This is a new forum for a new subject.

Local to where I live is planned a quarrying and asphalt site. Following the quarring of the sand and gravel, they (have yet to find out quite who) plan to have a landfil site for inert waste.

The thing is that it is planned to site this work on a SSSI (site of special scientific interest).

We have very little time to appeal this decision. We have found that the plnners have been working on this for 3 years and yet we get 3 weeks to appeal or make our opinion known.

I intend (if you will forgive me for using this site to my own ends) to put information regarding the local interest group upu on this site. People may read this or ignore it as they like. I would ask you to read it though; if for no other reason than that one day you may have to appeal a similar decision and you may want to follow or better some of the action that we have taken.

Please feel free to voice your opinions on our action and also we appreciate any and all comments and advice.

This morning, a fair amount of the able bodied went to the picnic area opposite the planned site, that is the picnic area that is adjacent to the Camping and Caravanning site that the new owners have invested so heavily in. Whilst we were there, one of our local long legged persons measured out positions for the protest banners which were duly erected courtesy of several more of the longer legged variety type folks. Us short ones did the protesting and most of us were photographed for the local newspaper, the Eastern Daily Press. Hopefully you should be able to find a photo of us all on their website soon. I am the short one at the back.

The first thing that I will lead you all to is a website that the village are setting up. The hope is that by 11th March 2008 there will be an e-petition that people can add their names to.

The web address is

www.hawitage.co.uk

Please let me know on this site if you have any difficulties accessing it, I will pass all messages on to those with the know how.

Thank you for reading the first string on this forum. There will be more I promise you.

Julie is this a massive extension to the existing works that can be seen on Google Earth just to the NE of Wreatham?

ok folks, I have just been to the website  www.hawitage.co.uk and it is up and running. There is a petition to the prime minister to protest about the gravel extraction and the subsequent landfill. We really would appreciate as many names on the petition as possible.

The website states a little about the area, who we are and why we object (although we all have our various reasons).

Go on, I dare you, I double dare you.

Hi there Ian.

I just had to go to Google Earth to check out.

The works you can see is a junior motocross site. It has been there for 25ish years that I know of. It probably has been a gravel pit at one time. The new gravel extraction proposal incorporates that as the lower corner of a lazy triangle and then goes further North East along the road and back down southwards.

If you are also interested, check out Grimes Graves on Google Earth. Mineral extraction by stone age method! It gives a really brilliant landscape. These are neolithic flint mines just a few miles away. Chris has put some flints up on the website www.hawitage.co.uk that he picked up on the proposed site.

Absolutely brilliant. Thank you for your kind comments and actions. I googled hawitage last night (at an ungodly hour) and the motocross chappies have got a link to the petition as well. It seems that they are grateful for the start that it gave them and have fond memories, first wins etc.

Only just picked up on this - just signed up, good luck Julie.

My brother and family lived in Norfolk for a time many years ago and I remember on one of our visits to see them, taking our young children to Grimes Graves.  It was great, they loved it particularly climbing down the mines.

Sorry this forum has been rather quiet; in the background a lot of people have been very very active and I would ask you to visit the www.hawitage.co.uk site to see the latest news and also to look at a brilliant video, the link is to u tube.

The news is certainly worth looking at and I would like to thank all of those that have helped in whatever manner.

We all have learned a lot from this little escapade, mostly though it is keep your ears and eyes open.

It certainly is. We don't know why the forestry commission recinded their appllication so quickly. We had been given extra time to prepare our case against the application, that was both a gift and at the same time we were worried about losing momentum. We had a l;ot of interested parties on our side and I think that those within the village who were responsible for organising the villages against this application did an absolutely marvelous job.

Thankyou to all on this site who added their names to the on-line petition.

Beware of negotiating ploys Julie.  They will be back witrh a modified proposal.  The intention is to get the opposition off-guard, thinking they have won.

Yup, that is our suspicion. We have to keep our eyes open for another proposal quietly sneaking its way in, like this one tried. We have a brilliant parish clerk who picked up the last application.

Whilst we have fire in our belly, we have an american vicar who doesn't want to work too hard on Sundays and wants to close our medieval church, complete with medieval wall paintings. Watch this space again.

WHAT IS UP WITH THE WORLD
