Wendy, it would have taken them a while to start on you! Jim Jackson at Crow Wood Burnley had a wry neck all his life after falling when feeding an old sow, it got ho;d of him by the neck and shoulder and he was never the same again.

Cloggy, yes, sugar beet pulp is still valuable feed especially for cattle, they love it. Brewer's grains as well.

New electric kettle arrived yesterday from Argos, my life is complete again!

The differnce between the EU politicians estimate of how much is needed to protect the Central Banks and the figure suggested by the economic analysts. The EU says $120billion, the analysts come up with figures between $300billion and $400billion. I wonder which advice the markets will base their actions on?

Breaking news is that Gaddafi has been captured, may also be dead.

What struck me was how risky it was when Cameron went public to congratulate himself in time to catch the evening news. It becomes clear that there wasn't solid evidence that the reports were accurate.  Might have been better judgement to hang fire until there was incontravertible evidence. We haven't got that even now.

One consequence of the end of Gadafi's rule might be that at last we get some definite evidence about Lockerbie. The new government will have no inhibitions about telling the truth. My bet is that we will find that people like Jim Gill and Paul Foot who believed the Libya connection was a ruse to protect the real perpetrators  could prove to have been correct. Time will tell....

Much as I like my postman, I'm afraid I won't pay that for the second class service and I will continue to use couriers

They have also made an announcement on anyone buying from overseas too:

http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageTravel_ShowContent&id=HMCE_CL_000014&propertyType=document

and of particular interest might be the drop from £18 to £15 for any object imported that will now attract duty and subsequently the surcharge from the Post office. No mention of that value though.

Free trade?

Telegraph article, see this LINK.

I did a bit of reckoning up. In 1959 I was earning £8-10-0 a week and I think a stamp cost 4d. So my wage bought 500 stamps. Someone on £200 a week now with a second class stamp costing 36p could buy 555 so the price hasn't altered much at all.  This is conservative as I think someone driving a truck seven days a week would get more than £200. So in real terms stamps are probably cheaper than they were then. Where is the problem?

Brad, not as unusual as you might think. Have a look at this LINK, Louisa May Alcott wrote a book called 'Little Men' and chapter 5 is 'Patty Pans'. Nice little read from days long gone. I came across it in a book called 'The Patchwork Book' when I was a lad and never forgot it. I have an idea the ladies would like this as well. I think I must have a good memory.......

Sorry if this is a few days out of date but I have been away...what captured my attention were the horrific photographs of Gaddafi's body splashed all over the tabloids..have we gone back to the days of hoisting our "enemies" heads on spikes outside the tower of London? I thought it most barbaric to handle any death in this way, and a real indicator that we no longer see anything as sacred.

Tinks I agree and a lot of parents in particular have been very angry at the publication of these photographs that their children could clearly see when going into shops for their sweets.

What caught my attention over the affair is the holier than though attitude that the men in suits in Europe, the USA and Libya  had over his killing. They forget that the ordinary men who fought for the liberation have had years of abuse in Gaddafi's name and put their lives at risk daily to try to topple the regime. It does not surprise me  or anger me  that one of them put a bullet through his head rather than think of bringing him to trial. It also cut off the possibility of his supporters trying to rally around a captive Gaddafi. The suits were not there and particularly those outside Libya should not criticise.   Nolic

In the process of re educating myself, came across this in the Oxford Press ' History of Great Britain' :

' the first building  in the world specificllaclly designed as a cinema was opened in Colne, Lancashire, in 1907'

Am trying to picture Colne as I knew it in the late 50's, but can't put my finger on which cinema it would have been, or where?

cheers,

cloggy

Re Gadaffi pictures in papers. Can't see why parents should be upset; given the ample supply of rubbish said children see on TV or t'internet every day.

cheers,

cloggy

Cloggy, it was the Central Hall, down Colne Lane on the right hand side.
