I am seeking clues as the whereabouts of family of Emmanuel Clegg, and his sisters, Sarah Ellen and Catherine (Kate), who lived in the early decades of the last century at an address that I thought was Baynehall Rd in Barnoldswick, but I now think must have been Rainhall Road. Emmanuel Clegg, born around 1876, married at Skipton in June 1900 to Agnes Phelan and moved to live initially wth Agnes's brother at 8 Shaw Terrace in Barnoldswick. Agnes' brother, John D. Phelan, is described in the census of 1901 as a 'professor of music'. One of Emmanuel's sisters, possibly Kate, probably married and became Mrs Brooks, but that is not certain. The family originated in the Bury/Rochdale area. Atleast at one stage they ran a bakery in Barnoldswick, perhaps a quite substantial one, also making cakes etc. I am descended from Mary Ann Clegg, a half-sister of Emmanuel, Sarah and Ellen, who moved to Australia long ago but kept, through her family, some contact with Barnoldswick until around the Second World War, which is of course already nearly 60 years ago. It seems to me at least possible that Emmanuel Clegg's children might have continued to live in the district, or that, through the "bakery" detail, somebody might be able to help with this. Any descendents of Emmanuel, Sarah, or Catherine Clegg would share a common gt gt grandfather, William Clegg, with me. So that is my query.
Hoping that Barnoldswick is flourishing. Gavan McCormack
ps. I mostly live in Australia, but as it happens am writing from a Japanese email address since I am currently working in Japan.

CLEGG FAMILY
No Cleggs in Barlick in 1841, 1881 or 1891 census.
The only Emanuel Clegg I could find in the 1881 census that looks like a match is this one, his birthplace is recorded as Bury.

Many thanks Stanley. That is very helpful. Cleggs did not move to Barlick (from Bury/Rochdale)till 1900, following Emmanuel's marriage to Agnes Phelan, so no appearance in earlier censuses is no surprise. (Actually, I have Emmanuel, then aged 16, with his sisters Sarah Ellen and Caroline (21 and 17) and father William (67), at 3 India St Tottingham (or Tottington?) in Lancs for the 1891 census.) However, Emmanuel, confectioner, of 18 Rainhall Rd (1922), and Alfred and Mrs Caroline Clegg with dairy at 20 Rainhall Rd (1911, 1914 and 1922) are certainly the family I seek. I wonder if anyone knows any more about them, especially what happened to them after 1922.... gavan mccormack

Why doesn't the poster of this message log on and do a search via the home page? The name Clegg rings a bell with me from when I was at Ellenroad. There may be stuff in the archive that I didn't index as it wasn't directly associated with Barlick. A call to Local Studies at Rochdale Library would be a good idea.

The Clegg's were falling over each other when I was at Milnrow (1951-58) and there wasn't a lack of them in Rochdale either

There was a Cleggs bread, pies and cakes shop in Earby in the 1930s-to late 1940s ,next door to Varleys butchers on Victoria Road ,They baked all the stuff in Barlick and it was brought to the Earby shop and they had a shop in Barlick too I believe .

I think the Emmanuel Clegg that was nagging me was one of the original promoters of the Ellenroad Mill.
Sid, welcome and thanks for the offer. Someone may pick up the reference and come back to us.
