has Springfield been established a long time? Was it the only primary school in Earby in the 40s and 50s?

That's an interesting question and I don't have an exact answer. I've always assumed it was a post war school but I'm sure one of the Earbyers will come up with a better answer. "Harrison Brothers was a small haulage firm operating from Smearber Farm, Elslack and was owned by two brothers, Jack and Billy Harrison. Jack lived at the farm with his wife Corinne who taught at Springfield School Earby" [from SG Memoir. this was in the late 1950s]

I thought Sprigfield was quite a recent (mid 60's )school that took over from New Road School. Alder Hill was the other school near the cemetary but that closed as asecondary school in the early 60's. Nolic

Sorry Nolic..please don't take this personally, but I had a chuckle when I read your reply referring to the '60's as being 'recently'... .It must be an 'age thing' , I find myself doing the same thing for eg 'It was only the 70's or 80's , gosh it wasn't that long ago" or "I feel like I've just bought that, and now it needs replacing" or 'Oh, I love this song'......forgetting it 's decades old...(nothing wrong with that ofcourse) or 'Why can't I find 'so and so' in the shops' .... reply - Mum they don't make it anymore!! Or if you see a pic or article of a celeb who you haven't heard about 'for ages' .."Gosh, they've aged haven't they", forgetting their time was 20/30 yrs ago.
At least we are still young at heart.....That has to mean something....eh?

Cazza, know exactly what you mean. I've had the inverse things from my kids like comments that the Spice Girls were ancient etc. Gundred once asked if everything was in black and white when I was a nipper - it seemed perfectly natural to her that it should be.
I think its to do with how old you are in your head - I've never got past aout 21 or 22 . I sometimes see my self as a demented old codger picking up a bass guitar and doing the bass lines to "Sunshine of Your Love" to entertain the other residents in the home.

Alder Hill School a primary school until fairly recently my sister taught there in the 80's and I think it closed in the 90's sometime.

Hi, just come across the forum.
I went to Springfield (the old school that was demolished - not the new one build "recently") from 1962 to 1965 and to Alder Hill (again demolished recently - about 10 years ago I think) from 65 to 69.
I have fond memories of rolling huge snowballs in the Springfield playground in the great winter of 1963.

Springfield was there in the early fifties - my friend lived on Springfield Avenue. New Road school was the other primary school.. Children from both plus Kelbrook Primary went on to Alderhill Secondary School unless they passed the scholarship (11 plus) to go to Skipton Ermysteads or Girls' High School. Later they went to 'Barlick Modern'

You're about right moh. New Road (Miss Rushton in my time, around 1930) was Earby's primary school until Springfield was built (I think sometime between 1945 and 1950)

Probably built to cope with the 'baby boom' after the war

Only thing I can remember connected with Springfield is when Corrine tore her hamstring whist dancing with the kids. 'Being a tree'. I told her that God was trying to tell her something!
