Anyone using the roundabout at our end of the M65 or the imediate area cannot fail to have noticed the scale of the development on the Bunkers Hill site adjacent to Vivary Way. This is of course the New Flagship Boundary Mill , I have been following the progress of the work with a great deal of interest as my Wife is an emloyee of one of the concessions within the store. So here by way of a matter of interest is a description of what will be as we understand it. This is based on sighting of the plans and information given out at staff meetings. The main entrance to the new store will be the one on the aforementioned roundabout, with a secondary pedestrian access close to Colne Raiway Station, below Primet Bridge on the right, possibly at the end of Leach Street. The group of buildings by the main entrance are the new restaurant complex, this is built on a curve, a two storey building in the centre with an arm at either side, one of which will be a conventional restaurant and the other a fish restaurant, the centre part probably the kitchens and admin. Further up the site is the main store building built on three floors. This building will house not only the store departments but also the warehouses and offices. The old warehouse on Regents Avenue will become the regional distribution centre. the the front of the main store there are two cabins, one at either side. These are 1, Thorntons Chocolates, and 2 Pendle Tourism. The main store will be accessed through revolving doors in the centre at the front giving entrance to the Ladies, Menswear and Shoe departments, glass and china etc to be on the first floor. The warehouses are on the Vivary Way side and staff car parking on the other. Main car park at the front possibly over a thousand spaces. To the rear of the store a further building houses the service units, sprinkler pumps etc and possibly judging by the size of the exhaust that can be seen at present, a standby generator set. When does it all happen? Hand over app January 21st 2008, and the changeover on the weekend of 15/16 March 2008, We know that not everyone is in favour of this type of new development, but I see it as a bold and exciting effort that is being quite tastefully executed.

Can you believe I have not noticed any building work! I was on this roundabout only last week!
Mind you, I was watching some idiot who came off the end of the M65 and promptly mounted the grass on the roundabout... not your typical boy racer either I hasten to add!

Two other possible developments muted for Colne and both again on ex industrial sites. Tesco have expressed an interest in the Empress Mill site, and Sainsburies in the other site to the East which was recently Coach House Antiques. Both have usefull projections for easing the traffic flow on the valley. I like the way that the new Boundary Mill site is being fenced off with proper iron railings and not the savage galvanised type that are fairly typical of similar projects, and that double row of trees just inside should be very good when mature. The restaurant block has its own car park and I understand that the fish restaurant will be open till ten o clock in the evenings.
Mel, that certainly wasnt the first and will not be the last I am sure, overshooting the roundabout is a weekly event.

Nobody currently employed by the firm is to be made reduntant, in particular those at present employed as drivers of the fleet of vehicles used for transporting staff and goods between various buildings. All are to be offered positions within the new store. One thing that will be missing .but not missed, is the dreadful smell of the abbatoir behind the present site. The old Glass and China dept, belongs to Asda and it has been rumoured that Asda may take the rest of the old site for expansion.

Thanks for that info Thomo. I grew up on Bunkers Hill and can't imagine where it is located and what it looks like? Is there a chance that someone can take a few pics of the building site and post them on OGFB so we can catch a glimpse of what it looks like please?

I will see what I can do Shane. Meanwhile an update and breaking news. Update: Changeover 17/18th march. See this weeks local press for recruitment promotion, there are to be job opportunities accross the entire spectrum of operations with an open day at Colne Jobcentre, date to be anounced. The tourism cabin is to be "Discover Pendle" and is to be manned by recruited staff working under the Boundary Mill Banner. I will be after a job in there, my physical knowledge of Pendle area being quite extensive.

Thanks Thomo . . . no rush for the pics just whenever you might be passing.  Yes Gus I had a look on google earth but it just isn't the same as a proper view and I was thinking it would be also good to have some documented record for posterity in 100 years or so?

 Cheers Shane

I refused to shop at Boundary Mill or Asda because I couldn't stand the revolting smell - it almost made me throw up the first (and last) time I went there. So it's good to hear it will be gone soon.Go to Top of Page

Think of poor me who works there. Our lovely staff canteen overlooks the smelly abatoir and you can hear the pigs squealing on a regular basis.
It's not just the smell that puts me off, but the thought of those little piggies squealing. MMm maybe I shouldn't eat anymore bacon.
