Hello all !
it might sound strange, but I hope you'ld be able to help me.
I have small wooden sign (22X4")- that was pick-up from one of the abandoned British Camps in Palestin (Israel) in 1948, by young Israelian soldier - my grandfather. I don't know where the camp was, and unfortunaly he died many years ago.
That's the reason I need your help!
the sign says (in 2 lines): 1. "MAJOR J.W.DARNELL" 2. "OFFICER I/C WKSPS"
Do you know that means? what was his duty? does this sign worth something to someone?
ANY information/ideas you can offer would be appreciated.
Thanks-
Hila

I thought that "WKSPS" might stand for "workshop" ...
do you know if the Army have archive - where I might be able to find info about that person?
Thanks for your help |

Second line is 'Officer in charge workshops. If that's Darnell then he was almost certainly REME or RAOC. If you go digging on Google looking for army muster rolls you should be able to find him.

I'm digging few hours now- and nothing significant yet... (not even with the british army muster rolls...)
can you, please, explain what "REME or RAOC" mean?
(sorry- I have NO military background- only one wooden sign...)

Hi all !
I wish to thank you for your great help & interest!
enclosed please find the response I've got from the British National Army Museum:
Major J W Darnell had first been commissioned as a lieutenant on 29 April
1942, had been made a war substantive captain on 11 Feb 1944 and a temporary
major on 27 Oct 1945. He served with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical
Engineers and therefore the abbreviation on your sign stands for 'Officer in
Command Workshops'.
I regret that I have no further information about Darnell. He wasn't a
regular and his service record remains unreleased by the Ministry of Defence
for confidentiality reasons for 75 years.
Yours sincerely
Alastair Massie
National Army Museum
Thanks again-
(at least- that sign has a "face" now...)

Ask yourself why they have sealed his records for 75 years. Could be national security. Was he a spook?
