I have bought an external hard drive, and I want to copy everything from my laptop on to it. I have Windows XP Home Edition which has a Files and Settings transfer wizard on it. But, and this may be me reading it wrong, it only seems to move things as against copying them.
What I want to be able to do is once a week backup any work or e-mails onto the external hard drive--simply.
I have no doubt someone on here will know what to do, and it will be so simple.
My laptop is a Dell and came with the windows XP loaded on it. If I go down the route of start, programs, accessories, system tools----it should give me backup, but it doesn't, it has the Files and Settings transfer wizard instead.

I think you need to look at a programme called Acronis.

http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/index.htm

I know lots of people swear by it for ease of use and efficiency. I do not know if the current version will cover XP, but most of these things are backwards combatible.

It used to be possible to writea small DOS batch file to do what you want to do, but I am not sure if XP support DOS, and you would also need someone who was familiar with your system to write it.

In XP, Start - Accessories - System Tools - Back up and follow the on screen instructions should copy whatever you tell it to...

That looks as though it should have some connection with what you are trying to do.

However, knowing what M$ is lik,e it may well be something for getting boy scouts out of horses hooves.

From what I can figure out the files and systems transfer wizard is for moving all data from one computer to another, as you would do from  an old computer to a new one. What I want to do is copy everything and then just back it up once a week or so. Sorry to be so confusing but I don't know another way to explain it.

Back to Acronis then.

I must admit that I have never used it, althought I once bought it and never used it. But I do know a number of people who used to swear by it...hence my purchase.

What I do these days, since I changed to Linux, is to have two hard drives in the box and just manually make copies of important stuff on to my "non-system HD". The use of Linux seems to remove quite a number of the causes of needing back ups, and if you do have to do a fresh system install it is much less bother than the normal fresh M$ install.

Have a look in C:\WINDOWS\System32 for ntbackup.exe and double click on it.

 Don't touch anything else though...

The entry in System Tools for Backup is only a shortcut and may have been inadvertently deleted. You can recreate a shortcut and put it anywhere on your computer (for instance - the desktop) quite easily.

Navigate to the file in the location Kev gives above.

Right click  ntbackup.exe  and slide on to "Send To" and then "Desktop (create shortcut)"  from the sub-menu that opens.

This will create a shortcut on your desktop called "shortcut to ntbackup.exe", not the most elegant naming but you can rename it in the normal way if you wish.

It will be easy to find and use if you are doing regular backups.

You can create shortcuts to any file or folder using this method.

Using the right mouse button, right click on your desktop. A drop down menu will appear.

Move your mouse pointer to new. Using the left mouse button click on shortcut and a create shortcut wizard will appear.

In the  "Type the location" box type C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntbackup.exe and then click the next button.

The next box gives you the option to name your new shortcut (you can leave this as ntbackup if you want)

Click on the Finish button and you should have a new shortcut, on your desktop. Double click on it to start the back up wizard...

Personally I think you can't beat Linux for backing up a Windows system, but it is a bit geeky.  Wink

Running it from a live CD means the operating system has unhindered access to everything on the hard drive without resorting to 'shadow' copying.

Since 'C:\windows\system32' is on the default path and '.exe' is assumed if you're running it, just typing "ntbackup" and pressing enter in the run box should work. A lot easier to get right.........

It won't wear that Pluggy. I have been into system32 and there is a reinstallbackups I presume that is what I am looking for, when I go into it there are 14 separate files and I don't want to mess with those if I'm not sure just what to do.
