I love painting and am a local amateur painter have got an N.V.Q. Level 4. I sell  locally but not recently. I work as an Art technican,  which involves  allsorts really! I think more should be done in schools as painting is a good way of helping children communicate and deal with stress, adults too !

Tom -buy some  masking fluid to leave a bit of white in your paintings, try heavier  watercolour paperpaper with a texture too, tube watercolour artists paint Windsor and Newton or Daler and Rowney. Start with primary colours. For the chimney you can paint thickly with watercolour, using three , yellow , red and blue. Then scrape off with an old credit card,or fingernail for your brickwork! I get books from the library, or off E-bay boots sales or charity shops. Terry Harrison ,does easy explanations of scraping and textures and i have been to one of his workshops!I would invest in a good sable brush too. A no 6 is a good one to start with . The Pro arte range are good and they do a sable mix brush. I wont cost the earth buying these few things.i promise you that , you will see a difference

You cant make a silk purse out of a sows ear, my mum used to say!So by using better stuff you will see what i mean!

The SAA, sells a lot of really good stuff at discount prices if you are a member, and you get a magazine with hints and lessons on how to paint particular scenes. There are also loads of books in discout bookshops for only a couple of pounds a piece , with themes like seascapes, buildings, people. You can also get videos that take you through step by step

So here goes then. Not quite originals like Tom as I was taken through them step by step in the workshop. The cockerel was my second water colour, unfortunartley a little fat. The moors above Hebden Bridge was my lates, but my scanner is broken so I have had to photgraph it. The seascape at Berwick should had figures in it but I couldn't get them right so gave up.

Lovely painting of the cock on the gate. Others are out of focus but even so are good paintings. I like your sky in the seascape. Nolic

Thank you. Yes the other too were on bigger sheets of paper and wouldn't fit on the scanner or photograph well. The cockerel however was A4 so gave a reasonable copy
