

I think it's a very worthwhile idea and I hope it's a great success.

I'm not much of a cinema goer (or DVD watcher for that matter) but of course many people are. You'll never please all the people all the time but at least you're asking - thank you!Go to Top of Page

Yes i hope the whole project is a success, but is this not what the civic hall on station road was all about ? quite honestly the need for two civic halls by any other name, within a hundred yards of each other is beyond me, or am i just  being short sighted.......

I wish the cinema well but am doubtful about the prospects of getting people to go to see films they can get in their front room.  To me the whole point of a community resource is that it should be just that and in order to get there the people running it will have to be flexible and experiment with different services and enterprises until they find the right mix.

Go for it Debs! What kind of films do they show in Clitheroe? One of our friends bought the tiny local cinema in a remote Scottish town when it  closed...and everyone thought he was mad as it had closed due to lack of patronage, but with careful manging he had the place up and running and the last I heard it was doing very well!

Thanks for replies, this is exactly what i hoped for some debate and to stimulate ideas and suggestions.  I know from personal experience of trying to book a venue in Barnoldswick for a range of things i have wanted to do that the Civic Hall is a well used community resource, however, i think the purpose of the Rainhall Centre will be to support, amongst other things, increased economic development in the area,  i.e. business start up, a range of training, events and information base.  The community cinema would be just one area for exploration - i take on board comments re DVD and watching at home but for some people the community cinema could be an accessible affordable way to combat isolation or to encourage community cohesion - we can only see.  It works well in other places, so much so that in Clitheroe there is a film club who show a different film every Sunday - often thought provoking stuff that one might not get to see at the mulitplex or from the dvd hire shop  ~  and i for one am interested in seeing how it develops.

It sounds very interesting, Doodah. I would go to see unusual films. I'm not sure my tastes would draw a crowd, but if you put on the 1930s version of "All Quiet On The Western Front" I'd be there in the front row.

I don't think the Civic Hall and Rainhall Road will duplicate each other's roles. When we were organising the folk festival a few years back, we wanted to use the Civic Hall, but couldn't because it was booked for old time dancing. There was no other suitable venue in town - it ended up above the Con Club but there's no disabled access and no real ale bar.

I think they've done a great job so far at Rainhall Road - just what the town needs. I suggested they make sure it has a wi fi hot spot so that visitors can get easy Internet access.Go to Top of Page

For me it would be Penda's Fen.  We once tracked it down here on the site and found it was still available.

Perhaps local schools or adult education schemes might be worth approaching in regard to using the cinema to watch adaptations of works they are studying in Eng Lit or perhaps films relating to history topics etc.

At my old school they used to have to rent in all the kit to accommodate that sort of thing and I am sure it was costly.

Interactive white boards and dvds in school arent nearly as appealing to kids as getting out of the classroom and doing something a bit novel like going to a local cinema!  I imagine we will be working in partnership with local festivals, schools and comm ed to minimise duplication, and maximise numbers.   I will make a running note of all films suggested and i think those mentioned so far would be a good start - although ive not heard of Penda's Fen - is it a classic?

Will keep you all informed.

I totally agree with you Doodah, the kids would love it, it's just the logistics of moving 28 of them out of the classroom along with a 15 page risk assessment and an army of responsible adults to look after them.........

No i haven't heard of that either, what's it about Stanley? Are they thinking of doing foreign films, some of the French ones I've seen are very thought provoking...no names come to mind though...old films, one of my favourites is "Whistle down the wind".

I think it was a Play For Today classic - like Abigail's Party, which has a life of its own in TV history these days.

Belle, Penda's Fen was a BBC TV film about a young lad and Elgar's ghost.  Brilliant, the only film I have ever seen that was repeated the due to popular demand a week after the original showing.

Sounds very interesting...would  todays producers ever expect the public to go for something like that, they dumb down everything.
