Hi I joined the site as I was Googling my dad's old piano teacher, to find out more about him (Lloyd Hartley) and stumbled on this site. My great great grandad, William Boothman, was a farmer born in Barnoldswick and I do a bit of genealogy, so thought I'd join.
Looking forward to finding out more about the area part of my family comes from (we now live near York, but was born in Leeds). My dad, born in the 1920s in Leeds, was often teased about the Lancashire twinge to his accent which he said came from the Boothmans. Might even find some relatives here, you never know! Looking forward to chatting with you folk.

Ow do Tyke. As Barlick was Yorkshire until admin boundary changes you'll find plenty of Tykes on here. Nolic

Hi there Tyke. Boothmans Farm is about 100 yards from here, John Boothman runs it now His Dad was Fred Boothman. Welcome aboard.

I have an idea I used to pick milk up from Anthony Boothman's in Bracewell at New House Farm. 1950/1960. He always got the by-name 'Tant' Boothman.

Thanks for the welcome! My grt grt grandad, William Boothman, left your neck of the woods and farmed at Roundhay, in Leeds. I'm descended from his son, Tom, who had a dairy in Leeds. On the censuses, William always gives his birthplace as Barnoldswick, Yorkshire so I'd guessed it had shifted over the boundaries, at some point.

1974 so Ted Heath could win the election. Lancashire for administration purposes only. Old boundaries ie. the Ridings still in place by statute. I live in Barlick and I know I'm in Yorkshire, the Norsemen and Danelaw says so!

I grew up in Gledhow, Tyke, and went to Roundhay High School. Whereabouts was your Gt gt grandfather's farm?

Wendy, it was called Homestead Farm. My dad grew up not far away, was born at Bradley Terrace, Shadwell just off what was then Roman Ave. After William Boothman died, his widow and some of his other sons continued to run it. That's where they got the milk for Boothman's Dairy. My dad used to fetch the churns on a cart attached to a push-bike, when he was a young lad.

I forgot to say, but since I first posted here, found the wedding notice of my grt X 3 grandparents, in the Leeds Mercury, June 1821, which gives us a more precise address for the Boothmans at this date:
"MARRIED... On the 10th... Mr William Boothman , Calf-Hall, near Barnoldswick, to Miss Ann Waterhouse, only daughter of the late Mr Waterhouse, of Sherpherd's-House, near Arthington."
Not sure if "Calf-Hall" refers to a specific building, in 1821, or an outlying hamlet kind of thing? He was a farmer and she was a stone mason's daughter.

NIce to hear about some fellow Boothmans. My mother was a Boothman. Stanley mentioned Tant Boothman at New House Farm in Bracewell and he was my grandfather. He retired in '59 and lived just past the Fanny Grey until he died in about '67.
He was descended form David Boothman in the Linton/Grassington area, but before that his Boothmans came from Barnoldswick. I'll try to dig out some more details for you.

Small world isn't it. My dad's brother Frank Dinsdale farmed at Calf Hall Farm in the 1930's/40's. As a young boy often spent school holidays there after my mother died in 1945.
