Hello my name is Colin Brittain, author of "Into The Maelstrom" The Wreck of the Rohilla. I was encouraged to post to this website by another keen member (H. Sheldrick) if I ever had any queries about Barlick members involved in the loss of the hospital vessel. I do hope that this post is within the correct topic title and apologise if not (perhaps the administrator could move it if not?).

I have recently acquired a high resolution scan taken from a postcard. The people featured are a mix of Whitby / Barnoldswick and I am trying to do my best to name those on the photograph. Of course as the author I should have ready access to additional photographs that may help and I have managed to name a few. I have posted this here to see if any existing members may have some clue as to who the personnel are. I believe the photograph was captured at one of the Rohilla's anniversary.  I am sorry the image is missing as I have not yet cracked the way of ading an image, I will of course update this post when I have.

Finally if anyone has a query of their own for me about the Rohilla I would be happy to receive them. My passion for the tragic story is a s strong today as when I wrote my book if not stronger. In closing I would just like to add what a very comprehensive website this is.

My Regards

Well, after threatening to do it for several years, Bernulf (Heather Sheldrick & Elaine Rose) finally got around to re-recording "The Wreck of the Rohilla".

We've done alternative versions. The original, which is over 8 minutes long, includes the roll call. Then, thinking maybe 8 minutes would be too long for radio, we chopped out the 3rd verse & chorus, and cut out the roll call to make it just over 5 minutes.

This is the full version, in case anyone fancies a listen. If your computer speakers are anything like mine you'll find it sounds a whole lot better through headphones.

If I am not mistaken, somebody here in Barlick is the custodian of the Ships Wheel from the Rohilla and that a member of his family was lost in the tradgedy.

I think Colin Brittain might be able to answer that one, Peter.

I understand he's been doing some further research and might be visiting OG to update us all soon.

He's been very busy lately - one of the new episodes of "Coast" is featuring Whitby and the Rohilla disaster so he's been interviewed and consulted by BBC researchers.

Meantime, here's the cover of our CD single, image courtesy of Colin:

Last night we watched a documentary film about the forming and work of the RNLI. There was a short piece of footage about the Rohilla, also I have my Fathers copy of The War Dead of Craven somewhere and I believe that there is s section devoted to the disaster. I will dig it out.

Found the book. It gives the names and addresses of the survivors and victims from Barlick, also family status, there are also photographs of twelve of the male victims. My scanner is off line at present, I will post the pictures etc when re-connected, is this of any use? One of the names is linked to he who may be custodian of the wheel.

What happened at Whitby was possibly the largest loss of life from Barlick in a single day. A good many years ago I went through the book to try and see which streets were worst affected by the loss of life in the war. Bolland St headed the list with Denton St a close second. In one family on Rainhall Rd, three brothers were lost in a single day, and all in different places.

Thanks for posting the images, Peter.

A copy of the song has gone off to the Beeb in the hope that they'll use a snippet in the forthcoming programme. Fingers crossed.

And thanks for the fascinating info about the streets which suffered the greatest losses in WWI. Yet another reminder of how fragile life is. My grandfather served in WWI and lived on Bolland Street. A bullet just a few inches to the left and I wouldn't be typing this now...Go to Top of Page

hi Guys,

Callunna prompted me to this thread and the wonderful news that she has gotten round to recording a new version of the etherel Rohilla song.

Thomo you are almost right with regards to the ships wheel and it is a little bizarre in that it is a topic I have recently been working on myself, I therefore hope the following helps which I came across as a rather faded photocopy sheet and a photograph from the Middlesbrough Evening Gazette, dated September 21 1973 that is not very clear;

Rohilla Wheel Presented To Lifeboat Museum

The wheel from the hospital ship Rohilla has been returned home to Whitby for permanent exhibition in the West Pier lifeboat museum.

It was presented to the museum last Thursday by the owner for the past 20 years. Mr. Norman Pickles of Chapel Street, Barnoldswick.

Mr Pickles father, Mr. Thomas Pickles was one of the 84 lost in the disaster, and his uncle, Mr. Fred Riddiough, who died about five years ago, one of the survivors.

After the loss of the Rohilla off Saltwick Nab in October, 1914 the wheel was in the possession of a Whitby butcher, Mr. Fred Clough, a member and subsequently chairman of the Urban Council.

It went to Mr. Pickles on the death of Coun Clough’s daughter, Mrs. Amy Parratt.

Mr. Pickles travelled to Whitby, specially to make the presentation and spent several days in the town. He was accompanied by members of his family, including his eldest son.

The wheel was received on behalf of the Whitby lifeboat museum by the chairman of the Whitby branch RNLI. Mr.  Allan Marshall.

Present at the ceremony were the new Mayor of Whitby and Chairman of the Urban Council, Cpoun. G. V. Butt, and Mrs. Butt, together with Capt. David Stevenson, harbourmaster and R.N.L.I. deputy launching authority and branch committee members Commodore J. P. Dobson and Messrs. R. Harland, L. M. Simpson and W. Walker.

The only wording on the wheel is “Brow’s Patent Telemotor Rosebank Ironworks, Edingburgh.

The reason I was working on this particular topic was another sheet from the same paper in which another ships wheel identical to the Rohilla one was in his possession, unfortunately though I have not been able to find out any other information.

I was intrigued to read that you had watched a documentary film about about the forming and work of the RNLI that had a short piece about the Rohilla and wondered if by any chance you had managed to record it?

As Callunna mentioned  I have just finished workiing with the BBC and the team from the Coast series. it all began with an e-mail in April from a BBC researcher and seemed at times unstoppable. I am now left processing the many (many) photographs I captured over the two days filming. It is expected to air early next year and will do my best to list the relevant airing details.

Hope this all helps,

Colin
