I've been thinking of starting this topic for a while.  Let's see how it goes....

Asked if he was in charge of the nation, in the absence of the Prime Minister -
Mr Clegg told Metro: ‘Yeah, I suppose I am. I forgot about that.

That reminds me of Morecambe and Wise. Ernie; "Have you got the scrolls?" Eric; "No, I always walk like this".

Nice. My old accountant Mr Petty, was a Yorkshire fan. He once told me about Harold Larwood having a batsman dropped off two successive balls in the slips by the same fielder. He walked down the pitch and had a quiet word. "Look lad, if thart not laiking at catching, I'm not laiking at bowling."

Kitty Usher:

Time to Drop the 50% Tax Rate

The Labour Party could steal a march on the Tories by calling for an end to the soak-the-rich tax.

I'm sure that many in the Labour Party would feel that any comment about finances coming from that direction would feel that she was papering over the cracks - as she did when she misappropriated parliamentary expences to do just that!! Nolic

God knows why but this has been in my head the last few days.'A flea and a fly in a flue. Said the fly let us flee, said the flea let us fly. So they flew through a flaw in the flue'.

If nothing else it demonstrates the complications of the English language!

As for Kitty Usher, who cares what she says? The 50% tax rate probably is inefficient, time to abolish it is when a proper Wealth Tax is put in its place.

Well done him.

Maybe he can spend some of that payout for losing his seat.

At least he isn't using a communication allowance anymore

I think Kitty is only echoing the statements made by Alistair Darling when he imposed the 50p rate and is roughly in line with James Purnell and Tony Blair.

The party is made up of a broad coalition of views, expressed democratically

The fact that it smacks of simple politicing without actually addressing the circumstances should come as no surprise.

As to the wealth tax, I thought that Brown had already introduced that, the £35,000 charge on people wishing to seek elderly social care imposed at the death of a property owning individual.

Thanks for that David. I wish them well. Did you see the report that the Pmdle seat might be one of the casualties of the boundary reforms?

whatchutalkingaboutWhy do they have to keep messing around with boundaries? I can't find my way around a map of the UK any more. To me Earby was North Yorkshire, Pendle was a hill, and Burnley, Colne and Nelson was a Joint Transport Committee. I seem to remember that the border was between Foulridge and Kelbrook? Was Barlick not also North Yorkshire?

cheers,

cloggy

You are mistaken in both cases Cloggy, the border was (is) indeed between Kelbrook and Foulridge at the County Brook. Barlick and Earby were always (and still are) in the West Riding of Yorkshire.

Ted Heath altered the constituency boundaries in the 1974 so he could win the election. The historical boundaries are still officially intact but for administrative purposes we find ourselves in the red rose county now.

The ridings (three) were established under Danelaw by the Vikings (or I think we should say Norsemen). North, East and West. After reorganisation for the reasons mentioned above. Yorkshire was divided into North, South, West and Humberside for administration and electoral purposes.

I think you may get more than one comment on this!
