" to tell me I did not get the job I was interviewed for on Friday "

Did they give you feedback as to why you didn't get the job ?? not prying just curious as to why potential employers Interview and then turn down, there must be a reason why because one would assume that you met the criteria or they wouldn't have interviewed you. They should tell you why, like someone else was better qualified etc.
That leads to OK then why interview when they must have known what qualifications they wanted to be able to write the job advert first time around.

The editing was.  I removed a comment about Time Wasters  people who interview more applicants for a vacant position than is required.

I here we have another interpretation of the US mandate in Libya. Military advisers are evidently now allowed. Shades of Vietnam. Mission Creep is alive and well.
For US read UN
Mission Creep
is a recognised Military Tactic, slowly slowly catch the monkey.
Libya is on our doorstep Vietnam wasn't !!  plus the fact the Chinese are not involved, different thing altogether. Libya will disintergrate into tribal areas it is not and never has been a country in what we would recognise as the term. It has half a dozen main towns linked by highways with nothing between the towns only rocks and desert. Gaddafi was the best and still is the best option, once it splits it is difficult to keep tabs on what is going on.

"Mission Creep" Modern jingoistic media generated word, could also be used to describe some journalists.

Then getting rid of the Colonel might be a good thing after all. Did not "Old Mother Shipton" suggest that some day the little yellow men would control the world. Up here in the good old North they already have a widespread criminal influence, in particular, in the Yorkshire Dales.

Yes Frank, I was shortlisted and interviewed but lost out to someone with better qualifications.  It was my first interview from applications made over the last 6 months. It was also the second interview of my entire working life. I was relieved to hear that my interview was considered to be relaxed but professional and my replies to questions reasoned and to the point, can't really do any better than that. It's water under the bridge now and no point dwelling on it too much, rejection letter is filed with the rest of my job hunting stuff and I will continue looking.

Many jobs on the various websites that I look at will have sometimes 20, 30, 40, or I have seen over 100 applicants. Depending on the number of applicants some employers will only reply to shortlisted candidates.

A lot of employers also use recruitment agencies to filter applicants, you get no direct contact with the employer as you simply have to fit into all the various perceived boxes that the job requires to get anwhere near a shortlisting stage. This process does not take into consideration experience or personality or suitability for any given role. Many jobs now seem to be contracted out to agencies where the agency are the actual employer. I find this aspect of the current job market very strange.

If I apply for a job and do not hear anything after the closing date I always make a point of ringing the employer or agency to ask if the vacancy has been filled or not. I don't apply for positions that I know I am not qualified for or capable of doing.

Good to hear you had positive feedback.
Tripps I meant not on the border, supplying arms etc.
When I worked in China I visited Vietnam through the border crossing at Nanning awful place.

About thirty years ago Dulux made some gloss paint 'including Silthane'. It was good stuff, I opened my tin of Buckingham Green and found it had no skin on top and after a good stir was as good as the day it was made. That tin was a good buy! So I took the back gate off. painted it, polished the brass numbers and had it dry and hung again by 16:00. Never gave a thought to little yellow men in the Dales or Libya....  Wonderful. (PS. DIY tip. Always turn the gate upside down and start by painting the hard to get at bits.)

I see the BP action against Transocean has started. The lawyers will all be buying their wives new hats.  Ten years work minimum? Just heard that Transocean is being sued for £28billion and an unspecified claim against a firm called Cameron International who supplied the blow-out preventer. My mind boggles....

Talking about gloss paint, has anyone got suggestions for a low-volatiles white gloss replacement to use on the doors, window sills, skirting boards etc in our house? I've always found the odour from gloss paint unpleasant and I now have a lung problem which means I want to avoid anything that irritates the lung lining. We once tried a water-based alternative but it gave a terrible finish that was flaky and easily scratched. Also, I don't want to have to remove all the old gloss paint, just rub it down and apply new paint! I've looked on the Web but people usually seem to say the replacements are poor.

Mentioning lungs reminds me...did you hear the news this morning about how we miss 70% of latent tuberculosis (TB) infections among immigrants into the UK? People get `latent' TB which will later develop into full-blown TB and the latent type doesn't show up on chest X-rays, so immigrants with latent TB don't get detected when they come into the country. Scientists at Imperial College London want blood checks used instead because these would detect almost all cases. Missing 70% is worrying and the scientist on the radio was asked if this meant we faced a big problem with increased TB in cominmg years. Answer? Yes. TB has laready become twice as common among immigrants in the UK over the last 10 years. More info here.

If our experience is anything to go by, you'll have a job these days finding any paint that ISN'T water-based or low odour.

We've done our whole house with paint from B&Q and coverage is good but I can't vouch for the durability yet as it's all less than 6 months old.

On balance, I would prefer to use paint with low odour and free from nasty additives even if it means reapplying sooner than old style stuff.

Paint can be renewed easily. Lungs are a little more difficult...

Thanks Heather. I haven't bought any gloss paint for a few years so I didn't know it had changed that much. One day in the future people will look back and say "Do you know, in the 21st Century they still used paint with those solvents and other nasty chemicals in them, no wonder they suffered all sorts of illnesses. Just like in the 19th Century when they still put lead in white flour and cosmetics to whiten them and strychnine in beer to make it bitter. Makes you wonder why people didn't complain about it.".
