Great pics of John Gell, good friend of mine. Not seen each other for years, I know he's not been on this site for ages. We need to track him down before he becomes a normaly member of society, come on all you chimney watchers, find him, find him!!!!!

Bob puts his finger on a serious problem. I'm not a pub man but regret the decline, I think every pub in the country is under threat. It's the supermarkets that kill them, offers like 36 bottles of Becks for under £16 before Christmas. Crazy, how can prices like that help anyone?

Stanley ,i think the supermarkets have got the right idea, they can get people in there for cheap ale and a large percentage of them will buy something else when they are there,if pubs do any kind of promotion these days the do-gooders come down on them like a ton of bricks, plus theres the smoking ban,ive heard statistics saying the smoking ban has made no difference to the pub trade, absolute rubish.pubs have always been the heart of the community where people go for a smoke, drink and a chat(sometimes more),the do-gooders must have some kind of utopian idea that the world will be wonderful if we give up drinking and smoking,i bet these type of people dont even know who their neighbours are..

The pub landlords got irate too because Wetherspoons have started their 99p a pint offer (and full meals for about £3). One said he couldn't even get the beer (Greene King IPA I think) direct from the brewery for that price. Perhaps the government will offer pubs a bail-out like the banks and car companies!!!

It's not all ways the landlords, most are not owned freehold but are lease hold and owned by large corporations, These corporations charge the landlord rent, and extortional prices for his dray, which he legally tied to but off them. These corporations offer no help, no free of charge help to the landlords during these hard times, nor have they in the past they just keep taking the rent and seem blind that their own business is slipping away from beneath them. I think for landlords it is survial of the fittist
