What grabbed my attention today was the radio report that the leaders of the big banks were being taken to task for their part in the problems, and had said sorry (WHAT!!!!???? Is that it?) but even more horrific was the information that "None of them had banking qualifications!"

 I am puce!

I watched this live this morning on one of the news channels.
The 'bankers' apologised for the 'downturn in events', they didn't apologise for any part they may have played in the events. I'm sorry there is a downturn!

That's like saying "I'm sorry that you are an idiot", is that an apology?  Only bankers could get away with that kind of crap.

Being one of these soft southern rich exploiters of the world (as a hydraulic engineer with cad skills but also development of electro mechanical / plc / pc based test systems) that is nearly 4 years wages to me - including overtime!

What is even worse, Godron has appointed an ex boss of HBOS as his adviser on the crisis and put him in charge of the FSA. Brilliant. I don't care about them saying sorry, I want to see someone accept blame and proper retribution, like giving the money back. They talk about Madov being the biggest con-man. Think again, we are all being conned.

The bloke was Sir James Crosby, head of HBOS when they entered the disaster of the purchase of AMRO. He is now a government adviser and deputy head of the FSA. In 2005 his head of risk management warned him that the business model they were using was dangerous so Crosby sacked him. This squares exactly with what my daughter told me about attitudes at the same time when she was constructing risk assessment programmes for a major investment bank. Talk about setting a thief to catch a thief!

Was that not RBS who bought Amro ??

Yes, it was someone from the RBS who is now advising  Lloyds.

Not only was the apology ridiculous and fallling completely short of the mark it was apparantly  an apology "if they had caused anyone hardship" not themselves, certainly!

At the quizzing the bankers kept saying things like "it's easy to be wise after the event" and "in retrospect perhaps it was wrong". I thought they were supposed to have been wise before these events! Especially on those salaries.

I'd like them to be asked how they plan to repay all the people who have lost their jobs, lost interest on their savings, lost their small business etc.

Whichever bank it was he's jumped ship. The curse of OG! Do you think someone's reading what we say?

But he still claims he didn't sack the man who warned him of the danger. It's probably down to the form of words - e.g. he had a word with the Inhuman Resources Department and they sacked the man. These bankers are good at wriggling if nothing else.

Is it me ?...or does anyone else think that there is a slight  whiff of something a bit "unsavory" about the fact that this geezer was Knighted and then appointed to the Dep. Head of the FSA  by Dolland (not  "and Aitcheson") Broon.

Only to be leant upon to go when the fertilizer got a bit close...eh ....eh ....Half an hour before P M Q s

From U-Gov:     Sir James Crosby is a Director of ITV plc and Compass Group plc, and a trustee of Cancer Research (UK). During 30 years in the financial sector, he has worked in the investment, insurance and banking businesses, most recently as Chief Executive of HBOS. He also serves on the Board of the Financial Services Authority as Deputy Chairman.

Funny thing is the FSA site comes up with 404 error.....  Handy....

The thing to recognise about this case is that it is the tiny tip of a large iceberg of nepotism and privilege. He is by no means the only inappropriate appointment. Read Private Eye, they report cases like this and their are many.

Yes, and it runs through councils as well as government - again revealed by Private Eye.
