We were woken at six this morning with loud knocking at the front door and the unmistakable figure through the glass of a Policeman, given that our children all live away from here there was immediate concern and fear, However the above picture is of the scene that greeted us, this is all just less than two weeks after a meeting to discuss the traffic problems that manifest Gisburn Rd and Bracewell Lane. As I have posted elsewhere we have just had a distressing weekend and last week I completed security so that our animals can go safely in the garden. At this moment I just dont know where to start.

I was down that way about 5am this morning Peter, I just cant imagine how the car could have ended in your front fence, either speed or bad driving or both, first thing to do is contact their insurance. Thank goodness no one was hurt... or were they ??

Hi Gus and Belle. No one was hurt but the repercusions could we hope go far. The local councilors have all got copies of the photos as have Lancs County Council traffic management. Estimated speed of impact in excess of 50 mph and just now whilst watering the garden we had two at probably 80 mph. This was the third piece of damage to this property caused by mis-use of this road. It is a B class road being used by A road traffic at speeds far in excess of 30 mph. I am a true Barlicker, born and bred, and this used to be a much sought after part of the town but in the past seven days we have had this plus drunken or drugged up football fans at midnight riskiing their lives by lying in the road or jumping out in front traffic and dropping their pants, IC4 kids with vuvezalas using the bus terminus as a football stadium, and of course the regular traffic of youngsters at weekends visiting the dealers. Our hedge is damaged beyond repair, the garden will never be the same. When asked today what I would like instead of the hedge Isuggested a Bofors 44/45 and a thousand rounds of HE ammo, or I could ask my nieghbour who works in Africa clearing land mines to bring  a few back to lay in the road!!!!!!!

How about a moat Thomo? Preferably very deep and wide and also acting as a home for hungry alligators.

Thomo....Sorry to see such a mess, it must have been quite a shock.....

I'm not normally an advocate of speed cameras , but the circumstances you describe sound like your road is crying out for one. It is very difficult to judge the speed of a vehicle as a pedestrian , but sometimes you just KNOW that the limit is being exceeded by a lot........Enforcement  and chicanes (not speed bumps) should be the response......

Good Luck Sir !

I can see you have a well cared for garden, so I feel your sorrow.
Did they catch the culprit?

Did you not hear anything when it happened?

Until proper deterrents are introduced, such happenings as this, and worse, will continue.

I  wondered for quite a while why this state  of affairs existed, until I realised that there are things that are beneficial to our "rulers" for the present state of affairs to continue as it is.

1) There is a nice little earner going on for the state every time someone is fined.

2) The fines are usually affordable and so are not a long term deterent.

3)  The "punishment" is not too severe and would not seriously affect any of our ruling classes if they got caught (as many of them have been)

4)  If the punishments were a jail sentence then it would be a drain on the publics pocket under the current way prisoners are cosseted.

5)  If the correct punishment,  i.e.. a driving ban for life,  were introduced it would bring this sort of thing down immediately. But for a short time it would remove a good number of the ruling classes from circulation and that would be intolerable.

Thank you all. There is no legal action taking place but fortunately the driver was insured. It could now be in the BET later.

Until such time as speeding becomes as socially unacceptable as drink-driving (and I do think that finally, this is a form of social death), then I fear we'll still have people flying around at excessive speed.  In towns and cities, it should be 20 mph max, less please.  I've said it before on here, but if you want to get into a moral lather over children meeting violent ends at the hands of strangers, you should focus your lather at drivers who fly around town in cars; they kill plenty of kids a year.

Sadly, we all have to witness the blatherings of the likes of Clarkson and May, who make up for their shortcomings in the penis department as a certain type of chap through the ages long has - misplaced bravado and faith in their abilities.  Boys with toys if you like and they've got a lot to answer for - those two, the speed camera vandals, the Association of British Drivers, or whatever the latest outlet is for fut-gutted, farmers'-arsed, 'libertarian' nutjobs.

Yup, it gets me annoyed this.....

We should have zero tolerance on breaking speed limits (after all, it is breaking the law as well as dangerous) and heavy penalties, then decide if we need to change the limits to suit modern motoring. As long as we turn a blind eye and the majority of people are speeding we are sending out a signal to all and sundry that it's OK to break the law and OK to act dangerously. In the case of speeding, breaking the law has become the norm rather than the deviation from it.

I think the speeding laws are very foolish and are, in some way, to blame for their own flouting.

It is obvious that 30 mph is not a "safe " speed, nor is 20mph nor even 10mph. Even carelessly remaining stationary is very dangerous. It depends on what else is on the road and what the road conditins are as to what a safe speed is.

It is also obvious that there are many times when it is quite safe to exceed the prescribed limit safely. The person who prescribed the the limit for the area could not possibly know the road conditions for every moment of time to come when the limit was set.

Furthermore,  should I be doing 20 mph in a 30mph zone and I hit a person or car I am not exonerated because I was well under the speed limit. I am guilty of  "driving without due care and attention" or "dangerous driving".

The driver on the spot is a much better judge of road conditions and should be allowed to exercise his judgement. ...Subject to being disqualified for life if he gets it wrong.

This silly situation seems to be due to the squirachy bringing in the speed limit, initialy to replace the man with the red flag who was there to prevent "persons in horseless carriages frightening the horses", and it has stuck...with modification, and is now being used wrongly for the reasons mentioned in my previous rant.

Not yet Bradders but I did see a speeding motorist pulled by an unmarked car just up the road yesterday at 5.30 PM.

Catty, too many drivers don't have any judgement to exercise!

Then they would not be drivers for long if my idea were introduced.

What is more the drivers that were left on the road would have a very much more cautious approach if they wanted to continue driving.  Wink
