Tesco are considering opening a store in Barnoldswick.

They claim it will create 175 jobs and keep shoppers in the town, as well as saving local firm L&P Springs.

There are 2 exhibitions taking place this Friday and Saturday for people to gain more information.

Views, anyone?

Probably not quite 200, there were around 100 of the red chairs (we only have 120 of them) in the room, we brought about a dozen extra grey ones in and there were around 15 or 20 standing at the back.  Can't comment on what was said, I was at the trustees meeting on the comfy settees in another room.  We heard several bouts of applause so it sounded positive.

Afetr much careful consideration I think a Tesco store, in Barlick, is a good idea. Where do the majority do their shopping? Colne, Skipton and Burnley I reckon. I personally go to Sainsburys, in Colne. I would use Tesco if it was in Barlick. I would imagine it would be used by those in Thornton, Bracewell, Salterforth, Kelbrook, etc...

But that's just my opinion.

I believe the existing shops would benefit from the increase in shoppers to Barlick, as long as it was made known to them, in the Tesco car park, where the Town Centre is and that we benefit from free parking.

Highly controversial and as it was billed as an anti - Tesco meeting, its hardly surprising most were againt.  Most people at Tesco's presentation were in favour.  I'd use a local Tesco. We used to get almost all of our shopping from them on-line, but with change of circumstances (most customers pay me in cash) we do most of it at the Co-op now.  I think they'd be the ones who felt it most.  They ARE more expensive but on the positive side they have lots of offers and their own brand food is generally better than Tesco's.

I like frozen breaded fish I cook in the oven for a quick tea, A box of 4 is £2.50 at Tesco, and £2.99 at Co-op, but the Co-op is a better product (IMO at least).

I tend to agree with both of you even though I hate the attempt to expand Tesco. The massive market share they have isn't healthy but they seem to have a hold on the planning system. If it is inevitable put the effort into supporting the town shops. I do what I can in my articles......

"Probably not quite 200..."

I was just going off what I overheard somebody saying, that they'd got about 200 filled-in sheets.

Just wondering out loud, so to speak. No hard facts, just my gut reaction here. No need for anyone to pile in on an anti-Callunna mission, which seems to be the case whenever I express an opinion on OG. Not that I'm paranoid or anything...

Would a supermarket development bring more people into Barlick town centre? When I go to a supermarket in, say, Colne, I don't think to myself "Right, I'll leave all my stuff including frozen food in my car and go and have a wander up the high street..." No, I drive back home straight away.

Would I be so mithered if it were Morrison's rather than Tesco? Probably not. Morrison's really does use local produce whereas, as I understand it, Tesco uses whatever is cheapest and makes most profit for them. It might be local, it might not. When I have a brew, I want to be certain there's 100% British milk in it, not a mix from all over the world. Perhaps my perception is wrong. If so, I'll happily alter my opinion.

The planning issue from a few years back regarding a supermarket at Butts hasn't necessarily gone away. If Tesco gets permission, then chances are there'll be another one in the pipeline.

Having said that, the fact is that despite Tesco's presentation and leafletting, I believe they haven't actually applied for planning permission yet.  The site is designated for industrial use and would have to be changed to retail use - a big step.

Why would people from Colne or Skipton come to Barlick to shop when they have plenty of supermarkets themselves?

Why did the Nelson Tesco shut down?

(These aren't rhetorical questions - I genuinely wonder why)

I came back to live in Barlick because it's unique. This is partly due to its mix of shops and its people. If you want to live near a supermarket, why not go and live in, say, Colne - a mere 4 miles away? I know that sounds inflammatory - it's 6:40am and I haven't slept a wink all night which is why I'm whileing away the time on Tinterweb - apologies if I've offended anyone. I really don't mean to.  But that's a question many people are asking. If you've chosen to live in Barlick, it's probably because of its unique make up - change the balance and you risk losing what you liked in the first place.

I know you can't halt progress. I know it's the 21st century. I know people like cheap food and convenience - I certainly do, which is why I'm not hundred percent against a supermarket. I just need some answers to nagging questions.

Someone at the meeting quoted research that had found that a basket of goods cost £2 more after Tesco announced a Price Drop. Sure, the loss leaders cost less but they'd snuck up the prices on other goods to compensate.

The Co-op might be dearer at the till, but use your membership card and you get a nice surprise every now and again with the vouchers. At least the profits come back to us the ordinary people - not overseas shareholders.

I think I'd better go now - it's nearly dawn and I should try to get some kip...Go to Top of Page

Not another all-nighter!?

Tesco announced this morning the first fall in annual profit for twenty years. They blame lack of cash due to the cuts. Sainsbry's report increased profit so work that one out. Is the Tesco juggernaught starting to falter?

The key to understanding supermarket profit margins is to look at their net profit as a percentage of cost of goods bought. Not easy figures to get at but they are higher in the UK than similar operations in US, Australia etc. That's why Walmart bought Asda, far bigger net profit here than in the US. When I was Open All Hours 50 years ago the Inland Revenue expected me to have a gross profit of 15% and a net of at least 3%. Any less than that and they were all over you looking for leakage. I think US average for supermarkets is about the same but over here it's higher. As Hether says, the Co-op aren't cheap but you do get the divi of 1% on spending which makes them come into line if you shop sensibly, keep away from the highly processed foods and watch for the orange labels. However they can't compete on some basic items with shops like Chaudrie's, eggs and fruit and veg much cheaper there. Meat is another area where they can't compete with the independent butchers for quality and overall price. Another plus for the Co-op is that they changed their policy in Barlick a few years ago and stopped selling some non-food items which competed with local shops.

This argument about the pros and cons, of a Tesco`s in Barlick is all very reminiscent of the Barmy Mick days. This was the time in the early to mid sixties, when the former market stall holder wanted, and succeeded in opening the former Palace theatre as a supermarket. Although nothing remotely the size of Tescos, I would say the anti supermarket voice was much more vociferous then than to-day, especially amongst the local traders, who in the main waged all out war against his application. They had the local top Barlick solicitor Fred Steele, fighting their corner, television crews descended on the town, as they say "there was a right to do" The point I am trying to make is that since the coming and going of Barmy Mick, who I worked for by the way. The town has seen many changes in trade over the intervening years, two supermarkets, many takeaways,a whole range of diverse niche shops, a wonderful town square, which has become a marvelous social gathering place. I firmly believe Barlick will be able to hold its own with Tesco, yes it may be hard for some, but in the main, I believe that it will be Tesco who will have to pull out all the stops to make their venture a success, and yes, I will certainly use Tesco, just as I do at the moment, and there is no way will I ignore the town centre and the shops. Lets not be afraid of Tesco, but face up to the challenges it poses.. after all forty odd years down the line, who remembers Barmy Mick ???

Mmm - I take your point Gus, but comparing Barmy Mick's to Tesco is like comparing a 1960s Ford Pop to a modern Formula 1 ... Smile

And BK, yes of course I could shop in Colne high street first ... but I don't, and I'll wager not many others would either. Maybe as a one-off out of curiosity, but not so that it could be claimed Asda had brought new and regular shoppers into the area.

Mind you, I don't suppose what I - or any of us - thinks will make one jot of difference to the eventual outcome. Tesco is so powerful that it will get what it wants and is prepared to play the long game. Those of us beyond middle age will be too old (or deceased!) to see the ultimate results anyway Wink

I just wish it had been Morrison's...

Again, no offence intended to anyone. Make allowances for my total lack of sleep... Thumbs-down

(Notice how I've peppered this with smilies so folk will hopefully take it as light hearted - like 95% of anything I write on OG. If anyone wants to threaten me with libel/slander/violence, as has happened in the past, then please let me know and I'll leave the country...)Go to Top of Page

I will second that Big Kev, its a pleasure to go in their store at Colne, light airy and spacious, and with plenty of variety.

Agreed. For the extra 5 minutes car journey time I would still rather go there. Or to one of the many other decent supermarkets in the local vicinity.Go to Top of Page

Colne is virtually ring fenced with Major supermarkets, and other major chain stores etc. and quite frankly Colne town centre is always buzzing. I like going to Colne, the main street is full off shops of various types. The pubs all seem to keep going, and selling their wares far cheaper than those who have closed their doors in Barlick, theres a lesson there somewhere.

Should Barnoldswick play to its strengths? It is a manufacturing town , serving the UK and the world, not a retail centre where the next chinese made import has to appear in vast quantities. I dont think that the residential numbers around Barnoldswick could support a larger than Co-Op Tescos ( though I prefer Tesco's food and shop in Skipton - mostly because its open long hours).  Barnoldswick does need a little support though from Government ( local or national ) to attract an additional sizeable employer into the area, unless people from Skipton , Nelson and beyond can be attracted into the Town for their shopping and leisure activities , and I get the feeling in current economic times this will could be difficult as people are going to sit on their cash rather than spend.

Gus, I think you may be right and of course there is also the fact that it is not in the town centre. If Tesco really wanted to get local trade they're in the wrong place, I think they are being a bit more strategic than that, filling the gap in their coverage between Colne and Skipton. Then of course there is the fact that the local traders will have to raise their game and that could be a good thing.
