Hello hello!
I really don´t know wether its the right topic - I hope so :) - as I already told you in my introduction thread, I am going to move to Barlick! - 9 days left ;)
Last week I visited Barlick and I saw my flat for the first time - its simply beautyiful, not to big, not to small - perfect for me :) . But theres also a catch - the water pipe in the kitchen is blocked - at least I think so.
England is a new country for me and so I thought that I should ask first before I hire any random person. Where do I find the cheapest offer? Internet?Yellow Pages?A special black board?
I am grateful for every answer :)
Thanks!

Hello Mara, Is it bocked or perhaps frozen? there is a product that can be bought to clear blocked pipes. You can buy this at Shambles on Albert road on the town square. It should be easy to clear if it is blocked at the " U" bend of the drain, do you not know anyone in Barlick to have a look before you start employing plumbers etc..

Mara, do you mean the waste outlet pipe (i.e. the pipe that drains water from the kitchen sink) or one of the pipes leading to the taps on the sink?

If it's the waste pipe (Most likely in this weather and in a flat that's been empty for a while) it will be frozen water most likely in the 'U' bend under the sink. Open the door, let air circulate and give it a day, use the WC for waste water disposal. Actually it's a matter for the landlord or agent if it is a rented flat.

Hey!
Thanks for yur replies! I didnt had the time to look around for the cause but I dont think that its frozen - I have already noticed the problem when I visited the apartment more than two weeks ago and if I remember it rightly we had more than zero degrees at the time.
Yeah its the waste pipe - maybe it was frozen, I dont know, but I dont want to count on it. 5 days left (hurray :) ) and it would be nice when I would be able to use my tap :) .
I saw an ad in the TV when I was in the UK from a "company" called www.myhammer.co.uk - anyone heard about it before? I used already google and found a few more pages that had a similar offer. What do you think about it? Or will be a local handyman the better decision?
Thanks for you help :) !

Mara,
As Stanley said, it is the responsibility of the landlord - directly if they do not employ a managing agent, otherwise the managing agent.
This information should be in your contract.
Don't employ someone yourself if your property is rented - a) why should you pay for something which is not your responsibility and b) if anything goes wrong, you may end up having to cover the cost of any repairs or replacements for that gone wrong thing aswell.
I hope you enjoy yourself in Barlick, but please do try to take the time to go over the border into Yorkshire - there is some amazing scenery and Skipton always used to be a great market town although I am not so sure now.
If you find the time, you might want to think about exploring getting an inter rail pass http://www.interrailnet.com/interrail-railway-great-britain
I haven't looked too deeply at the website - it just occured to me it might be something to help you get as much out of your stay as possible.

Anni!!!! I'm surprised by you!!! Barlick is in Yorkshire! County Brook is the boundary and even the government has admitted that now.
Mara, Anni is right, the landlord or their agent has a statutory duty to provide accommodation which is fit for purpose. Defective plumbing is actually an offence and can be enforced by the Council. Ask when gas heating was last serviced as well, it has to be cerified safe by a registered gas-fitter once a year. Tenants have rights, don't be afraid to assert yourself. Look at it this way, if they can't get it right for a new tenant they aren't going to get any better and you'll have problems all the time you are in there. You are not a supplicant, you are paying good money for a service.
On rail passes, one thing I found with my US students was that deals on rail passes are cheaper in the country of origin than they are here. Mind you, with the demise of British Railways this may have changed. Worth looking into.

Hey!
Ah okay thanks people! Its similar here - its the responsibility of the landlord. But I did not know how the thing looks like in England. I´ll give hin a call today and ask him what to do - mmaybe he can fix it until I move in :) Nevertheless I made an ad for a plumber on the page. You never know ;) And I can still cancel it ...
@Anni
That sounds nice!My familiy and my boyfriend wants to visit me as soon as possible - maybe this will be the possibility to visit some other towns :) . I am still a little bit afraid of using the train - don´t know. I am able to sleep so well in trains, that I'm always afraid to oversleepthe next stop . But I would travel together with other people (that can wake me up :D ) .

So many places of interest within a small radius that you will be hard pressed to decide priorities, I would certainly suggest that you consider YORK as a priority, worth at least an overnight stay so much to see. Train from Skipton is reasonable booked on line in advance, accom. can vary from comfortable pubs to hotels from 25GBP per person (5 Lions). Close by Barlick Skipton is nice for a day trip and easy on bus, and a trip to Howarth, and on and on.
cheers, enjoy Barlick

The one thing missing from the newcomer to Barlick, and requested earlier, internship in/at what??? Can't keep this a secret since the folks have tried to "fix" the leaky pipe etc etc.
