A short time afterwards Mother became pregnant with her third child, My Grandpa decided that he would sell the town house in Putney,to buy a flat in Seaford Sussex. his favorite holiday town for a great many years the whole family had gone there each summer,it bored Mum to tears but grandad loved it , and swam every day before breakfast, come hail or shine winter or summer. So he divided the left over money between his two daughters , enough money for them to each buy a house. Mum desighned ,and drew a bungalo , and purchased a plot . While the Bungalo was being planned , and constructed we moved into town. Mandaville road a very nice cull de sac, all the houses were different, and all were very nice some small some large family housing from the 30s o 40s. We had a garden front and back, but to just play in the garden would be like a small prison to us country folk(me and Peter), and we were further reduced by having to share a bedroom. one day Keith gave me a red setter pup, and Peter a black labrador. Peter liked the animals but wasnt potty over them, after all you couldnt make any money out of them. I was absolutly made up over the present,I called him prince , he was the most beutifull dog , he had long silk hair wavy and such a lovely color, you couldnt help touching him all the time. We interchanged tons of love, he filled an affective hole that i didnt even know existed untill he arrived,Peters dog was sent back after a short time to where he came from uncle Jacks.
Mum supervised personally the building of the bungalo, she made the builders life hell questioning everything they did , and even making them do something her way if she didnt like the way they did it , all this without any knowledge of the work, all because she had caught them filling in a hole with a screwed up cement sack to be cemented on top of, instead of putting a couple of bricks in. It may have been the best built house in the town, but with the worst bad tempered feeling . It would take some time to complete ,and to dry enough to live in. Meanwhile Mothers belly was growing, and the final divorce papers were not finished, in those days it took ages to get a divorce through. there was still some huming ,and haring going on over us kids. We had avisit from a some official person who asked us a lot of questions , like where is the best place you have lived , we of course said Painters lodge because we can play out nude if we wanted to , and there was a wood, -and who do you want to live with , Mum or Dad , we both said Dad , because she hits us. she being mum. and does she leave you on your own- yes sometimes i come home from school, and she,s out ,and the doors locked, and if it rains i have to sit in the outside loo waiting, but last time she left some bread ,and butter pudding on the step so i was,nt so hungry, the other time before the old lady next door took me in , and gave me tea. But the campaighn was to no avail , we were awarded to mum by the skin of her teeth. The papers at last came , i was to be a brides maid at the wedding , and had a pretty new dress. Mum looked very nice although the pregnancy was one week overdue. But i went down with german measles, and had to stay at home , alone.

They used to have German Measles parties for girls in the bad old days Doreen. The theory was that once you got it you were immune and it wouldn't affect any pregnancy.

Mum was about thirty two i was six going on seven, Keith taking the Photo would be about twenty three. You may be surprised ,but we didn,t have a cat , but as you can see i was adopted by an resident cat , of the neighbors, it must have liked me very much , as it apears in al four photos ,two of its own choice. The reason the camera was brought out that day was because there was this new black car, and Daisy had fallen by the wayside. we had our first television in this house, but i cant remember having looked at it much, or wanting to. The house had a name plate over the door that said Sundown, this name was later transferred to the new Bungalow. I was to sit on mums lap to hide the bulge. The sandals were clarkes specialy wide fitting, and remember when we went to buy them, they mesured my foot and they put the apropiate shoe on me , and then my feet were put into the X RAY machine , and i saw my bones inside the shoe, and the seller saw that my toes were not to long for that size, these machines i think were bannedafterwards as a danger to health , up till then we had worn welly boots in winter , and plastic beach sandals in summer. we were not the only ones, at school there were quite a few . The girls socks in those days never ever stayed up, and the ancle socks were always twice the size of your ancle so that the shoe ate the sock at regular intervals. . The strange turret like building that you half see behind the house was the water tower.

Well Doreen, you have taken my day up! i had to wait for a phone call at dinner time and began to read this topic...though I've had to be out this afternoon, it is now 5 oclock, and finally I am up to date, as I have read up to this page. I have enjoyed every word of it, you are a natural story teller, and being in my fifities much of it is reminiscent of my own schooldays etc. Can't wait for the next episode!

The Eleanor Arms in Bow, North London, was named after my great-great grandmother.
As for me, I wasn't born in a pub, but I think I was probably conceived in one! ;)

Dot, the general criterion is to remember that kids come on the site. The question you have to ask yourself is 'am I exposing them to things they know nothing about'. Nowadays they probably know more than we do...... Think of the language even the best of them are exposed to from their peers and on the media..... I think you've got quite a lot of scope....

CRISPS N POP At weekends Mum , and Keith would go out for a drink. We went with them, but stayed out in the car, Keith usually came out twice with crisps, the ones with a little twist of salt in them for you to sprincle in the bag , and then shake it to spread the salt evenly, washed down with a bottle of Vimto or suchlike. This was in the days before the move, so they parked Daisy on the pubs parking lot, three cars maximum. we were not allowed to get outside the car, so we had to play games inside to ocupy ourselves in the dark. One of the games i think was made up by my brother, it was called the sausage game, and it consisted in my brother asking me questions, and the only answer allowed was sausage. For example:
Whats your name ?=sausage,
What do you eat ?=sausages,
What sort of a dog have you got ?= sausage dog,
Whats your nose like? a sausage,
What is the moon made of ? = sausages,
what do you wash your face with ? = sausage,
and so on . The rules were that you lost a piont if you laughed. all other rules were made up by peter as he went along ,and as it siuted him. it was a jolly pastime , and as i used to laugh a lot never won the game.

THE BABY
After the wedding Auntie violet came to stay, she took over our bedroom ,and a double bed was put in the front livingroomfor us to sleep in. the baby was very overdue, but one day after school we came home to the news that we had a new baby brother, but we wer,nt allowed to see mum or the baby, mum had had some sort a mental turn because the baby was a runt , and she didnt give birth to runts, so auntie violet was keeping them separate from the world untill a bonding was formed, just like you would with an animal. Mumbefore he was born had drawn pictures of ablonde curly haired large and bouncing baby, and what was born was not up to her standard, She always said that if he had been born in a hospital she would never had beleived that he was hers. But in the end Mother accepted the baby , as it was born at home nobody could have swapped it for another. This process went on for a few days ,and i was getting upset not being able to see mum or the baby. So on the third night, when we were in bed , antie Violet Gave me the baby wrapped in a shawl to me to look after, he was layed between us in the bed, i was given a tiny dinky feeding bottle with water in , and told to give it to him if he cried. I thaught he was a beutifull baby, and loved him at first sight. He slept all night holding my finger. peter was,nt all that interested after a few minutes, but i felt honored to be trusted with him. Of course Auntie Violet always knew what to do do in these situacions, i of course would become his second mother, he was named David Owen legge.
